Summary
There was an unnatural stillness to the air. It was the impending sense of doom felt before disaster strikes. The calm before the storm, as if nature was holding its breath in anticipation for what was to surely be a spectacular show. No birds chirped; no breeze rustled leaves. Wolved ceased their howling; creaks stopped bubbling. Mount St Helens was quiet for the first time in history.
It started slowly; a rumble deep beneath the earth. It ended in fire and pain. The earth was scorched worse than any wildfire, black and grey where the lava had cooled. Death and destruction were palatable in the air, Hades and his brood working overtime to get the influx of souls processed. There was no discrimination in the destruction. Flora and fauna alike had been wiped out. No one could escape the blistering heat; the poisonous gasses; the choaking clouds of ash and smoke. What little foliage that wasn’t burned away by the lava was left to the mercy of the resulting wild fires. Mortals had begun emergency evacuations. It was too little too late.
