Work Text:
“Soo.. where were your brothers when we were busy fighting intergalactic aliens?”
“Richard was out on a mission in Blüdhaven, he wasn’t even aware. Drake slept through it all, and Todd was somewhere in the South Asian jungles with the outlaws.” Damian hummed, leaning towards his boyfriend’s chest.
“I don’t know Dami.. for a family of detectives don’t you think they know about us by now?” Damian snorted, turning slightly towards Jon.
“Beloved, they’ve never even met you besides Drake, and he thinks you’re Kon’s normal kid brother.” Jon pouted at the statement, staring back at Damian’s unimpressed stare.
“Well why haven’t they!” Jon whined childishly, Damian had always known the younger was more of a romantic, and while Jon thought the idea of letting everyone know they were dating was fantastic, Damian had nightmares about it.
He smiled slightly at the other’s antics, turning fully towards his boyfriend so that he was now half on his lap. “Jon, I would love to introduce you to them. However,” He emphasises that last part with a flick to Jon’s forehead, who yelped. “It never came up. They’re just too busy that you’ve never crossed paths with them.”
Jon pouted slightly, although more understanding, he’s still quite bummed out.
“Another thing.” Damian looked back at Jon with a hardened stare. The latter shrinks into himself slightly, not sure what he did wrong.
“It’d be most preferable if you stopped doing that.” Jon spiked his head up, levelling Damian with a look of confusion.
“Stop doing what?” The older lets out a deep exhale through his nose, as if he didn’t want to say it.
“Tt. Stop thinking I'm dying anytime my heart rate spikes.” Jon whips his head at Damian so hard the latter was scared he’d experience whiplash, his face turning into a beet red shade.
“I- I do not!” Damian would’ve found the reaction cute if they weren’t having this very serious conversation.
The older boy has to stop another sigh from escaping. Trying to reason with his clingy boyfriend proved to be a bit difficult. He doesn’t particularly miss when they both hated each other during Starro, but it was nice having some space to himself for once.
“Beloved, you do. And I’m quite offended that you don’t think I'm capable?”
It was a low blow and he knew it, but it was Jon’s fault for worrying really.
“Of course you’re capable!” Jon spluttered slightly. He closes in a bit on Damian as if to prove this point. ‘Personal space is non-existent with the Kents.’
“Then why?” Damian hummed, carding a finger through Jon’s hair which gave the younger an invitation to hug Damian fully, resting his ear on the other’s chest right over his heartbeat.
Jon huffed, tightening around Damian. He mumbles something ineligible, to which Damian rolls his eyes at. “Come on Jon, speak up.”
Jon huffed again, albeit louder this time. He gets up from Damian’s chest and stares at the older’s unimpressed eyes. “It’s cus I’m worried about you, okay! I’m invulnerable, you’re not! Yet you’re always trying to run head first into death’s doors and I don’t like it!”
Jon finally confessed, looking away whilst Damian stares at his boyfriend with his mouth slightly ajar, although the reasoning wasn’t as surprising as he expected, he still couldn’t stop the small blush forming on his face.
It was Damian who huffed this time, not knowing what to say, turning away from Jon who was also still facing the other way which led to the both of them not looking at each other.
They have both also decided to ignore the fact that Jon still had his arms around Damian, and that Damian was semi in Jon’s lap.
It was clear Damian was pent up on it, seeing how reluctant he was to bring it up so Jon decides to break their silent game of ‘not speaking to each other until one of them breaks.’ And he speaks up first.
“Look Dami, I’m not calling you weak but just.. be more careful next time okay?” Damian softened a bit once he looked at Jon’s face, (not that he’d ever admit it.) he swallowed as if it hurt him to say it and it probably did but hey he was trying.
“I.. will try. But in this line of work I cannot promise that.” Jon sighed through his nose, although not quite satisfied with the answer, he’ll take it. He lets a smile break through then nuzzles his nose onto the older.
“That’s fine for me.” Jon whispered gleefully when Damian started melting in his arms unconsciously. He’ll save the sleep deprivation scolding for later.
——————————
And sleep deprivation he had, with in lack of better words, how stupid he was.
Yes, Damian has the mind of an assassin, he has the intellectual brain of several PhDs and could graduate highschool and college if father allowed him to, he rarely ever calls himself stupid, however, he’d make this the exception.
Even if the day before he was particularly busy with something, or hadn’t gotten enough sleep the night before, he had never ever forgotten something so life threatening.
The day went well at first, which was a bad sign but Damian dismissed it.
He hadn’t even gotten into a fight with Drake once, and although they’ve made amends it wasn’t uncommon for them to still go at it from time to time. Especially on a team together.
Not a solo mission no, that might’ve been different, but the two were on the team together for a simple task.
Really, it was supposed to be a regular patrol night. With the regular bandits and D-list criminals. It was supposed to be easy.
Easy enough that Damian forgot his own grappling hook and was now pummeling off a 15 story building to his immediate death after being pushed off in the form of multiple criminals sneaking up on him while he was discussing with Richard on his coms.
Todd would never stop making jokes about it. His tombstone would say, squished like a pancake and he was not having it.
He could vaguely hear Drake screaming out for him after realising the youngest bat had not fired his grappling hook yet, but by then he had already fallen too far and by the time Drake noticed, there was no saving him.
It wouldn’t have been the most unpleasant way to die. Embarrassing? Yes. But not painful.
He looked around once more for any ledge, any water, just anything to maybe soften his fall or grab onto but nope there was none.
He’s about 10 or something feet from the ground when he hears Dick and Todd screaming as well. With Dick urging Father to make a desperate call to Superman.
Damian grimaced. It would be quite embarrassing being saved from his impending doom by Super— wait. Super—
Oh dear he was stupid.
“ JON!” He would never be taken seriously after this.
Damian glances down at the ground mid scream, mere inches from flattening. He shuts his eyes and although he always trusts his boyfriend this would have to be a close one.
Instead of the pain blooming from every point in his back, a sharp object comes at him from his side and suddenly he’s having strong arms around him and probably experiencing a wave of whiplash.
He’s being pushed into a strong chest, instincts taking over, he wraps his arms around Jon’s neck, not really caring if anyone saw.
It felt like he was on an asteroid on its way to Earth when suddenly Jon swerved upwards, just in time to avoid bulldozing head first into a corporate building.
He feels a gust of wind assaulting every side of his body, yet he never once felt like he was about to fall anymore, chiding himself for the untrust in Jon earlier.
When they halt to a stop somewhere in the skies above the clouds, with the only sounds that register in Damian’s head being wind and the vibrations of Jon’s rapid heartbeat against his ear that matched his own, as well as the laboured breathing that he wasn’t sure was his own or Jon’s, all he could do is let out a big sigh of relief.
Jon suddenly stops with the breathing, as if aware of something now. He takes that as his cue to look up at his boyfriend who was already staring down at him with a glare.
“You. Are never telling me I can’t panic ever again.” Jon glared even harder.
Damian sighed, resting his forehead on Jon’s shoulders.
“The one time!” Jon continued, “The one time I ignored your heart rate spiking to a deathly amount!” He hissed, grabbing onto Damian’s chin and lifting it slightly.
The latter blushed, but Jon didn’t allow him to look away. “And you almost died! Do you know how fast I left my room? I didn’t even open my window, I broke it!”
Damian opens his mouth to intervene, but was shut up by Jon who gave him an angry peck to his lips as if telling him I’m still talking.
“When I heard your scream I immediately blamed myself! Blaming myself for listening to you when I shouldn’t have, do you know what went through my mind thinking you could’ve died if I wasn’t there sooner?” Jon hissed angrily, tightening his grip around Damian who noticed he was shaking.
“Beloved..”
“No, Dami! You need to be more careful. Please, if not for yourself, then for me?” He registered the younger crying now, small tear drops staining his domino mask, which reminds Damian to take it off and let it flow along with the wind.
He takes this time to wrap his arms around Jon’s shaking shoulders and pull him closer, pushing their foreheads together. “Jonathan Kent.”
Damian thinks he hears a few gasps but dismisses it as the voices in his head, right now he focuses on the boy in front of him, his boyfriend.
“I know I’ve always called you the reckless one, and while you are.” He ignores Jon’s pointed gaze. “I am even more reckless. I’ve always been used to not caring about myself, made to be a weapon, I’ve only thought of myself. Then when I was introduced to Father, and his.. adoption problem , I saw that there was more to me than Damian Al Ghul.”
“When I became Damian Wayne, I was introduced to you, Jonathan Kent. We hated each other at first, which was not surprising.”
Jon groaned, “Could you please stop taking jabs at me.” Damian smirked and gave him a peck, mirroring his actions from earlier. The younger grumbled but the blush was still cute.
“Continuing on, we hated each other. But sooner after that, after what we went through with Starro, then catching feelings, and going through your questionable but lovely dates, and then to finally dating you.”
Damian thinks the gasps are louder in his head this time, but again, he pays no mind to it.
“I’ve realised that even if I do not care about myself as much as I should, there are others who do. There is someone that does. And that someone is you, beloved.”
Damian smiled at the sniffling boy, who was now crying even harder than before and Damian slightly worries at the fact that they are still above the clouds, and Jon could drop him any second, when the grip around him tightens impossibly to the point of bruised ribs.
He lets out a small gasp and instead of worrying about the younger crushing him with super strength, he melts into the same familiar arms once again, disappointed that he thought of not trusting Jon again.
He sighs into Jon’s shaking body, bringing a hand up to rest onto Jon’s head. “14 and still a crybaby.”
“Shut up boyfriend. You almost died.” Damian softened a bit at that, curling into his lover slightly.
He thinks he lets out a chuckle, would probably do more when—
“ Ahem.”
Damian blanches slightly. ‘Oh no.’
“Aw! baby bro has a boyfriend!”
“Demon spawn. Your coms were on.”
The gasps.
“Damian. We will be having a talk scheduled. While I am grateful for having Jon save your life, this was not a part of the plan.”
Maybe falling to his death would’ve been better.
