Centaurs captain and forward Ilya Rozanov was fined $5,000 on Thursday, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for this two-handed slash to Montreal Voyageurs defenseman Gilbert Comeau.
The NHL Department of Player Safety announced the fine two days after Ottawa’s 6–1 win at Bell Centre. The incident occurred after Comeau was initially assessed a tripping penalty for a knee-on-knee hit on former Voyageurs captain Shane Hollander. Rozanov’s slash appeared to be in response to the play, and both players were given five-minute major penalties.

Ottawa’s coach Brandon Wiebe was asked about Rozanov’s actions during his postgame media availability.
“Of course we would like to encourage our players, and especially our captain, to play a clean game, but it was clearly a knee”, Wiebe said. “We are never going to blame a teammate for trying to defend a teammate, especially not with Hollander’s history in this place and with this team.”
Hollander’s departure from Montreal continues to loom large for the Voyageurs, who have missed the playoffs since his exit and have spent much of that time near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
Comeau was asked about the slash during his post-game press availability, in which he called Rozanov a “hazard”, a “nightmare” and a “reckless player unworthy of the captaincy”, insisting his foul on Hollander was a clean hit.
Montreal has offered ESPN no additional comment beyond stating that they believe the fine to be wholly insufficient.
The teams will meet again in two weeks, when Montreal visits Ottawa.

The Montreal Voyageurs are extremely disappointed that Centaurs forward Ilya Rozanov was not suspended for his horrifying act of violence last night at Bell Centre. Rozanov is a repeat offender with a long history of these type of acts and we find it shocking that the NHL and their Department of Player Safety failed to take the appropriate action and suspend him indefinitely. We view this as a dereliction of duty by the NHL Head of Player Safety, Peter Johnson, and believe he is unfit to continue in his current role.

The Ottawa Centaurs host the Montreal Voyageurs this week in a rematch that promises fireworks. After last week’s controversial on-ice incidents involving Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov and Gilbert Comeau, tensions are still running high.
Ottawa’s coach Brandon Wiebe has assured the press that captain Ilya Rozanov will be focused on keeping the team disciplined, making sure the Centaurs don’t let emotions get the better of them (this time).
On the other side, Montreal will likely keep a close eye on Hollander. The former Voyageurs standout has been central to last week’s clash, and many expect Montreal’s defense to try to disrupt his flow.

That said, hockey is a fast-paced, high-intensity game, and the events of Saturday night need to be seen in context. The earlier on-ice interactions between Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov, and our player Gilbert Comeau created a tense environment where emotions ran high. Montreal Voyageurs defenseman Gilbert Comeau spoke to ESPN on Monday ahead of his one-game suspension for instigating a fight with Ottawa Centaurs forward Shane Hollander last week.
Comeau called the suspension “frustrating", insisting he was just reacting to what was happening on the ice. “I play hard, I play fair, and I don’t shy away from standing up for my teammates", he said. “Apparently, you can’t play around anymore in this League. People are too soft for it. Okay, noted.”
Asked about Hollander’s role in the incident, Comeau was pointed but measured. “I’ve got no problem with anyone on the ice, but sometimes players create situations that escalate. I feel like I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
And when the conversation turned to his former teammate, Comeau didn’t hold back. “If Hollander wants my advice, I’d tell him to focus on the puck instead of chasing after Rozanov all the time. Maybe then he wouldn’t be playing second fiddle on a third-rate team.”

Gilbert Comeau suffers shoulder injury during brutal loss against San Jose
Montreal Voyageurs defenseman Gilbert Comeau left Tuesday night’s game against San Jose after falling awkwardly along the boards in the second period, an incident that resulted in a dislocated shoulder, the team confirmed on Wednesday.

The injury occurred when Comeau lost his edge while attempting to pivot near the blue line. He slammed into the boards and went down hard, immediately clutching his right arm before being helped off the ice by team staff. He did not return to the game. After a frustrating three periods, the Voyageurs remained scoreless against San Jose, whose young forwards tallied five goals.
Comeau was evaluated following the loss and will be sidelined indefinitely. The Voyageurs announced that he is expected to miss multiple weeks and will be re-evaluated as his recovery progresses.
The injury comes amid heightened scrutiny surrounding Comeau following last week’s highly charged rematch against the Ottawa Centaurs, a game that featured multiple fights, misconduct penalties, and resulted in a one-game suspension for Comeau for instigating a fight with his former captain Shane Hollander.
Montreal has declined to comment further on Comeau’s status beyond the injury update. Head coach Theriault described the incident against San Jose as “unfortunate” and emphasized the team’s focus on regrouping during this increasingly difficult stretch of the season.
The Voyageurs have now lost four of their last five games and continue to sit near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings as injuries and disciplinary issues compound an already challenging campaign.
Comeau will not travel with the team on its upcoming road trip.
