Summary
Loneliness is the thread which weaves together the lives of thirteen-year-old Dion Lesage, crown prince of the empire of Sanbreque, and fourteen-year-old Terence Marchand, the youngest child of a knight in the emperor's service. Fearful for their sons' well-beings in the face of duty and grief, their fathers bring them together in a bid for companionship. What follows is a story spanning nearly two decades, in which love, loss, and the fate of a kingdom weigh heavy between them.
While Dion struggles with the death of his mother and what it means to lead a nation, Terence learns that solitude isn't the safe haven he made of it as a boy. Their reliance on each other grows and so too do the burdens of war. When eventually the emperor's schemes take a turn for the tyrannical, Dion and Terence are left to salvage the soul of Sanbreque from the ashes he leaves in his wake.
