Work Text:
Oscar stretched, yawning. 8 in the morning is too early for classes to be held, he thought, severely regretting his course choices. He was in a sound engineering degree, and when picking his classes, he decided, ambitiously, that he would try to cram as many courses in as possible to finish his degree a year early. His only saving grace was his roommate, Lando, a third-year business student who also happened to be taking the same early-morning class as him, as an elective. Oscar suspected he only took the class out of solidarity, despite Lando's insistence that he took it to get better at music production, because no sane person would willingly take an elective that early.
He laid in bed a moment longer, before reluctantly leaving the warmth of his blankets behind and digging through the fridge for something to eat. "Lando," he called. "I'm going to stop at the shops for breakfast before class, you want a ride?"
He was met with silence. "Lando?" Oscar tried again, knocking on the other boy's door. "I'm heading out, it's almost time for class. You up yet?" At this, he heard a groan from in Lando's room. "I'll wait in the car for you, but I'm leaving in a few."
Oscar left the small flat, shivering as the cold winter air met his face. He walked to the car, cursing at the chill of the seat. Deciding to let the car warm up while he waited, he pulled his phone from his pocket and opened his chats with his friend Logan.

He blinked confusedly at his phone before realising with a start that he was going to be late to his class if he didn't go with Oscar, who was about to leave him behind. Shit! he thought, panicked, as he quickly got dressed and ran out the door, heaving a sigh of relief when he saw the hideous orange Civic still parked on the curb.
"Oscar!" Lando panted, sliding into the car next to Oscar, startling the younger.
"Thought you weren't coming for a bit there, mate, I was about to leave without you- what took you so long? Late night, I suppose?'
"Something like that," Lando laughed. If the late night in question was staying up too late thinking about you, was what he wanted to say. There were some things he wouldn't dare say out loud, and that was one of them.
Humming, Oscar put the car into drive, asking where Lando wanted to stop for a bite. Lando shrugged. "What about that restaurant on campus? The one Yuki works at? I've heard they sell good pastries there, for something quick, and I've been meaning to give them a try."
"Sure," came Oscar's response. "What were you thinking? I might just go for a plain croissant, myself."
Lando agreed, deciding to just get the same, as they pulled into the parking lot. Their building was just on the opposite side of the green from the restaurant, so they elected to just walk over rather than drive. The boys got their pastries before setting off on their way to class.
"Fuck, it's cold out," Lando said, shivering. "I really should have worn a warmer jacket."
Oscar gave him a sidelong glance, before wrapping an arm around Lando's shoulders. "This better? It's not much, but…" he trailed off, looking away. "Hopefully it'll be warmer inside, if the heat's not broken again."
"Ha, hopefully!"
Soon, they made it to their class, getting to their seats just in time. Oscar's phone buzzed in his pocket, signalling a new text. He slid it out of his pocket, checking it surreptitiously.

The class passed uneventfully, and the boys parted ways in the hall. Oscar's next class was with none other than Logan Sargeant himself, and the smug bastard would not stop smirking and giggling at him.
"What's your problem?" Oscar hissed at Logan. "Who did you set me up with, anyway? Don't be so proud of yourself, you don't even know if we'll like each other yet. This is a bad idea."
Logan simply laughed at him. "I promise you'll like the guy, Oscar, it'll go fine! You should come to mine before the date and I'll help you get ready, don't need to scare off your date with your fashion taste, now, do we?"
"You suck!"
Come Friday, Lando had gotten himself worked up about the whole "date" thing. He worried that there would be nobody there, that it was some humiliation thing, or, worst, that "unknown number" was actually a killer-to-be. He paced his room anxiously, wishing he could take someone with him for safety, but Oscar had left half an hour ago and Lando's friends were all busy.
Part of Lando's worry, he thought, also stemmed from how much he didn't want to go on a date with someone he didn't even know. He had his heart set on someone already, thank you very much, and that someone shared a bedroom wall with him.
He finally settled on an outfit to wear, dark jacket over a simple white button-up paired with black slacks, and set out to Yuki's restaurant.
The cool wind pummelled him as he walked the six blocks to the restaurant. When he arrived, two minutes after six, he fixed his hair in the window and lamented over the redness of his nose. Laying a hand on the door, he breathed a shaky sigh. Remember, Lando, he told himself, this doesn't have to turn into anything. You can just have a nice dinner and conversation and part ways. It's just a single date, not an arranged marriage.
"Logan, c'mon, who is it? Do I really have to go?" Oscar knew he was being whiny, but he was nervous and wanted to stay home. He didn't want to go on a date unless it was with a British man with curly hair and a strange name.
Logan rolled his eyes at Oscar playfully. "You'll find out soon, Oscar, now grow up and put those drawstring jeans away! You don't have to go out with him anymore if you seriously don't want to, but I have a feeling you're gonna like him." He passed Oscar a linen shirt and dark-wash jeans. "Now, put these on, I'm not letting you out of this apartment in shorts and a tee."
"Okay, mum," was the exasperated retort. Oscar took the clothes into the washroom and changed, and returned to see Logan typing on his phone. "Who're you texting?"
"Nobody!"
"I know a lie when I hear one, Sargeant, why so secretive? Is it the date?"
"No, just texting Yuki to make sure the place is all nice for you two! You're at table 481, by the way."
"Right… So, are we ready, then?"
"Yeah, just let me grab my keys!"
The pair reached the restaurant at ten to six, "so your date isn't kept waiting," according to Logan.
Yuki met them at the door, welcoming them warmly. "Hey, you two! I'll take you to your seat, Oscar, and Logan, I'm taking my break now so we can talk, if you want?"
"Sure thing!"
As Oscar was seated, he pulled out his phone to text Lando.

Oscar swallowed at the bitter lump growing in his throat. He knew he couldn't stop Lando from dating, but that didn't stop it from hurting. At least it was six already, and he could use his mystery date to take his mind off Lando.
Wait, six? Oscar blinked at the clock. His date still hadn't arrived, and he began to worry that he'd been blown off.
A minute later, the bell above the door jingled, and in walked Lando Norris, looking prettily flushed from the outside chill.
"Hey, I'm La- Oscar? What are you doing here?" asked Lando, startled. "Maybe I got the wrong number…" he muttered to himself, pulling out his phone.
"I'm waiting for that date Logan set me up with," Oscar responded. "I don't even know what the bloke looks like! He was supposed to show up a few minutes ago, maybe he's late…"
Lando squinted at his phone, then at the plaque on the table, then at his phone again. "Funny, since I'm here for a date too, at this table, and I was supposed to get here four minutes ago…"
The two looked at each other. "Wait…" Oscar started. "Was it a blind date for you, too?"
"…Yes?"
Oscar started to laugh quietly, eyes wide. "Who set you up for it?"
Lando read off the phone number, as Oscar's laughing became more and more crazed.
"That's Logan's number… oh, that bitch!" Oscar's laughter died out, looking away from Lando. "Guess we're on a date together, then, huh?"
"Yeah, I guess so…"
Both boys looked back at each other, cheeks pinkening. Oscar was the first to speak again. "You don't have to stay, if you don't want to," he said. "I'd understand if you didn't want to be here with me." He looked down at the table, where he was fiddling with his nails. "We can forget this ever happened, I promise, I-"
"Whoa, hey, I didn't say anything about going home, Osc," said Lando, sitting down across from Oscar. He reached across the table, taking Oscar's pale hand in his own tanned palms. The way they fully encompassed Oscar's hands and made them look so dainty didn't escape either of them, both blushing fiercely. "I want to stay here with you! …if that's okay?" he trailed off, looking at Oscar hopefully.
"You're sure? You're not just saying that to be nice?" asked Oscar, unsurely. "Because I'd love for you to stay, I just don't want to force you to…"
Lando chuckled, squeezing Oscar's hands gently. "I've wanted this ever since you moved in with me, Osc, you're why I stopped going out with anyone. I didn't want to date, if it wasn't you."
"I-"
"Yes!" came a faint cheer from outside. Both men jumped, looking outside to see Logan and Yuki peeking out from behind a bush, clearly spying on them.
Lando and Oscar both began to laugh, leaning in toward each other.
"I feel the same way, Lando," Oscar said around his laughter. "May I…?"
Instead of responding, Lando closed the distance between them, laying his lips on Oscar's gently. It was short and sweet, and they broke apart a moment later, giggling softly. "You may."
Their phones both buzzed simultaneously, a group message from Logan lighting their screens up.
Logan Sargeant has created the group.
Logan Sargeant has added Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri.
Logan Sargeant
FINALLY
Logan Sargeant has left the group.
Back at home, after dinner, Lando and Oscar stood in the hallway in front of their bedroom doors.
"I had fun tonight," Oscar said, blushing. "I lo- is it too early to say 'I love you' yet?"
"I love you too, Oscar," was Lando's reply, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend. "Got a lot of time to make up for, huh?"
"Yeah, I guess we do."
They shared one last kiss before separating, going to bed filled with warmth and the happiest either have been in a while.
