Chapter 1: Wake

Chapter Text

The first thing Ocean noticed when she woke up was the amount of pain she was in. The almost blinding, searing pain. Then she noticed how much of what she could see was stained with dark red blood. She wondered how much of it was her blood. Ocean tried to sit up, but pain prevented her. She used what little movement she did have to look around. A fire burned in a patchy ring around Ocean and five other bodies she recognized. They were the barely breathing and severely injured bodies of her choirmates.

Constance was the closest to Ocean. Ocean was scared by how injured Constance was. Sure, Constance had good reason to hate Ocean but Ocean still loved her, platonic or romantic was a conversation for when the pain wasn’t clouding her brain. Constance’s stomach had been impaled by the broken lap bar when the cart jolted forwards and was now openly bleeding heavily from a deep wound. Her arm was bent in the wrong direction, clearly broken or dislocated.

Beside Constance was the newest member of the choir, Penny Lamb. Her neck was clearly broken, the bone visible from breaking skin. Penny’s head was bleeding and so was her chest, where several deep wounds were visible.

On the left, were two boys, Mischa Bachinski and Noel Gruber. Noel seemed to have taken a hit for Mischa, his shoulder impaled by a sharp piece of wood and barely intact. Mischa was partially trapped under the remains of the cart. The part of Mischa that was visible had small cuts and wounds from the wood. Noel seemed to have been holding Mischa’s hand when they fell.

Ricky was the furthest away. He was seemingly the least injured, with only a few broken bones and wounds, although he was the most burned from the fire.

Ocean heard sirens approaching before she began to slip into unconsciousness again. All she could think about was if Constance was okay.
