Yuna was reading on the lounge in the front room when she heard the familiar crunch of gravel as David parked in the front driveway. He was back quicker than she’d expected. Shane had said he was on a ‘silent retreat’, which she assumed was code for ‘sick of his loving yet slightly overbearing parents’, but she’d at least hoped David would stay for a drink and try and convince him to join them for dinner. They’d barely seen him this off season and she was worried about him.
He’d seemed off his game in the fall and then his concussion had frightened her more than she’d like to admit. They’d been fortunate as a family that all Shane’s previous injuries had been relatively minor but seeing her baby crumpled and motionless on the ice had been terrifying. Maybe that was making her more overbearing than usual, but she was his mother and it was her job to worry.
It took a few minutes before she realised that David hadn’t come inside yet which was unusual for him. He was usually the first one out of the car. Getting up from her comfortable spot on the lounge, she peered out the front window. David was just sitting in the driver’s seat, staring straight ahead and looking stressed. Her moving to the window seemed to shake him from his daze as he started to make his way back inside.
He was acting strange. David was her rock. Her quiet strength in stressful times. He was patient and took his time to think things through before acting or offering his opinion. To see him shaken up was worrying.
“What’s happened? Is Shane okay?” Yuna asked as she opened the door for him, not even letting him get through the door first.
“Huh? Oh, no. I mean yes, yes he’s fine,” David said, moving past her to sit down. He sat in silence for a moment, face scrunched up in thought before he seemed to realise that Yuna was still hovering next to him waiting for more information. ”Sorry honey, he’s fine. I promise. I just saw something… um… something I don’t think I was meant to see.”
“What do you mean ‘saw something’? Like drugs? Was Shane doing drugs?!”
“No! No, never,” David reached out to squeeze her hands before pulling her down to sit next to him. “Maybe you should sit down for this.”
“Sit down for this?? What do you mean? What’s wrong with Shane?”
“Nothing's wrong with Shane. I just… I don’t know if he would want me to tell you.”
Yuna felt close to bursting a blood vessel. “Tell. Me. What?”
“Well, uh… someone was there…”
“Oh,” Yuna let out a sigh of relief, “Rose? Do you think they’re back together?”
“Not Rose.”
“Not Rose?”
“Yes…. uh… someone else.”
“David, I am sick of playing 20 questions with you. Who did our son have with him? Tell me. Now.”
“Well, I’m going to need you to stay calm and remember that you love Shane no matter what.”
“Of course I love Shane but I won’t be calm for much longer if you don’t tell me what is going on.”
“Okay well, you know Boston?” David scratched the back of his neck and refused to meet Yuna’s eyes.
“David.”
“Um, more specifically the Boston Raider?”
“The Boston Raiders?!” Yuna’s voice rose in pitch, volume and mild fury.
“Yes, the Raiders. Which, remember, you both said we didn’t hate anymore.”
“Someone from the Boston Raiders is with Shane? Was it their GM?,” Yuna kept going, not stopping for David to answer any more of her questions. “What is that boy doing? We only just re-signed with the Metros last season. He still has a few more years before he’s a free agent again and we fought hard for a no-trade clause. Did he mention wanting to move to Boston?”
“It wasn’t the GM… It was a player.”
“A player? He doesn’t have any friends playing for Boston. Does he?”
“Umm, I don’t think this was just a –”
David was cut off by the sound of another car coming up the driveway. Yuna looked out the window to see Shane’s car pulling into the driveway.
“Yuna, please try and stay calm.”
“I am calm. I’m very calm right now. And I’m sure that Shane can give me a good explanation for why he was meeting with a Raider behind our backs,” Yuna watched her son make his way inside, before spotting the man walking behind him. “Is that…?”
“Hey, it’s me, Shane.”
