My Dearest Nephew,
If this letter finds you, I'm afraid it is to inform you that I have. regrettably, passed. I assure you it was hardly my decision, but I spent a long time considering the following one.
As you know, us Sphinx are hardly the generous sort. Of all of us, you have been the most painfully aware... with your father being the way that he is, and all. But, as you also know, I pride myself in being contrarian. I’ve always been a little different from the rest of our family, much to your grandmother’s chagrin. The world wasn’t ready for me, but it happened anyway, and it’s better for it. Even if, in my end, it couldn’t handle me.
I also pride myself in hard work. I had always planned to finally set up shop in Paris, I worked there for years, you know. Fashion designer, consultant, actor, model. I had my eyes on a fantastic shop not too far from Notre Dame in the heart of the city. Lots of window space, a generous, multi-story apartment above it… perfect for renovating into a studio proper. Even a lovely balcony. A real fixer-upper, something that can become amazing.
Considering the fact that you now hold this letter.. Well, that dream of mine will no longer come to light, I'm afraid. So, dear, I leave you a gift. A quite un-Sphinx-like and very amazing one.
I will be doing the next best thing and handing it off to you. I had always planned to have you a part of my life there, the home connected to it was too big for just me and my three cats. The top room alone could function as an apartment. The rent is paid out several years in advance, and I will be including a small inheritance to supplement it.
Don't think of taking the money and hiding in a library, as you often do! Hiding away from your problems. The Lawyers are well paid to make sure you spend the majority of that money on making a life for yourself.
Of course, you do not have to accept the offer. I feel like you won’t, however. You've always been capable of amazing things, and even if you whine and protest and pace around, and grumble and scowl your mother’s scowl, you won’t turn it down. You will be in Paris, after all!! A whole ocean away from your father and on your own.
But you won’t be alone, will you?
I've always been proud of you, dear. I would have loved nothing more than to see you succeed. A man can have many dreams and many things to be proud of. You may not have been my son, but I loved you no less.
So, become amazing, Felix, and don’t miss me too much.
