    Summary

Daniel Woodrell’s novel, Winter’s Bone, depicts the brutal struggle of a teenage girl to survive when faced with starvation, homelessness, and the harsh code of her own felonious family. Debra Granik, in her 2010 film by the same name, ostensibly depicts that very same struggle. This essay shall delve into some of the choices Granik made when adapting Woodrell’s work, with the intent of exploring what impact these choices have on the overall tone and message of the story: that in order to present the reality of the Ozarks without edging into the realm of poverty-porn, Granik chose to alter scenes in a way that centers the impact they have on Ree, rather than the shock-value they present for the audience.
