Summary
Prewar, Lucy was only steps away from getting her Master's, dealing with the end of her first serious relationship, and facing the truth that her mother didn't just disappear--she was murdered.
Postwar? After spending over two hundred years in stasis, she's living in the Griffiths Settlement with the Goodest Dog Ever and her adopted daughter, Janey. When they aren't there, they're on the road with the caravans, as Lucy supplies anti-feralization medications to settlements all over New California.
When the settlement's leader, Lee Moldaver, turns out to be the woman who broke up her parents' marriage, Lucy doesn't want to take the deal she's offering, but Moldaver claims to know where Lucy's father and brother are.
Despite being wary and suspicious, Lucy starts putting together a caravan to travel north and escort a scientist back to Griffiths. A ghoul who calls himself simply 'Ward', (as in, Howard) comes looking for a job as a caravan guard. He has the most enticing voice Lucy's ever heard... but she's not about to introduce a man who she's in a short-term relationship with to her kid.
