Summary
She thinks of the shard of Morgoth’s crown stained with Fingon’s blood, and how powerful it is, a sacrifice freely given. A sacrifice made out of love. The same echoes in between the lines of the letter that is still hidden in her drawer, Maedhros Fëanorion reminding her of something she, in her naivety, had not assumed he could ever feel.
She loves her husband. And she can see the path he is descending down, falling out before them both into pain and heartbreak.
She picks up the quill, and continues to write.

Summary
He is on his knees in the mud. The very breath is stolen from his lungs. All he can see is darkness.
He sees his father’s face, creased in disappointment as he makes a mistake and the knife he is forging cracks when he quenches it. His mother, pale and drawn and staring out of the window of their house. The night that they ran, all his possessions that he could carry stuffed into a pack as they steal out of the house, tear tracks down his mother’s face as she urges him to run, to run as fast as he can through the twisted trees.
The same tears on her cheeks when her head is in his lap, blood staining her chest as his father is wrestled to the ground by guards in shining armour.
His father’s wide eyes as he falls. As if he didn’t really expect, until the moment he was pushed, that this was really the end.
The wind howls in the abyss below his feet. The rocks crumble and fall, and the edge of the precipice beckons.

Summary
I remember standing on the banks of that river, Fingon already dead on the plains before me, Turgon long gone and my brother fallen at my feet. My axe was falling apart in my hands, and I knew I would soon fall. And yet I called out. I don't know why, or who to, but I called out. Aurë entuluva ! I suppose that I was right. The day has come again.
The day may have come again, but the world is still vast, and shadows gather in the hollows of the valley.
Sometimes all you need is someone else to stand in them with you.

Summary
The wind picks up, and some of the smoke billowing out of the gates shifts and changes direction.
Túrin’s breath leaves him entirely.
Sunlight glints on silver hair.
It takes him a moment to place the sound, but then he remembers. Walking up and down the family room with the twins balanced in his arms. Not quite yelling at full volume, but crying still, both of them grizzing into either side of his neck as he walked and walked.
It’s been a long time, but Maedhros remembers the sound of an unhappy baby. "There's a child."

Summary
Fingon’s voice is cool when he answers. “And what will you decide is necessary?” he asks.
“For what?” Maedhros replies.
Fingon folds his arms across his chest. “To reach that end. Your father let the end justify the means more than enough times. Are you going to do the same?”
Maedhros stares at him. “It depends on the ends,” he says eventually. “It depends on the means.”
They're so close.

Summary
"Then have a think about my question." Maedhros returns his hand to his shoulder. "Why am I the general of our forces? Why do I make sure we can fight?"
Ereinion stares at the floor for a few moments. "Because…because if something were to go wrong, we would be ready," he says eventually. "So we can defend ourselves." He looks up at Maedhros. "Right?"
Maedhros skims his knuckles over his cheeks. "Correct. I learned to fight so I could defend the people I love. Sometimes that meant taking the fight to the enemy before they brought it to us, but it was always for Atto, and your uncles, and all these people around us." He tweaks Ereinion's nose again, delighting in his son's affronted squawk. "And now you. This is your first lesson."
Ereinion looks at him from between hands sheltering his nose from further harm. "What is?"
Maedhros holds out the small, blunted blade, balanced across one palm and one wrist. "Always, always, know why you're picking up a weapon to fight. If you don't know, then don't do it."
