Chapter 1: How We Met

Chapter Text

It was such a hot summer night. The city was getting ready to rest for another long day tomorrow, shops were closing and people were heading home to rest. It seemed to be an ordinary night…except for one person. Or well, a katball in specific. Instead of walking home like anyone else would, she was running for dear life. She looked all around her direction, trying to spot anyone in particular that would raise alarms. Despite her still needing to run, her body was getting too tired from the running. After making sure there was nobody in particular that would seem suspicious, she ran to a small corner that was nearby. Once she had gotten there, she took a set of deep breaths, trying to rest from such a long run.

“ …Mrow. (I think I lost them). “

The katball leaned right onto a wall, feeling so tired. She looked so messed up. Her baggy clothes, her messy curly hair, and her tired eyes all gave away that she was in such a tough situation at the moment. Retro looked over at what she was carrying the entire time, being a worn brown messenger bag. She opened it up and checked if she still had what she put in there earlier, sighing loudly in relief that everyone was still there. She couldn’t lose what was in her bag, it had to be protected at all costs from…them.

“ Mrow meow meow. Meow mew. (Ok Retro, you got this. Just try to get back home as quickly as you can.) “

Retro decided to walk, needing rest from the chase that had happened earlier. Make extra sure she would be ok, Retro stayed in the dark. She knew being in the open was dangerous. She knew that there were people looking for her. She just needed to get home fast and keep her belongings safe, no matter what. The warmth of the summer night made her feel hazy, making notes to try to get some water whenever she can. That's when she stopped, noticing that something was…off. She could feel someone's presence nearby, something that felt too off. With her guard up, Retro looked all over her current direction. That's when she noticed that…

There was someone blending in the location, someone that Retro knew was dangerous.

With a quick sense of thinking, Retro quickly dashed off, hearing the yells of the person nearby as they chased after the katball. Retro couldn't think at first. Her only response was to get away as fast as possible. She couldn't let the person catch up to her and take away what she had in possession. As she ran, she noticed that a set of alleyways were coming up, ones that had multiple sections.

“ …mrow. (Perfect.) “

With her quick move, Retro entered the alleyways. She went through random section after section, feeling the person chasing after her getting confused about her whereabouts. The plan was working. She couldn't care less if she got lost, Retro needed to get away. Each time she went deeper in the alleyways, she felt a little more safe. As she stopped for some deep breaths, she heard some people nearby. Retro quickly hid in the shadows, listening carefully to the people's conversation.

“ HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO LOSE HER!? “

“ I dont know! That fucker was too fast to keep up! How was I supposed to catch up! “

“ Ugh, I knew you’d be useless for this! “

Within the arguing, the yelling voices slowly shut off. Retro took this as a sign to get out of the dark, feeling relieved despite being shaken up. The group was definitely not around anymore. Retro looked around her surroundings, feeling a sense of anxiety. She wasn't too sure if she was totally in the clear, which was why she was caught off guard when-

“ HEY, THERE SHE IS! “

Retro’s eyes shot up, looking at the direction that the voice came from. There they were, the people that had been chasing after her. Their gray cloaks hid most of their bodies, the mandatory outfit for what they were associated with. Retro felt her body shake, seeing the group get close. Someone in the group, most likely the leader of the group, stepped up front. A small smirk could be seen under the cloak, making Retro feel sick.

“ Hello, Retro. You’ve caused us so much burden over the past few months, hm? Why don't you make this easy for us? Hand us back all the slander you have against the church, and we may spare your life. Don't make this so hard now, less you want to lose something else tonight. “

Retro swallowed some of her spit, feeling trapped. She could just give them what they demanded…but she can't. She couldn't give up everything she had against the so-called ‘church’. She had to keep it with her. She had to make sure it got out to the public.

“ Hiss mrow! (I am not giving everything back to you! “

“ …fine then. You've asked to do this the hard way. “

Everyone started to approach the katball, all getting ready to forcibly take what she had. This was it. This was the moment Retro would die. She would never get to expose the cult. She would never get to have a normal life. Everything will end tonight. She would fail not only herself, but everyone.

…but she couldn't let that happen.

With a quick aim, Retro took out a can. With no way of looking at the direction she would hit, retro sprayed the can at the group. Everyone fell to their knees screaming at what they were hit with. Retro quickly took off, looking back at the can as she sprinted. Thank god today was the day she remembered to pack that bottle of pepper spray. Within minutes, she could hear the screams fade off as she got farther away. Her steps got a little slow, soon being able to take a break. Finally, she was in the clear for now.

Retro started her journey back to her home. She looked up at the sky during her walk, looking at the moon and stars that have been scattered all over. She couldn't help but admire such beauty. She imagined what it would be like to look at that beautiful sky for hours, maybe on a plain field with no care in her soul. All she asked was for peace, maybe even a break from what life had given to her. Just anything that could make her smile. Suddenly, something interrupted her train of thoughts. She heard a strange crack sound down below her feet, wondering what in the world she stepped on. She took a step back, noticing she stepped on...an eggshell.

" ...meow? " (what the hell?)

Retro looked at the bottom of her shoe, wondering if she had accidentally killed something in it. To her surprise, it seemed like something had already hatched from it. Maybe that was the best case scenario, seeing how she didn't want to feel the guilt of killing a potential life. The only question is...who the hell leaves an egg in a dark alleyway? Was the parent trying to kill its child? Maybe she shouldn't question it. Whatever was in the egg could have probably moved somewhere or died by now. Maybe she should just go on her way and forget about it. But as she took another few steps...she saw something move nearby. Something that, in her instinct, made her want to check it out.

Retro approached the moving thing, staying very cautious on what it could be. Hell, she was ready to treat whatever it was just like the cult members. WHatever it was, it took notice of Retro's approach. Retro walked slowly to it, soon noticing that the thing had...red eyes? Those red eyes looked up at Retro, strangely feeling more pleadful than threatening. Retro decided to dig through something in her bag, finding a flashlight in it. She usually didn't use it in public places so as to not get attention, but she needed to see what was looking at her. She turned it on, meeting face to face with...uh...a robloxian...bug?

It had the characteristics of a baby bug, but the body of a robloxian guest. It was such a sight to see, but there was little time to gawk at such a finding. That baby couldn't have been more than a few hours old. Retro had no idea what to do. Where was its parent? Did it even have a parent on its way? ...It looked so scared and helpless. Retro didn't have the heart to just leave it on its own. for god's sake, it was just a baby. Retro softly placed her paw on the little critter, trying to let it gain some trust on her. Thankfully, the little bug accepted her touch. She took it as a sign to carefully grab onto the critter, holding it with such care. She had no plan on what to do now. She decided it was best to walk back to her home with the baby in her hands, seeing how she didn't feel safe enough to walk to another location with the little bug.

maybe when she got home she'd figure out what to do.
