Comment on Spam protection measures

  1. Is there any chance we can get a per-account setting to make allowing guest comments the default? I haven't had issues with spam and I like letting people comment anonymously because they're sometimes too shy or embarrassed to comment otherwise. I know it'll still be an option, but I already know I'm going to forget to change the setting on a work at some point unless there's an account-wide switch I can flip for it.

I appreciate the work you've done to stop the spam, and I'll live if there's no plan to offer such a setting, it would just be a nice little accessibility thing for the scatterbrained among us!

i would like to third this. a fair number of comments i get are from guests, and on the inevitable occasions that i forget to change this option, anyone shut out from leaving a comment...will have no way of letting me know they've been shut out. :3

but yes, thanks for being so responsive to the recent spam outbreak.

      Hi Aewin

      Thanks for your suggestion!

We've passed your feedback to our development team. If you'd like to make a formal request for this feature to be added to the Archive, contact Support as they handle feature requests in addition to providing technical support to AO3's users.

    4. I would like to fourth this. Even though I HAVE gotten some spam on occasion, I haven't been swamped with it like others have (thankfully). It hasn't been a serious issue on my end. With that said, I would also like the ability to keep my default settings as they are until such a case arises that I'm forced to switch them to something else. Hoping that never happens, though. A lot of my readers are guests/anonymous, so I hate the thought of forgetting to switch my default setting over when I'm uploading a new fic and they suddenly can't comment on my work.

    5. Throwing my support on this as well, for exactly the reasons stated. Plus I know people who read ao3 but don't have accounts because they don't want one! I want to leave my comments open for people like them and I'll absolutely forget to change my settings for each and every new fic. An account wide switch would be exactly what I'm looking for.

I also support this, I've always allowed guest comments, and I'll always allow guest comments. All this change does is add an annoying button to remember to switch when it should be an account toggle. I consider spam clean-up to be an inherent part of sharing online works, no matter how good the preventative measures of the site, elsewhere and on AO3. Spam really isn't that hard to recognise and remove.

    9. I'm already planning to make a user script to change this, for people who are willing to mess around with extensions (well, greasemonkey/tampermonkey specifically). I'm willing to risk spam for the chance of guest comments, at the moment!

      1. 😍 Could you let me know when you post it? Coders are wizards, thank you for your service.

        1. I just posted it now. No point in waiting, I guess. I'll check back to see if it still works when the site change goes through and really hope it does, but any updates will be at the same page (and the extension might handle them automatically, not sure).

          1. Thank you so much! I already use your English default language script and I love it.

I agree as I need all comments, whether they are useful content or spam. Actually, my works will never be popular enough to get spam :(
