The moment Liam sees it, he doesn’t quite know what happens. It’s like everything falls away around him, Mason and Corey’s light-hearted, hand-clasped bickering over the merits of pocket squares fading into background noise as Liam finds himself making a beeline for the wonderful thing that’s just appeared on a rack across the aisle.
It’s just – it’s so soft. And fluffy. It has the delicate pink tone of an early spring morning or the inside of a shell or the blush that sometimes Liam manages to rise to Theo’s cheeks, and it has a big, soft hood and white fur on the inside and it’s perfect.

‘Goodnight,’ Liam says hesitantly into the darkness, after a long sleepy pause that stretches out like warm toffee. He turns his head on the pillow, so he’s facing Theo in the dark.
He feels Theo nestle further into the bed, his hair flopping onto their shared pillow. Then, finally, softly, ‘Goodnight,’ Theo murmurs, and Liam feels him turn, too, facing Liam across the bed.

“He might’ve followed us then,” Liam says, eyes shifting to look over Theo’s shoulder as if checking for Bo.
Theo cocks an eyebrow. “Do you have some kind of issue with the guy?”
His ears perk up at the noticeable uptick in Liam’s heartbeat. “No,” he lies.
A high-school party + two guys who might just genuinely be incapable of open communication.

“Okay,” Liam said, looking up at him. Theo looked very serious. “You can tell me anything.”
Theo let out a shaky breath. “Don’t panic,” he started, so Liam got, naturally, got worried. “It was a while ago,” he added. “Before us,” he said, tangling their fingers together and giving Liam a reassuring squeeze.
Liam already doesn’t like where this is going. “When you were homeless,” he says.
Theo winces. “Yes,” he agrees.
“Okay,” Liam said. “Hit me.”
Theo licked his lips. “I tried to kill myself,” he whispered, closing his eyes.
And Liam’s entire world stops.

But when he backs up out of the corner spot in front of the Walmart and stomps on the gas—swerving to avoid the pesky edge of the curb and slamming with a sickening crunch into the rear of the pickup truck parked behind him—he thinks there’s a slim possibility he’s going to hell of mundane sins and offenses for what he’s about to do next.
