Summary
Pearl supposed she should be happy. She had been called from the fifteenth years training on one of the upper plateaus to stand beside the elder to observe the thirteenth year fledglings training, after all. It was a unique honor, and they’d all seen it as the years went by. To be called to one of the elders sides was a strong signal that you were going to be retained. Keep your name, keep your ties, take the honor of being one of very few the colony deemed worthy of producing and training the next generation. Avian society was nothing but the most brutal sort of meritocracy. Maybe she would’ve been happy, had it been any other day or any other year or any other moment. Maybe happy would’ve been the wrong word. Happy meant bright sparks of late nights giggling under breath in their shared nest or early morning flights out from beneath the watchful eye of those retained from years before them.
Happy wasn’t standing here watching this.
