Summary
It’s 1996. Mike is a low-profile writer who has grown unhealthily fixated on his childhood best friend after an overdue epiphany; Will is a New York City-formed gallery assistant with a wealthy boyfriend and a fancy studio, who has managed to move on. Mike and Will stayed in touch after Will left, but only formally: their almost daily casual calls soon thinned into weekly, dry check-ins, and Mike's New York trips ceased within three years.
Seven years into this polite friendship, hollowed out by distance and mutual unspoken resignation, Mike is still drowning in unanswered what-ifs fed by trauma and self-sabotaging tendencies. Every place Mike sets foot in Hawkins, Will’s shadow follows him, and Will’s voice lives in his head; Mike would do anything to be released from his regret.
–
Under the pretext of meeting with a publisher, Mike travels to New York to see Will, determined to prove to himself that it is, at last, too late to love him properly.
