Summary
Over Christmas break, Will comes out to his friends a few months into their first year of college. After some time apart, Mike can hardly believe the person standing in front of him is the same shy, lifelong best friend he’s known since kindergarten. Will has grown into himself away from Hawkins, surrounded by studios and artists and people who seem to see him for who he truly is.
Maybe if they’d gone to the same college, the change wouldn’t feel so stark. Maybe it would’ve happened slowly, together. How did Mike miss the most important months of his best friend’s life—and even more pressing, why didn’t Will come out to him first?
While Will and the others seem to be thriving, Mike feels stuck in dreary Seattle, studying something safe and going nowhere. He’s happy for them, truly. So why does it feel like he’s being left behind?
_______________Or, Will comes out to his friends, and Mike can no longer ignore the colossal mistake that is his choice of major—entirely unrelated to Will’s sexuality, of course.
