He and his friends were talking about the football match during lunch, as his team obviously won but Liam just wasn’t getting that. Kyle was interrupted mid-sentence.
“Garrick, see me after class.”
The anxiety slammed back in him, a stubborn weight on his chest that just wouldn’t go away, no matter how much he willed it away. Why was he like this all of a sudden? He was fine a lesson before, what’s different?
His friends all went ‘oooooh’ at the same time. He was so used to their antics that he ignored it, and nodded, yet again swallowing through the dryness in his throat.

Footsteps walked down the hallway and Jess ran to meet their mother, clutching her legs crazily, crying into her thigh. It was loud, dramatic, and so obviously fake. Kyle stood up as their mother crouched down, pulling the youngest into a hug, shushing her cries and pressing kisses to her head, all whilst glaring at him. Kyle couldn’t push down the bitterness that sprung up inside of him, remembering the times he could use that hug or those kisses, remembering the times when he was told that he didn’t deserve or need it.
