Chapter Text
Ribbon’s New House
One morning in Ripple Star, 2 girls were packing their things in a suitcase. They were about to move to a new place. One of the girls, a fairy named Ribbon, was super excited as there was a special someone waiting for her there. The other, a human artist named Adeleine, felt more nervous. She had gotten used to living in Ripple Star and the sudden changes which were about to come seemed to be a bit overwhelming.
“Are you done yet?” an impatient Ribbon asked.
“Don’t rush me Ribbon,” her friend replied as she was packing. “An artist must be as careful to her artwork as a mother to her child.”
Ribbon wasn’t affected by her passionate words.
“Come on! We’re be there by midnight at this rate! I’m the one carrying all the load you know!” Ribbon pouted.
“Bah! You’re a fast flyer. We’ll be there in no time! You’re just excited to see your boyfriend, aren’t you?” Adeleine replied with a smirk.
That caused Ribbon’s face to turn bright red.
“For the last time, we are just friends!” Ribbon exclaimed in embarrassment.
“Oh reeeally?” Adeleine continued to tease with a cheeky grin.
At that point, Ribbon’s embarrassment was too much to handle. She desperately covered her blushing face with her hands while turning away.
“Just… tell me when you’re finished,” Ribbon muttered.
“Ok!” Adeleine said.
A few hours later in Planet Popstar, a certain round puffy ball of pink was fast asleep at his usual napping spot under his favorite apple tree. He was looking forward to seeing 2 of his friends moving to his home planet. Waiting however has taken quite a beating to him resulting in him finally giving in to take a long nap.
But then, he heard a little crash in front of him.
He was not fully awake yet so all he could perceive were muddled sounds.
“Land softer next time… My paintings…”
“You try landing… millions of miles away…”
Then, Kirby’s eyes sprung open as he recognized both of their voices. He ran to them with a big smile on his face.
“Poyo! Poyo!” he shouted excitedly.
“Kirby!” With no hesitation, Ribbon shoved Adeleine aside and ran to give him a big hug. “I’ve missed you so much!”
“Poyo, Poyo!” Kirby replied.
“Well, I’m alright… thank you for asking…” Adeleine muttered while still on the ground from the shove. But her expression quickly softened when she saw Kirby.
“Hi, Kirby!” she waved to him.
Kirby was so excited he started jumping up and down like crazy. It’s like there was an invisible trampoline under Kirby’s feet.
“Kirby,” Ribbon began. “We’ve decided to move here!”
“Poyo?”
“Yes, really,” Adeleine answered. I get to paint more landscapes here, Ribbon gets to flirt with you more, it’s a win- win!”
“Adeleine!!!” Ribbon snarled at her through her gritted teeth.
Luckily though, Kirby doesn’t seem to understand what the word ‘flirt’ means. He was just so happy to see his friends.
“Alright, I guess we should get started,” Adeleine said.
“Poyo?”
“Building our house,” Adeleine responded. “We can’t just sleep in the wild after all,” she joked.
“Poyo poyo!” Kirby waved his arm for the girls to follow them. He took them to see his little cottage.
“Uh… as much as I’d love to move in with you, I don’t think it’s big enough for all of us,” Ribbon concluded.
Kirby then appeared to be pondering hard at what to do. Suddenly, a light bulb emerged from his round head. He then sprinted off as fast as a cheetah, leaving the 2 girls in a trail of his dust. When he came back, he was carrying an entire bed with a certain lazy fat penguin sleeping on top of it.
“Wha… what?! Where am I?!” the king exclaimed.
“King Dedede?” Adeleine said. “Haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Oh… it’s you…” the king groggily uttered out as he went back to sleep, only for the pink puffball to start jumping up and down on him like a little child waking his father, much to the latter’s annoyance.”
“King Dedede!” Ribbon tried to shake him awake. “First of all, it’s noon so you shouldn’t still be sleeping. And second, I think you can help us.”
“Help? With what?” he asked grumpily.
“Well, you’re a king, right? And being a king involves managing land and building houses. So, you can help us find a place to build a new house!”
“Ugh, fine! As long as I can go back to sleep afterwards. Where do you want to live? And make it snappy, I haven’t got all day!”
Ribbon secretly wanted to build her house next to Kirby’s but she was not looking forward to getting teased every day during their stay here so she decided to just keep quiet.
Suddenly, under the hill, Adeleine saw a seaside. Instantly, she was attracted to the sea’s sparkling bright water and the golden sand. Plus, she had wanted to work more to improve her seascapes.”
“There!” she pointed at the spot.
“Alright. Waddle- dees, you heard her! Build them a house there. You six…” King Dedede pointed to a group of Waddle- Dees nearby. “Carry me back!”
King Dedede’s minions did as they were told. A few minutes later, the whole group was down by the seaside. Led by the famous Bandanna Waddle- Dee, the minions got to work at building the house.
They carried wood which they cut down from nearby coconut trees. Adeleine insisted on using that type of wood only as any other type would ‘spoil the composition’. The Waddle- dees used some of the logs to roll the rest of the wood on top so that they can be moved easier. Ribbon found some vines nearby and decided that they would be perfect to hold the walls together. Kirby meanwhile was munching on a coconut… uh I mean gathering palm leaves to use as the roof. Unfortunately, being a little guy (and being constantly distracted by coconuts), Kirby was only able to get 2 or 3 bunches at a time.
The rushing waves in the background helped everyone feel more relaxed at doing their job. Everyone worked joyfully under the golden sun and refreshing air. It only justifies Adeleine’s choice of the location of their house.
After all the wood was assembled, Adeleine stepped up to paint the walls. She was visibly annoyed when she saw Ribbon doodled some pinkl hearts and flowers on the wall. After a short argument, Adeleine was left to paint the walls with warm tropical colors while a grumpy fairy sat alone near the seaside with a pout on her face and her arms crossed.
Finally, they were done. Their house (or hut) looked much more beautiful than they all hoped it would be. They even added a little boardwalk around the house, a window and 2 hammocks (one that’s much smaller on top of the other). Even Ribbon’s mood started to lift when she saw the house.
“I can’t believe we’re about to live here!” Ribbon exclaimed.
“I know right! I knew this was the perfect place!” Adeleine responded.
Kirby and Bandana Waddle- dee even gave a surprise housewarming by offering apples and coconuts on top of a picnic blanket. Everyone there all happily ate their fill together.
Soon, it was getting dark. Ribbon had already turned in for the night as she was exhausted. Most of the Waddle- Dees have gone home. Kirby waved good- bye to Adeleine as he made his way back to his house. Adeleine decided to stay for a bit longer, just to enjoy the fresh sea breeze and the relaxing sound of roaring waves as she was slurping her coconut.
She then remembered her paintings. Because of her impatient friend, her oil paintings weren’t able to be left to dry completely. Luckily, she put a protective coating on each canvas so that the paint didn’t smear. She now took them out onto her easels outside to be left to dry. Finally, she decided to hit the hay as well. She changed into her pajamas and crawled onto her hammock under Ribbon’s inside their new hut. She wanted to read a book before sleeping so she took out a flashlight and a new book she just bought: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. As she was sleeping right beside a window, she could feel the refreshing air as she read the book.
“Chapter 1…” she began. “*Yawns* I’ll read the rest tomorrow,” she decided as she put her book away, turned off her flashlight and drifted to dreamland.
The roaring waves also helped with her sleeping. As loud as they are, it’s strange how we can find such sounds so relaxing. This is certainly the case for both girls. They were sleeping really well even though the waves appeared to get louder and louder.
But there was a reason the waves were getting louder. Unfortunately, as good of an artist Adeleine was, she would not make the best house- builder as the hut was built very close to the shoreline. And it just so happened that this night offers a high- tide. The Waddle-dees unfortunately, didn’t build any foundations connecting the house to the ground, leaving nothing to stop the waves from carrying the wooden hut and the 2 girls away from shore into the sea.
As if life had a very cruel sense of humor, Adeleine was dreaming of floating away on a boat as a ship’s captain. She sought to explore every unknown island she could find. As much as she enjoyed that dream, reality often paints a different picture regarding similar topics.
Hours passed. The hut was now miles away from shore. And yet, the oblivious sleeping beauties stayed as relaxed and still as ever.
That is until finally, a giant boulder under the sea bumped into the floor of the hut, waking Adeleine up.
“H-Huh? Morning already?” she spoke groggily.
She looked through the window to see the wide blue sea outside. Nothing new. She grabbed her blanket and went back to sleep.
But then she realized something: she was never sleeping in her dream of being a captain. Not to mention she wasn’t wearing her night clothes either.
She was awake.
Realizing this, her eyes sprung open as she quickly rushed outside the door to see their house completely surrounded by endless water in all directions. When she realized what was happening, she didn’t even scream: she was too shocked to do so. Instead, her jaw hung open as she slowly and shakily backed up into the house to wake her friend.
“Uhh… R-Ribbon?” she stuttered as she tried to shake her friend awake.
“*Snort* No Kirby, I love you more! Hee- hee!” Ribbon talked in her sleep with a smile.
Adeleine’s head hung low. Fairies are known to be heavy- sleepers. They were adapted this way due to their size. The constant rumbling of giants would keep anyone else awake so fairies were evolved this way to be sure to get enough sleep every night. Not to mention Ribbon had quite an exhausting day today.
“Ok,” Adeleine said to herself. “Don’t panic… That’s the first step. It’s not that bad… We’re just stranded in the ocean for miles… heh- heh… with no land in sight… all alone with a fairy who won’t wake up…”
Normally, reassessing the situation should make a person feel better. This however, did the opposite.
Then she suddenly got an idea.
“My paints! I can make a motor- boat and… oh…” she realized she left all her canvases on the shore.
“Right… Plan B…” she pondered.
A few seconds later…
“RIBBON!!! WAKE UP!!!” she yelled at her tiny friend.
“Oh… Kirby…. You shouldn’t have!” the sleeping fairy uttered out.
Desperate, Adeleine grabbed Ribbon’s whole body and shook her up and down rapidly. Luckily, even fairies have their limits for sleeping. Ribbon finally woke up, only to be subjected by a sickening feeling which made her almost throw up.
“Adeleine!” she moaned. “What time do you call this!” She wiggled herself out of Adeleine’s hands back to the bed. “I think you drank too much coconut!”
“Ribbon,” Adeleine began. “Look outside…”
“Whatever it is, you can tell me in the morning.” She covered her head with her pillow. “Good night!”
And in no time at all, she was asleep again.
Finally, Adeleine gave up on trying to escape. She stepped outside.
“Well, since I’m here I might as well make the most of it,” She hoped to at least get a good view of the sparkling ocean. She always loved just sitting down and looking at her surroundings. It always made her feel relaxed, sometimes even at a critical situation like this. She sat down on the boardwalk with her tiny hanging legs waving back and forth.
But she then noticed that there were no ripples from the water in front of her. Suspicious, she leaned her head forwards to get a closer look. She then heard a roaring sound that seemed to be getting louder.
Then her eyes widened as she finally realized…
She instantly began to panic, despite her initial intention not to do so. She grabbed the nearest thing she could find (her beret) and started using it to paddle away rapidly like a crazy person. Of course, that did next to nothing. She ran back inside to shake her friend up again.
“Adeleine! It’s late! Go to sleep!” Ribbon moaned.
“We’re be sleeping with the fishes soon if you don’t get up!”
That caught her attention. She got up and went with Adeleine outside to see their impending doom.
Instantly, Ribbon’s eyes also dilated.
“What? Oh my gosh! How did we end up over a waterfall?! Om my gosh! What to do?! What to do?!” At that point, Ribbon started blabbering a million words per hour.
“I’m not ready for this! I didn’t eat at that famous ice- cream shop yet! I was supposed to get a chocolate cake for my next birthday! I didn’t finish that picture with Adeleine! I never told Kirby…”
But her blabbering was instantly interrupted by a slap to her face. That got her back.
“Thanks Adeleine,” she said while rubbing her bruised cheek. “I needed that.”
“No problem!” Adeleine said with a smile. “Now would you please be so kind as to FLY US BACK SO I WON’T HAVE TO SPEND THE REST OF THE NIGHT IN A CASKET!!”
Normally, Adeleine was a very shy girl. But after all these stressful events, she finally snapped.
At that point, their house was dangling on the edge of the waterfall. They could literally see the giant cloud of rushing water at the bottom.
“Wait, I left my Kirby plush…!”
“There’s no time! Just fly you silly fairy!”
Ribbon did exactly as told. They flew away as they watched helplessly at their new house falling down into the abyss below. They flew back to shore.
Unfortunately, however, Ribbon was still pretty tired so after they were able to get a decent distance away from the waterfall, she fell asleep again, causing the both of them to fall into the ocean. Even that didn’t wake Ribbon. Now all wet and tired, Adeleine grudgingly swam the rest of the way back with Ribbon on her back. It was lucky that she was a good swimmer but that didn’t stop her from getting lost.
By the time she found her way back, it was morning. The beautiful sun was rising behind her but even she was not in the mood to appreciate that anymore. At that moment, Kirby just so happened to drop by and visit. Seeing both of his friends wet in their pajamas in the sea with their house gone gave him a lot of questions.
“Poyo?”
“Don’t even ask…” she scowled as she stormed away in anger, leaving a soaked Ribbon, who was still sleeping, right next to Kirby.
