Work Text:

It started with drinks with Andrea Rojas.

Trouble always seemed to start that way didn’t it?

“You know… I’m surprised your pet reporter isn’t here with you tonight,” Andrea mused, sipping on a glass of wine.

The two successful women were sitting in some up and coming bar downtown that Lena had never heard of before. But, Andrea had and swore by it. Lena had little interest of course, her being so busy these days as deadlines for tech products were approaching. Andrea, however, would hear none of that, dragging Lena out of L-Corp and telling Jess that unless the building was burnt down or Doximites were attacking not to call Lena. Lena had tried to argue, but Andrea had pointed out the faster she went with Andrea, the quicker she could get back to the lab.

So here Lena was, with a glass of whiskey in hand, and already feeling hazy. She was definitely guaranteed a hangover the next day.

“Who… Kara?” Lena asked, surprised by Andrea’s statement.

“No, the other perky reporter that follows you around like a lost dog,” Andrea said drily. “Yes, Kara Danvers. She’s basically attached to your hip.”

“She’s just my best friend Andrea,” Lena replied.

“Really? If I didn’t know better I’d think you two were married, not friends.”

“Married?” Lena squinted, her brain functions impaired by exhaustion and the liquor in her glass. “You think I should get married to Kara?”

“That’s not what I-” Andrea just laughed and shook her head. “You’re wasted huh?”

“You know me, wasting away,” Lena joked with a smile.

Andrea was definitely not as amused as Lena was. “Lena-”

Lena waved her hand in her direction. “Don’t worry about me Andrea. After all, I’m getting married soon.”

Andrea did laugh at that. “Yeah, I think it’s time to get you home.”

The next morning Lena woke up with little memory of the night before, except for one prevalent thought. Andrea had given her a solid piece of advice.

It was so silly, why hadn’t Lena thought of it before?

Kara was her best friend. She was kind and generous. Not to mention she was absolutely gorgeous. Lena was pretty sure half of Cat-co was in love with Kara and Kara didn’t even know it. Kara was also willing to do anything for Lena. Hell, besides the initial lying about Supergirl, Kara had treated Lena better then her last three boyfriends combined (James included). It was kind of like they were already dating.

Dating was difficult and took up a lot of valuable time. And… Lena wasn’t that good at it if she was being honest. L-Corp was like her child and Lena poured part of her soul in keeping it afloat. That was another good thing about Kara. She was understanding of Lena’s work and it’s importance in her life.

Another truth was that Lena wasn’t getting any younger, and she would like to have kids at some point. And Kara was so good with kids. Kara could be a wonderful mother if given the opportunity.

Of course, one must not rush into such a major decision. So after a solid 24 hours of thinking it over, Lena had decided.

She would marry Kara Danvers.

“Do you prefer Coast City or Sub Diego?”

Lena moved from table to table in her lab. Kara was sitting nearby, wrappers of her lunch in front of her. Technically this was supposed to be their lunch break. Yet, only Kara was eating. There were too many things to get done in regards to the wedding and work. Lena was working against the clock on a tech project to help with carbon emissions, and most of her focus at the moment was going towards that. But, Lena had promised once she had finished with the final touch-ups on the device in her hands, she would eat the salad Kara had brought. She thought this was nice. She could kill three birds with one stone, work, lunch, and wedding planning.

“Um, I haven’t been to either,” Kara said.

“Me neither, though I do have an… acquaintance who owes me a favor in Coast City,” Lena mused. “Then again, staying in National City would be much easier.”

Kara took another bite of her burger. Lena would never let anyone else eat in her lab, but well… it was Kara. And she was always so careful of her mess, especially around Lena’s work. It was one of the things that Lena loved about Kara, how considerate she was.

“Do you prefer Summer or Fall?” Lena asked.

“Fall, I guess? So you’re not as sweaty?” Kara said, surprised by the question.

“Mmm,” Lena hummed, turning something. “Fair point.”

“Have you been sleeping?”

“Sleep? What’s that?”

“Lena-”

“I’ll be fine,” Lena said waving her off.

“Try to get at least eight hours tonight?” Kara asked, throwing her trash away. “For me?”

Lena sighed. Well, if your fiance asks a favor, perhaps you should grant it. “Alright.”

“I have to get back to work,” Kara said, nearing Lena’s table. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Of course,” Lena said, not really paying attention. She turned and kissed Kara on the cheek. “Goodbye.”

Lena was so focused on her tech, she didn’t even notice how red Kara’s face was.

“You’re getting married?” Sam asked, shock evident on her face.

She had arrived in Metropolis only days before and now the two of them were out to dinner.

“Yes, I think October should be good, don’t you?”

“But you aren’t even dating anyone,” Sam said as Lena took a bite of her salmon

“Well, not technically, no. But labels are unimportant really.”

“Lena,” Sam said in her no-nonsense voice she typically only used on Ruby.

“Oh come on Sam, it’ll be great. You can be my maid of honor. Ruby’s a bit too old to be a flower girl isn’t she?” Lena mused. “Perhaps Kara can convince Oliver Queen to let his son be our ringbearer at the very least.”

“I’m sorry, are you marrying Kara?”

“Well yes,” Lena blinked. “Who else would I be marrying?”

“I think I might need another drink,” Sam just stared at her for a moment before muttering to herself. “Why am I even surprised?”

“I mean, obviously we’re keeping it on the down-low for now. Last thing I want is for the paparazzi, so not many people know just yet.” Lena signaled to the waiter, who filled Sam’s glass. “I was thinking, for wedding party outfits, do you think my side being red, and her’s blue is too on the nose?”

Sam down the entire glass in one gulp. She motioned to the waiter. “Just leave the bottle.”

“Sam, seriously, I need your help. You know this isn’t exactly my forte,” Lena said.

“Sorry, sorry,” Sam said. “I just- Kara? Kara Danvers.”

“Yes, Kara Danvers,” Lena said, perhaps a little impatiently. “That’s another thing Sam, do you think I should take Kara’s name? I mean, I would never ask her to give up her last name, not only for sentimental reasons but for professional ones. And hyphens are just so… long. But Lena Danvers has an odd ring to it as well. Perhaps we just keep our names.”

Sam just filled up her glass again.

“You know… I was thinking Ireland,” Lena said.

Kara glanced up from her laptop. She was sitting in Lena’s office, working on Lena’s couch while Lena worked on some accounting things.

“Ireland?”

“In October,” Lena mused. “Dubin is nice, but perhaps a bit too touristy. It would be nice, to show you where I come from.”

“You want me to come?” Kara said, seeming even more surprised.

“Of course,” Lena said, narrowing her eyes. Was Kara alright? It wasn’t like her to be this forgetful. “Perhaps we’ll also go to the UK if only for a little bit. Or was there somewhere you would prefer to go more?”

“No, uh no, I’m glad to go wherever you want.”

“Perfect,” Lena smiled. “How do you feel about the Mellen Ballroom downtown?”

“Oh, it’s pretty?”

“I thought so too,” Lena paused. “Side note, do you know how hard it is to find properties not owned by evil billionaires in this city? Who knew they owned so many venues?” Lena huffed. “Seems I may need to diversify my portfolio… again.”

Kara smiled at that.

“What?” Lena asked.

“Nothing… just you,” Kara said, shaking her head, that small smile still on her face. “So, October?”

“October,” Lena confirmed, smiling back. “Side note, what’s your ring size again?”

Lena should have known the whole process was going to smoothly.

Lena was finishing explaining some updates she just made to Kara’s kryptonite shield to Alex while Kara also listened. They were alone in the medical bay, the equipment in Lena’s hands.

“And that’s the failsafe, understood?”

Alex nodded. “Obviously Brainy will understand it better then me, but it’s good I’m also aware, if only for emergencies.”

Lena nodded. “On a different note, what will you be wearing in October?”

Kara and Alex exchanged looks. “October?” Alex asked.

October ,” Lena motioned, hoping it would ring a bell.

“Uh, our trip to Ireland?” Kara asked, tilting her head.

“No, well, yes,” Lena said. “I mean the wedding of course. I’m assuming you’ll be wearing a suit. I mean we still have to talk over the colors, but I’m assuming it’ll be in blue.”

“Lena-” Alex started, but Lena didn’t

“I keep going back and forth on a dress or suit myself, I do look quite good in white, so that’s not particularly an issue,” Lena said.

“Lena, hold on,” Alex said, holding up a hand. “You’re getting married?”

Lena was a bit surprised that Kara hadn’t told her sister yet. “Well, yes, Kara and I are getting married.”

There was a pause. It was dead silent in the medbay as the two women stared at her.

“I’m sorry?” Kara croaked out.

Lena sighed, perhaps Kara needed to get checked for a concussion. She could be forgetful, but not this forgetful. “Kara, we’ve discussed this, remember? We’re getting married here, in National City, at the Mellen Ballroom. We’re honeymooning in Ireland and a few days in the UK.”

Another pause as the two sisters seemed to have a silent conversation.

“Can I have a moment with Kara?”

“Of course,” Lena motioned.

Alex nearly dragged Kara away, leaving Lena in the medbay.

After about half an hour of waiting upstairs, Lena made her way downstairs to find the Danvers sisters. Neither could be seen, but Lena spotted Brainy at his desk.

“Brainy!”

Brainy glanced up.

“Do you know where Kara and Alex went?”

“I believe they are in Director Danvers’ office. They seem to have been arguing for quite awhile,” Brainy paused. “From what I gather I am supposed to congratulate you on your upcoming nuptials?”

“Thank you Brainy.”

“Though, I have one small question.”

“Of course.”

“Did you ever… propose to Kara?”

“Of course I did,” Lena said. “It was quite beautiful actually, we-” Lena paused, searching her mind. “Well it was- I just-” Lena paused.

Well, shit.

Seems she may have forgotten one little thing.

“I have to go talk to Kara,” Lena said.

Lena approached the door to hear a loud discussion from inside. She knocked on the door, putting her hands in her pockets. How had she forgotten to propose? That was a very important part.

There was a beat of silence and then a bit of muttering before the door was opened by Alex. The DEO agent did not look pleased. Which was… fair.

“Could I speak to Kara?”

Alex opened her mouth.

“I know,” Lena said, rubbing her forehead. “Brainy will catch you up. Please can I just-”

Alex glanced over her shoulder at Kara, who gave her a small nod.

Alex sighed, muttering something under her breath about uselessness as she brushed past Lena out the door. Lena closed the door behind her before turning back towards her best friend.

Kara was still in full Supergirl regalia, leaning against Alex’s desk, arms crossed.

Lena didn’t know what to say. “So?”

“So?”

“So… want to do it?” Lena asked awkwardly.

Kara just stared at her. “That’s your proposal?”

“I’m not good with words, you know that!” Lena groaned, placing her face in her hands. “I don’t like talking about… feelings.”

“I know,” Kara said, her voice soft.

Lena peeked through her fingers to see Kara just giving her one of those soft looks of hers, as if she could see right into Lena’s soul.

“I know you know,” Lena said, glancing away from Kara. “it’s part of the reason I love you so much. You know me so well, and yet you haven’t gone running. That’s… kind of insane.”

“You love me?” Kara asked, her voice soft.

“Well of course, you knew that.”

“I didn’t know it was in that way.”

“Kara, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, of course it’s in that way.”

“Well I didn’t know that you wanted to do that until like, an hour ago!” Kara pointed out.

Lena winced. “A small oversight.”

“Small?”

“I’m sorry,” Lena said. “I- well there really is no excuse.”

Kara sighed, glanced up at the ceiling. “Did you really already plan most of the ceremony?”

“...yes?”

“Well… I would want Kryptonian element in the ceremony.”

“Of course,” Lena nodded. She paused. “So… you’ll marry me?”

Kara just stared at her again.

“Oh right, sorry,” Lena coughed. She got down on one knee, taking Kara’s hand. “Your ring should be ready Sunday, FYI. But as I was saying,” she met Kara’s eyes. “Kara Danvers, you are one of the best people I know and I can’t live without you. Will you marry me?”

“Yes,” Kara laughed. “Rao this is crazy. Yes, yes I will marry you Lena.”

Lena beamed, her heart alight. Kara wanted to marry her. She was going to marry Kara. “Wonderful! I’m glad we got this all straightened out,” she glanced at her watch and winced. “I have to get back to work.”

“Of course you do,” Kara said, shaking her head. Though Lena could tell she was more amused then upset.

“I’ll see you for dinner tonight?”

“It’s a date.”

“Perfect, I’ll see you later then,” Lena said, turning to go.

 “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

“Oh, I was planning on calling Eliza later to ask her permission.”

“No that’s not what I- you know what,” Kara grabbed Lena by the front of her shirt and kissed her deeply. Lena melted under Kara’s touch. Her kiss was better then Lena could ever have imagined.

“You forgot your goodbye kiss,” Kara muttered.

“Oh, right,” Lena responded, in a daze. “You know, I think I may have forgot it again, could I get another one?”

Kara laughed at that, and pulled Lena in another kiss.

So yeah, Lena had forgotten to propose, but she doubted she would ever forget the feel of Kara’s lips against her.

Notes:

If I had a nickel for every time I wrote a Supercorp fic where there was a miscommunication regarding marriage, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
