Mattholomule always went to Emerald Entrail practices. Always. Every single one.
He told himself it was because how good Gus looked gliding through the air in that unique way of his. Or because it was funny to watch them fail when trying new strategies because it usually involved one of them falling in a super goofy way. And when he was desperate, he told himself it was because he had no life.
But it was really because he loved seeing how happy Gus was playing the sport, his face always flushed with happiness and his smile bigger than ever when practice ended.
Obviously, he never admitted that to himself.
Too mushy.
Today was no different. Usually, he dragged Vee along with him, but she was on a date with Masha today. So Matt was just lazily sprawled on the bleachers, trolling people on Pensta and glancing up every few seconds to see what the team was up to. They were trying a new strategy today, and he was hoping one of them would fall. Hunter in particular, because Willow always caught him, and it was hilarious to see how red his face got.
As if his face didn't do the exact same thing when Gus did something particularly romantic.
Speaking of Gus...
He heard his boyfriend's shriek before he saw the cause, and immediately dropped his scroll to see Gus plummeting from his staff, a random witch hovering above them and cringing slightly.
What the hell?
Bounding off the bleachers, Matt hurried to Willow who was glaring at the witch above them. "What happened?" He panted.
"She," Willow said, jerking her head to the sky, "came flying towards Gus with an extremely fast speed, and then crashed into him. Oh, she is not ready for what I'm about to do to her..." Vines emerged from the ground behind them, but Mattholomule stomped on them.
"Willow. You are not going to be mean. That's my job, remember?" The older witch rolled her eyes but motioned towards the witch, who was already landing nearby, giving him the go-ahead.
He took off at a sprint towards the girl (who's back was facing him), but felt a warm hand clasp around his wrist before he could reach her. He whirled around to see Gus, staring at him with an exasperated look on his face. "What are you doing?"
"She could've killed you, Gus! How are you standing right now anyways?"
"Viney's a super good healer, remember?" (Mattholomule did, in fact, not remember, as Viney was the only person in the Entrails who he wasn't really friends with)
"She healed me almost immediately, because it wasn't even that bad of a fall. I would not have gotten killed! So let's just leave her alone."
Matt didn't budge, still standing stubbornly and Gus knew there was no convincing him to turn back. "Fine. Whatever. But I'm coming with you so you don't beat her up or something."
"Pfft, I could never do that." Matt said, eyes closed. He opened them and a devilish smirk grew on his face. "I could only try."
"Shut up." Gus said, but he was laughing and then Matt was laughing and they had to contain their giggles a feet away from the witch because otherwise it would look weird.
Mattholomule's expression turned serious, and he opened his mouth to speak, but Gus clamped a hand over it. "Actually, I'll deal with her first. You stay back."
"Hey!" Matt protested, but Gus cut him off again. "We can cuddle later or something if you do this."
"I don't need your damn cuddles." Matt scowled, but he obliged anyways.
Gus walked up to the girl, tapping her on the shoulder and she immediately turned around. "Oh, there you are! I'm so glad you're okay, I did not mean to bump into you, I swear. I just had to ask you something, but I was nervous and for some reason my emotions control the way I fly so then my staff starting going at full speed and you know the rest haha."
"Oh, uh, it's fine I guess. What did you want to ask me though?" Gus was pretty confused, since they didn't even know each other. But Mattholomule, not standing as back as Gus had wanted him to, was pretty sure he knew what the question was, judging by the pink tint on the girls cheeks.
"Uh, well," she started, fidgeting with her hair. "Look, you don't know me but I thought we could get to know each other because you're like, super cool, and so I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me? Because you're like, really cute."
Oh. She was one of those people who thought it was cool to date someone the same age as them but more mature since Gus was two grades up. "I have a boyfriend," he simply stated.
"What? Who?"
"I'm right here," Matt said, walking up to Gus, who put an arm around his waist. "So fuck off."
"Matty." Gus whisper-hissed, but he was secretly sort of pleased. For some reason.
"H-him?" The girl sputtered in disbelief. "You're dating him?"
"Yeah, he is. Cry about it."
Gus, obviously not as mean spirited as his boyfriend, simply gave a small nod. But he did kiss Matt back when the older boy pressed his lips against Gus's, as if to prove they weren't making their relationship up or something.
They were still kissing when the girl picked up her staff and stomped away, only breaking apart when Willow placed a hand on each of their shoulders, saying, "Shes gone. You can stop now."
Gus rubbed at his forehead. "My head still hurts a bit. I don't feel like practicing anymore, but you guys can continue without me."
The rest of the team had trailed behind Willow, and Hunter furrowed his eyebrow. "You sure? We don't mind stopping."
"Nah, you guys carry on. We all know I'm better than you all anyways," he joked with that signature Gus smirk on his face.
"I'll get him home," Matt said, and he held Gus's hand as they walked away. The shorter boy whispered, "Are you taking me because you feel like being nice, or is it really because you want those cuddles I promised earlier?"
"Shut the fuck up." Mattholomule kicked Gus's ankle, not too hard in case there was still some pain there.
Willow watched the two walk away from the field, fingers still intertwined yet shoving each other at the same time. "They are not a normal couple," she , shaking her head affectionately.
"And you and Hunter are?" Viney scoffed, her girlfriend snickering in agreement.
"I never said that!"
