Work Text:
Catra was internally hating herself. Nine months, nine months she’d known that she and Adora were going to have a baby, right down to the exact day (thanks to Glimmer’s magic). She had made sure that nothing was going to come up and ruin this day. But alas, out of the blue, she’d been called away the whole morning to aid Glimmer with some urgent royal business.
Obviously, Glimmer had apologised profusely, and had made sure the meeting was done with as quickly as possible, but Catra still felt a little annoyed that she had most likely missed the birth of her child. She had so desperately wanted to be there when the moment came… but oh well, nothing she could do about it now.
“Of all the days, Sparkles,” Catra grumbled, as she and Glimmer walked down to hers and Adora's room, Melog following behind them. "Seriously, you couldn't have put off that meeting by like... an hour or two."
"Sorry, you know how royal meetings can be," Glimmer admitted. "But look on the bright side, at least we're done now and you can say hi to that adorable little kitten of yours!"
Catra blushed at the thought of it. She... was really going to be a mother. A mother to a beautiful little half-Magicat child who was going to grow up in a home full of love and comfort. She had been preparing so much for this, as had Adora. Both of them had been practically begging Angella and Micah for parenting advice, to which Glimmer’s parents had more than happily obliged.
"Nervous?" Glimmer wondered.
"A... little," Catra admitted. If she were quite honest... she had been quite resistant to the idea of children. Not that she didn't like children, obviously, but there was that nagging irrational fear that hung over her, the fear that if she had a child of her own... she'd be no better than Shadow Weaver. But after helping out some of the orphans from the war, and seeing how much they adored her... she started to warm up to the thought of being a mother.
When they finally reached Adora and Catra's room, Bow stepped outside, Catra having told him to keep an eye on Adora while she was gone. Though she’d offered to ask one of the royal physicians to stop by, Bow reassured Catra that if Adora went into labour, he could handle it. Apparently, he’d delivered a few babies before. As he saw them, he grinned widely.
"Baby's here!" He whispered.
Catra's heart skipped a beat. "Oh! Is Adora okay?"
"Mhm! And the baby too," Bow replied. "Probably the easiest baby I ever delivered. Adora’s a natural! So uh... you wanna go in? They're waiting for you!"
Nervously, Catra nodded.
Glimmer nudged her elbow encouragingly. "You can do this, Horde Scum."
Smiling, Catra took the door and opened it, walking inside, Melog following suit. Inside the room, she was greeted with a sight straight from her dreams. On the other side of the room was Adora, who was sat upright in her bed, holding a little bundle of grey blankets in her arms. From the side of the blankets... Catra could see a little pair of ears poking out.
Her heart pulsed in her chest. That was her child, her kitten. This was all real, no dream.
Adora looked at her wife as she entered the room, smiling fondly, the happiest she'd been since the day of her and Catra's wedding. "Hey," she whispered.
"H-Hi," Catra replied, nervously walking over to the bed and looking at the tiny baby curled up in the blankets in Adora's arms.
As she sat on the bed, Catra felt her heart racing faster. She had wanted this for so long now... yet, now that she was here, with her wife and their new kitten, she didn't know what to say. Adora just smiled more, her face so full of love, her hands gently cradling the bundle of love in her arms.
"What are you waiting for, Catra?" she said, in an almost teasing way. "Don't you wanna see the baby?"
Unable to form words, Catra nodded, a few tears forming in her eyes.
And then, slowly, Adora pulled the blankets away... and there, Catra saw her baby. The kitten was absolutely tiny, though still a bit bigger than Catra had thought. Their fur was the same shade as her own, if a little lighter and they had her brown hair. As Catra reached over to the baby, the kitten suddenly wriggled and let out a tiny little yawn.
Moments later, for the first time in their very short life, the kitten opened their eyes... and the first thing their eyes laid on was Catra. Their eyes were absolutely beautiful, the same steel blues that Adora's were. As they looked around with their big blue eyes, the kitten stared up at Catra, reaching out with their little hands.
"H-Hey there little one," Catra said, her squeaky voice full of tears. "I'm your Mama."
As Catra held out her hand towards the kitten... as if on instinct, the kitten grabbed Catra's finger and held it as firmly as they could in their little hand. It was at that point that Catra was fully crying, the tears streaming down her face. She couldn’t help it. Her kitten was holding her finger as tight as they could.
Adora giggled. "Are you crying?"
"N-NO!" Catra denied, blushing furiously. "I just... have something in my eye!"
The kitten kept squeezing Catra's finger, cooing as they looked up at her. Catra looked down at the baby and then back to Adora. "Can I... hold them?" she asked nervously. A part of her was worried she’d drop the baby, but she pushed that worry aside. She could do this, she was going to be the best mother the baby could ask for.
Adora nodded, letting Catra take the baby into her arms. Catra held the little kitten close to her chest, gazing at her child with absolute adoration. The kitten cooed in their adorable little voice, looking straight into their mother's eyes. Their little eyes were so full of life and wonder.
Melog then plopped her head on Catra's knee, looking at the baby.
Catra smiled at Melog. "Hey Melog. Say hi to your new little sibling."
The kitten looked at Melog, their little hand reaching out and booping Melog on the nose. Melog just stared back at the baby with a confused look, which made Catra giggle. It was at that point, that all the worries she’d had melted away, replaced by a love for her baby just as infectious as Adora’s.
It was also at that moment that Glimmer and Bow walked into the room, the pink-haired queen eagerly wanting to see the baby. "Sorry!" She excused. "I couldn't wait any longer!"
Adora laughed. "It's alright, Glimmer... come and say hi to your new godchild."
Glimmer sat down next to Catra and laid eyes on the baby. "Oh my stars, they're so beautiful!" She leaned in close. "Hi, little one. I'm your Aunt Glimmer. It's so nice to meet you."
"And I'm your Uncle Bow!" Bow added, the archer starting to tear up as well. "Oh my, they are so precious!”
Stroking the baby’s head, Glimmer sighed. “My mom would sometimes tell me about when I was this small.”
“You’re always small, Sparkles,” Catra teased.
Glimmer rolled her eyes. “Still rubbing it in after all these years, aren’t you.”
“Yeah, and considering who my baby’s mother is, I bet they’ll grow up to be taller than you,” Catra teased.
“Oh yeah, what if they’re taller than you?” Glimmer teased back, making Catra blush. Adora and Bow both giggled.
“Have you thought of a name?" Glimmer then asked.
"Uh... not yet," Catra admitted, rubbing the back of her head. "To be honest, me and Adora didn't really give it much thought. We did kinda give them a name while they were in the womb but…”
"Oh, I have one!" Bow chirped. "Since they're your baby... and they're a kitten... why not call them Kitra!"
"Kitra?" Catra laughed. "Seriously, Arrow Boy?"
"Yeah, short for kitten Catra!" Bow cheered. "Has a nice ring don't you think?"
"I dunno, it feels a bit silly," Catra admitted. "I feel like this little miracle deserves a name all their own."
"Oh um, I do have a name," Adora admitted. "It probably sounds corny but..."
Catra turned around. "Go on, babe, what is it?"
Adora gulped. "Well, why not use the name we had for them while they were inside me? Finn.”
“Finn?” Glimmer wondered.
“I don't know where it came from but it kinda stuck the more I said it. So um... do you think that works?”
Her wife’s eyes widened. "Oh my gosh, yes! That name is perfect!" Catra grinned at the baby. "Here that kiddo, your name is Finn now! Finn!"
The kitten giggled a little, touching Catra's face with their little paws.
"They seem to like it!" Glimmer cheered.
Adora took the baby back into her arms and held them close. "Awww... well, welcome to the world Finn. I'm going to love you so much."
"That's we’re going to love them so much, Dummy," Catra insisted, before she gave her wife a kiss.
Glimmer and Bow just watched the new family in this tender moment, knowing that if they were honest, Adora and Catra were going to do just fine as the mothers of that precious little kitten. No matter what the future was going to bring, Adora and Catra had brought something new and beautiful into the world… and that was something worth cherishing.
