"You sure look happy, today," Sam's mom said, tousling his hair like she did when he was a child, even though she had to stand on her tiptoes to reach.
"Mo-ommm," Sam protested, swatting her hand away playfully. He held up the knife he'd just pulled out of the drawer, using it as a mirror to make sure his hair still looked okay. He wanted today to be perfect.
"I'm just saying," Jodi continued, leaning her hip against the counter where Sam was assembling sandwiches for his date hang out with his boyfriend best friend. "I mean you're always singing, so that's nothing new, but you just seem… happy."
Sam felt his cheeks burning as he spread peanut butter on four slices of bread. He was happy. He was deleriously happy, actually. Ever since he'd kissed Sebastian in the back alley behind the Saloon a couple of weeks ago, they'd spent most of their free time together. This wasn't anything new, and certainly wasn't enough to explain his good mood, but the fact that their hangouts involved many hours of kissing absolutely did. He wasn't about to explain that to his mother, though.
"I guess," Sam said after a moment, replacing the lid on the jar and reaching for the grape jelly.
"I don't suppose Sebastian has anything to do with your good mood, does he?" Jodi said, winking at him. "I've noticed you are hanging out with him more often than normal." She paused. "And that's saying something," she added, shaking her head.
Fuck. Don't panic, don't panic, Sam thought. It wasn't that he didn't want to tell his mother about his relationship with Sebastian - it was more that he and Seb hadn't put a label on anything yet themselves. He certainly wasn't going to tell her that they were dating until he confirmed it with Sebastian first.
"I mean, we've been coming up with good lyrics and shi… stuff for the band," he said, holding back from swearing at the last second.
"Mm hmm," Jodi said, watching him close each sandwich and begin putting them in a plastic bag. "And I'm sure lyrics are the reason you spread the jelly in the shape of a heart on one of the sandwiches."
He looked at her sheepishly, and she seemed to take pity on him. "Alright, alright, I'll stop teasing you," she said, taking the peanut butter and jelly jars from the counter to put them away. "But if you ever wanted to tell me something…"
"Yeah, yeah, I know." Sam cut her off. "You're always willing to listen.” He kissed her on the cheek. "I'll be home later," he said, leaving the kitchen with the bag of sandwiches.
"Bye Sammy," she called to him, "have fun! Say hi to Sebastian for me"
Sam rolled his eyes and put the sandwiches inside the backpack he'd already packed with his mom's old picnic blanket. He grabbed the backpack and his guitar case, and headed outside, quickly making his way through Cindersap Forest to the spot where the Flower Dance would be held the next day. He spread out the blanket and settled in to wait for Sebastian.
He pulled out his guitar, figuring he might as well get in some practice while he waited. Like always, time slipped by unnoticed as he focused on his music, and when he next looked up, Sebastian was approaching.
"Hey," Sebastian called once he was in earshot, seeming to pick up his pace.
"Hey," Sam answered back, pulling him into a shy kiss after he'd sat down next to Sam. "You hungry?" he asked.
"Starving actually," Sebastian replied, his cheeks a little pink. "It's a long walk here."
“Let's eat then.” Sam reached into his backpack for the sandwiches. “I got peanut butter and jelly. Sorry, it's grape. It's all we had since it's Vince's favourite.”
“Grape's okay,” Sebastian said with a small smile that made Sam's heart skip a beat. “I brought snacks," he added, handing Sam a can of JojaCola and opening a bag of cheese puffs that he placed between them. "Hand me a sandwich?"
Sam passed him the one with the jelly heart (not that Seb needed to know that), and, after they'd eaten, Sebastian laid down on the blanket, staring up at the sky with a smile on his face while Sam played guitar again. Yoba, he's so hot, Sam thought, glancing at his boyfriend now and again as he played. His hoodie had ridden up a bit revealing a sliver of pale skin and an enticing happy trail Sam wanted to explore more than anything else.
Unable to resist any longer, Sam set his guitar aside and leaned over Sebastian, dropping a brief kiss onto his lips. He was about to pull away when Sebastian reached his hand behind Sam's head to hold him in place. He thought Sebastian might kiss him again, but Sebastian just stared at him, a look of adoration on his face so strong it made Sam's heart ache. Sebastian shifted his hand to tuck a stray piece of hair (thanks Mom) behind Sam's ear, still gazing at him with that intense look.
"Is there something on my face?" Sam teased after a moment.
"No," Sebastian said, softly. "Just… you're perfect you know?" Sam felt himself blushing and Seb leaned up to kiss him.
"Hey, I got you something," Sebastian said, as he pulled away. He sat up and reached into his hoodie pocket, removing a small box. He hesitated a moment, and then handed it to Sam.
Sam grinned, wriggling with excitement as he opened the package to reveal a small wooden flower nestled inside. His breath caught and his eyes darted between the flower and Sebastian. Was this…?
“I would have gotten you a bouquet, but I know you're allergic,” Sebastian said, confirming Sam's suspicion. Sam gasped as Sebastian continued: “Sam, will you be my boyfriend? Like… officially?”
“Of course I will Seb!” Sam gushed, then his lips met Sebastian's again.
