“Roy didn’t know a whole lot of things about the world, but he knew that people left. They came around for days, weeks, months, even years, and they brought glimpses of lives that could never have been Roy’s, and then they packed it all up and left.
It wasn’t a bad thing, necessarily; it just was.
Roy’s problem was that he was a fool. If Dick were there, he’d find a nicer way to word it – idealist, romantic, some bullshit like that – but really, Roy was foolish. He knew the rules, he knew how things were going to end, and he let himself hope every damn time.
Brave Bow used to say, “Hope’s the kind of thing that’ll get a Navajo kid in trouble.” Roy might not have been bound to the tribe by blood, but the tribal band on his arm sure as hell wasn’t for nothing.”
