Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Long ago, the Sheikah set out to solve a problem. This problem was death. Should one with the spirit of the Hero or the blood of the Goddess fall before they could seal the Calamity away…

Well, it wouldn’t end well.

So, they created the Shrine of Resurrection. The information on HOW they tamed death itself has long since been lost, 10,000 years buried.

However, even if it was functional, it was not as effective as one could hope. It could not completely remove injuries, so prosthetics were a necessity. And, worse, it took a LONG time for it to make progress. Too long. The amnesia resulting from prolonged exposure to its power was treatable, but that did not change the fact that no person could pilot it for 100 years, nor the fact that any fully autonomous technology was not powerful enough to pilot the complex mechanisms.

So, they continued to work. And the first AI was forged.

And so it lay in wait, dormant for 10,000 years.

Some may think it would be wrathful at its creators for leaving it to rot, or that it would be cruel to subject an intelligent creation to such horrors. But it was not made to be wrathful, or to be sentient. It only needed to problem solve, fix those placed within.

And it did just that.

Hero’s Spirit recognized.

Scanning…

Injuries:

Skin covering left arm and hand completely burned away.

Lower legs and feet missing.

Left eye and ear missing.

3rd degree burns along lower back.

Fractured ribs.

Punctured lung.

Immense blood loss.

Solutions:_

The AI briefly paused, its programming running through possible methods.

Solutions: Replace burned dermal covering with armored plating._

The Hero would never be burned there again.

Replace lower legs and feet with prosthetics.

Replace eye with standard Guardian Scout camera.

ERROR, no crystal for laser available._

This was exactly why the Sheikah could not use a standard autonomous unit’s programming for the shrine. This roadblock would have blocked anything else. But not it.

Replace eye with standard Guardian Scout camera, excluding crystal.

Fortify surrounding flesh to withstand laser in the event that a crystal is located.

Replace all burned skin along back with flexible armored plating.

ERROR, plating would restrict movement.

Place plating to shift with natural movement in torso.

Place back plating to lock up and take recoil caused by laser.

Replace lung with artificial lung.

Set ribs, allow natural healing to take place alongside induced healing.

Replace circulatory system with standard Sheikah fuel/oxygen distribution.

If the program were capable of emotion, it would be proud. But it was not.

It began to work. The years passed by, and yet the timeless intelligence worked to restore the Hero.

Finally, it finished working. But it was not safe to awaken the Hero in their current state.

So, the Shrine slept again.

And the Hero continued to rest.

Eventually, at the edge of his consciousness, he heard a voice.

“Wake up, Link.”

Notes:

Inspired by “when you glowed blue, the beasts sang” by 6leafclover (also known as GarbageNeonAngels). Basically, in BOTW, the shrine of resurrection had to replace injured parts of Link’s body with sheikah tech. I am planning some BIG angst, and will likely do a sequel for TOTK once I’ve played it, maybe LU but that’s less likely. I also am NOT a hardcore Zelda or even BOTW fan. BOTW was my first Zelda game, and I only started it a few weeks ago. Unlike Pokemon, Undertale, or TOH (all fandoms I’ve written fics for before, though the Undertale ones are staying in my google docs forever), I do not have a comprehensive, always-available understanding of the series' lore. I also haven’t completed BOTW yet, so I will probably only do the prologue and maybe the Great Plateau for now. Also I won’t touch any shipping. I tried ONCE with Lumity, and failed MISERABLY. Turns out being Aroace isn’t good for writing romance, who’d a thunk?
