Summary
A batch of onigiri from start to finish takes a little over an hour to make.
First the rice has to be washed, then soaked for twenty minutes before cooking, which takes roughly another fifteen; and then it has to cool down for a further ten so that you don’t get steam burns trying to handle fresh, piping hot rice with your hands. In the meantime, the fillings can be prepared (things like simmered kombu, salted salmon, seasoned bonito flakes), and then finally comes the shaping. An experienced cook can do two or sometimes even three onigiri in a minute, depending on what the filling is and how fancy they want to make them look—rolled in things like sesame seeds or furikake before being wrapped with nori and served.
Right now, the timer has just gone off on the rice cooker, which means Sanji still has about fifteen to twenty minutes left before he’s done—a length of time in which Zoro is fairly certain that he’s going to lose his goddamn mind.
Zoro touches himself while Sanji uses his observation haki to watch. Featuring art by the amazing Snazzy Newton!
