Summary
He was my nephew; I was his uncle. But with barely a few months between us, it often felt as if we were equals. He was older, if only by a hair. My father—his grandfather—desperately sought to end the divisions that plagued our family, forcing us together from a young age. We shared the same wet nurse, trained side by side in the castle yards, and endured endless lessons in the same stifling chambers. But even his efforts were no match for the hatred that ran so deep it seemed impossible for any bond to form. He was black; I was green.
