“Don’t avoid it,” Nanne said firmly. “Face it, Astarion. You would have killed me.”
They spoke about a hypothetical, he knew. They would never know just how close he’d come that night, ten years ago, to making their words a reality. How gladly he would have let them die, all for the sake of a rotting rat and avoiding the lash, were it not for some flash of conscience.
“I would have killed you,” he choked out, and the words destroyed him.
