You can do this, Addams.

Wednesday took a deep breath, her back against the wooden door frame leading into the room she shared with Enid, fighting an unusual feeling in her chest that she was slowly growing accustomed to. She peeked an eye around the frame of the door to make sure her roommate was in the room, quickly spotting the familiar blonde hair with blue and pink highlights before ducking back behind the wall.

Enid will like it.

Wednesday squeezed the plush toy in her hand tightly, silently willing her current feelings into the gift for her roommate. She rubbed a thumb over the worn terrycloth of the toy before turning fully toward the doors, sucking down one last grounding breath before crossing the threshold into her room.

“Heyo, roomie!”

Wednesday’s foot faltered for a second as Enid immediately greeted her, the energetic werewolf bounding happily up to the raven-haired girl, arms clasped behind her back with a wide grin as she stopped before Wednesday.

“Hello, Enid,” Wednesday awkwardly returned, nervously hiding the plush toy behind her back.

Noticing Wednesday’s hands quickly slip behind her back, Enid grinned toothily, asking, “Whatcha got there?”

“The beating heart of a rabbit,” Wednesday lied, hoping to disgust Enid enough to leave her alone for a few moments so she could recollect her thoughts.

“I don’t smell a rabbit,” Enid squinted, eyeing Wednesday as the raven-haired girl fought down an escaping groan. “So what do you have, roomie? Is it food? A new book? Maybe a love letter?”

Wednesday visibly recoiled at the last question, shocked that Enid could have asked such a thing.

Me?

A love letter?

I would not accept a letter declaring one’s love from anyone in this school, that insinuation is laughable at best!

You know, for most anyone I would tear the letter to shreds, dip the pieces into arsenic, and then force-feed them to whoever concocted such a foolish letter, but…

…I can’t help but feel it would be different from you, Enid.

“It’s, umm…” Wednesday searched for another lie as she struggled against her own mind, attempting to hide away the resurfacing feeling she got whenever she was around Enid.

“It’s a stuffed animal!”

Wednesday opened her eyes to find Enid looking around her back, unsure when she closed them but immediately pulling the stuffed toy out of Enid’s line of view.

“What are you doing with a stuffed animal, Weds?” Enid asked curiously as she tried to sneak another look at it, though Wednesday moved expertly to block her view.

“It’s…a gift,” Wednesday stated simply.

“For who?”

“A friend,”

“A friend?”

“Yes,”

“You’re giving someone a gift?”

“Yes, Enid, I am,”

“Is it filled with deadly scorpions or something?” Enid asked after a pause, sizing up the stuffed penguin Wednesday had allowed her to see.

The sky blue secondary color of the penguin had faded almost enough to match the white belly and underside of the toy’s arm. Despite having originally a quite plump toy, it had clearly been cuddled with enough times to squish down the stuffing inside of it, it’s beak slightly misshapen because of this. Smooth brown plastic eyes seemed to watch Enid, not with menace, but almost calmly.

“Please, they would suffocate inside of it,” Wednesday replied with a wave of her hand.

“Cool,” Enid nodded, clearly distracted by the toy penguin in front of her, “Do I know this friend that you’re giving it to? It’s not like you have that many friends lined up around you, so I should know them.”

“Harsh but true,” Wednesday mumbled quickly. “If you must know, you do know the person I am gifting this penguin to.”

“Is it just a gift or is it…?”

“Is it what, Enid?”

“You know…”

“I do not, that is why I’m asking,”

“Is it like a confession of love thing?” Enid asked finally, a curious look sparkling in her eyes.

Yes.

“No,”

“Really?” asked Enid disbelievingly.

No.

“No,”

Enid smirked at Wednesday’s mistake, the other girl sporting a grimace as she accepted that there was no going back from her admittance. Enid grabbed her by the hand and quickly guided Wednesday over to her bed, setting the raven-haired girl down on the mattress before plopping down beside her.

“Who are you confessing to?” Enid asked mischievously, her voice in a low whisper, though Wednesday didn’t understand why. “Is it Xavier?”

“What?” Wednesday gaped, “No! The person I am confessing to is…a much better person currently than Xavier will ever be in his life.”

“Wow, they must be a really great person,”

“They are perfect,”

“Um, Weds?”

Enid snapped her fingers in front of Wednesday’s eyes as they suddenly drifted off, a distant look in them that made it clear she was in her own little world. Wednesday startled before brushing away Enid’s hand away from her, her touch lingering lightly on the back of Enid’s hand. She looked down at the penguin stuffed toy in her lap, inwardly debating giving it to Enid for the thousandth time that day. The raven-haired girl suddenly felt a soft hand resting on top of hers, and she looked to her right to find Enid smiling warmly at her.

“What’s the story behind the penguin?” Enid asked, pointing to it with her free hand.

Wednesday was secretly thankful that Enid didn’t take her hand away from where it rested, and she took a deep breath as she finally settled on the answer she wanted most. Shifting on the bed, Wednesday turned her eyes to meet Enid’s, momentarily getting lost in the shimmering blue eyes that greeted her.

Wednesday started slowly, saying, “In my family, this penguin is sort of an important milestone in our lives. It’s a tradition that my grandmother started one particularly mundane day, and she claims that obtaining the penguin is the way all of us Addamses prove that we are of the Addams family. There are many ways for one to become a member of the family, but according to my father, obtaining this penguin is one of the only permanent ways of being a family member. Once you have it, you are an Addams until the end of time.”

“So, you mean that by giving someone that penguin you’re essentially asking them to become an Addams with you?” Enid observed aloud.

“Yes, Enid. That’s one way to summarize what I said.”

“You still haven’t told me who it’s for, Weds!” Enid huffed as she reclined on the bed, still keeping her hand on top of Wednesday’s, “Are you just going to keep it a secret forever?”

Wordlessly and with little motion Wednesday set the penguin in Enid’s lap, the werewolf girl arching an eyebrow at it for a long moment before her eyes lit up with realization and understanding. She slowly picked the penguin up, pretending to study it closely as she watched Wednesday, noticing a slowly deep red blush on her face that Enid took some pride in being the cause of.

“What are you trying to say with this, Weds?” Enid asked after a moment.

Wednesday could feel her mouth go dry as she slowly said, “I would like for you to become an Addams with me. I never considered a romantic partner before, and I foolishly believed I would never have one, but who can deny such a perfect creation’s radiant beauty and charm?”

“Awww,” Enid blushed, and she moved the penguin to block her face as she pulled her knees to her chest.

“You are perfect to me, Enid Sinclair,” Wednesday continued, “And while I may not be all that you would want from a romantic partner, I believe that I am at least a viable candidate amongst those that you would view romantically. I thought it would be best for me to “shoot my shot”, as you have so horridly said before, and I figured that this would be a passable entry.”

Wednesday stared at Enid for a long silent minute before breathing out, “So…what are your thoughts on this?”

Enid sat motionless on the bed for a few moments before beaming broadly, her usual smile even sweeter to Wednesday as the werewolf girl hugged the stuffed penguin to her chest.

“What I think, Wednesday Addams,” Enid began quietly as she slid over to Wednesday on the bed, the only space between them being filled by the toy penguin, “Is that it’s pretty cool to get both a soft stuffed penguin and an amazing girlfriend in one day!”

Wednesday barely had time to recognize her own reaction toward Enid’s statement before she had closed what little space was between their lips, crashing roughly against Enid’s lips with her own. Proud of Enid’s small squeal of delight when Wednesday kissed her, Wednesday was surprised to let out her own delighted kiss as Enid returned the impassioned action. The two held the kiss for as long as their lungs would allow, barely moving for fear of ruining the experience.

Finally breaking away for air, Enid panted, “Does this mean I get more stuffed animals and kisses from my girlfriend if I want them, Weds?”

“Don’t push it,” Wednesday muttered, still panting from lack of air as she brought Enid’s lips back to her own.

Of course, Enid.

I will give you whatever you desire, no matter what it is or how long it takes me to get it.

Because…

Because I…

“I love you, cara mia,” Wednesday whispered to Enid as she broke the kiss for a second.

Pausing herself, Enid grinned toothily, wrapping her arms over Wednesday’s shoulders, placing a soft kiss on the tip of her nose before whispering back, “I love you too, Weds.”
