Rumi’s side profile was just—. Ridiculous. The bridge of her nose dipped just right, lips full, catching soft light from the screen. Her cheekbones did this thing—sharp, clean, sloped in a way that made it hard to look away.
Zoey’s eyes dipped to her mouth. Glossy. Soft. Pink.
Then her head tilted the other way, slow and lazy. Back to Mira.
And—Damn.
Mira’s lashes curled naturally, thick and dark. Her brows were clean. The kind of face that always looked stunning in photos. The kind of face that held focus in silence.
Zoey’s eyes dropped again.
Mira’s lips.
Plump. A little pink. Glossed from that balm she always carried but never let anyone else use.
Huh.
“Hey,” Zoey murmured, her voice low, pulling through the silence like a loose thread, “Have either of you ever had your first kiss?”

They were beautiful women, sharp jawlines and high cheekbones, long beautiful lashes, shaped brows, and gorgeous, plump lips—and it hit her just how pretty they both were. Too pretty. “Oh, come on!” Zoey spins around in her pile, hands on her knees as she looks between the two of them, wearing her ‘I’ve-got-an-idea-you’re-going-to-pretend-to-hate’ grin. Her cheeks are impossibly cute. “Be so for real right now. Have you two ever kissed anyone?”
Rumi clears her throat. “Well—”
“Some little nerd in pre-school doesn’t count,” Zoey reminds her.
Rumi’s mouth snaps shut.
“Been a little too busy with world domination, in case you haven’t noticed,” Mira says drily, though anyone who knows her—and that would be only the two people currently in this room—could see the faint blush that’s risen on the apples of her cheeks.
“Exactly. I was just thinking, I don’t want my first kiss to be with some person I barely know on an awkward first date. I want it to be with someone I really care about. Someone I love.” Zoey looks between Mira and Rumi. “Doesn’t that sound better?”

“Rumi,” Zoey’s voice is impossibly soft, “why wouldn’t I tell you that you’re good?”
Rumi shrugs, feeling raw and exposed in the way she always does after kneeling for them.
She considers the question: she just wasn’t brought up that way. There was never any need for praise or affirmation as a form of encouragement. Not when there were other forms so readily available – imminent choking forms, creeping steadily across her body.
