Summary
Cal coughs, then once he’s caught his breath again, asks, “How did you know this was here?”
Cere keeps her eyes on her work. BD-1 whirrs at her shoulder, gesturing to a likely coupling to fix the breaker. Her hands are shaking, fingers stiff and stinging where the salt water bleeds into small cuts and cracks. Once she’s sure her voice will be steady, she responds, “This is how I escaped. The first time. Five years ago.”
- - -Cal and Cere escape the Fortress with the Holocron, but they do not make it to the surface of the water. Instead, injured, ill, and trailed by the dead, they must find their own way to safety, following a trail Cere laid five years before: a dark, crumbling, abandoned utility tunnel resting at the very bottom of the seafloor.
Underwater, Cere faces a choice.

Summary
“We might have another option,” he says. “I maybe know a place where we could find plenty of replacements for the nav and comm systems, the right age even. Guaranteed.”
“Where?”
“Oh, just a massive scrapyard full of old Republic-era ships, that I happen to know my way around.”
Cere looks at him with a flat, humorless expression on her face. “You want to go back to Bracca.”
Cal nods. “I want to go back to Bracca. Ok, well, want is a strong word…”

They’ve traversed the meandering pathways under Nur’s dark oceans and evaded the Inquisition yet again, but they’re far from out of danger, and a long way from reconnecting with the Mantis. All they’ve got is a stolen ship with a broken navigational computer and there’s only one place in the galaxy they might find a replacement.
There’s just one other problem: Cal is dying. He’s been dying from the start.
Cal just really, really doesn't want to die on Bracca.

Summary
The ship has seen better days and those days were a long, long time ago. The beat-up craft lowers into its designated spot on the other side of the now-quiet party ship as Greez and Merrin head down the Mantis’s gangway to greet them. Merrin is first across the landing platform, with Greez trailing a bit behind her. She reaches the pair of them and throws her arms around Cal’s neck just as Cere cries out, “Careful—” Cal staggers back with the force of Merrin’s embrace and Cere has to brace his back to keep him on his feet. Merrin pulls back, then embraces Cere with the same enthusiasm. She seems to remember herself after a moment, pulling back and awkwardly refusing to meet their eyes.
Greez watches all this as he catches up, mouth agape. “You look awful,” is the first thing he can think to say.
“Thanks, Greez,” Cal says, with a tired smile. “We missed you too.”
Post-script to the dark ocean duology: Cal and Cere finally, finally return to the Mantis, where Merrin is just happy to see them and Greez has concerns.

Summary
“It looked smaller on the map,” Greez had said the day before when they first passed over the lake. And it had. Cal had looked at the charts, same as the others. This region was just supposed to have a few dotted ponds. Their maps are clearly out of date. At some point since the last update, the valley had flooded, obliterating the smaller ponds and turning them into a single, vast lake. So vast it’s almost a sea, the opposite bank so far than the planet’s curvature hides the sight of the shore.
After nearly drowning on Nur, Cal’s not so sure how he feels about wide expanses of water. Nightmares are conjured when the Mantis has no choice but to land at the side of a great lake.
[ Could be seen as a vague post-script to the dark ocean duology, which is why I added it to that series, but it's technically canon compliant and you don't need to read that series for this to make sense <3 ]
