It started out as a slight irritation in his chest. Nothing some tea and rest won't fix. Splinter thought to himself as he prepared a fresh pot of tea.
The irritation in his lungs developed into a wheezing cough over the next several weeks, lingering in his system far longer than expected, much to the old rat’s consternation. The fits of harsh, wet coughs that overtook him at times had drawn the worry of his youngest, who’d come to visit him in the sewers. His boys were all adults now and had moved out for school and work, building the lives for themselves that Splinter had always dreamt they would.
“Dad, that cough sounds really bad. Didn't you have that same cough when I was here two weeks ago too? You should go to the clinic at the Hidden City, I could take you tomorrow morning. Or at least have Leo check you over, he is going to school for this, ya know. He'd be over in an instant if you asked, Dad.”
He gave Orange a pat on his hand to help reassure his boy. “That won't be necessary, my son. I will stop by the clinic if it doesn't clear up.”
