“It’s really not that complicated, Nanny Fine. You said you needed three tickets for tonight. I have three tickets and I can’t be in two places at once. Let’s not make a big deal out of coincidences.”
Still, Fran Fine can’t believe she was holding three tickets to My Fair Lady, on Ma’s birthday, for Ma’s birthday no less. In fact, she’s still stammering and stuttering out “wh wha whattt” by the time CC makes her way from the kitchen island to the door.
Later, after the clock had stricken 12, and she had removed her makeup, changed into her pjs and settled under her duvet, clarity finally dawns on her about the thing that has been bouncing around at the back of her mind.
Slipping her feet into the slippers at the side of her bed, she pads her way over to the vanity table where she had dumped the contents of her clutch. Manicured fingers spread the hodgepodge of items across the vanity’s surface until she spots the ticket stubs.
If the purchase date happens to be the day CC had walked into the kitchen while Fran was crying to Val about not being able to spend money on Ma for her birthday, then it’s just that, a coincidence.
