Work Text:
Well, it wasn't exactly the way Luz had planned to spend her Christmas, but it wasn't entirely unwelcome. Thinking the snowstorm was going to hit much later than it actually did, Amity had left the portal back in the old shack with the intention of staying at the Blight Manor for their Christmas Eve night. The shack they'd renovated for visits from their friends on the Isles. However, they were currently and effectively snowed in from the short walk it would normally take to get there. They were in the middle of a visit from Amity when they'd noticed the several feet of snow outside.
Normally, King and Eda would be there too, but the former and the Collector were like brothers these days; practically inseparable. It was King's turn to spend Christmas with him, so he was back on the Isles spending his time with the Collector, Hooty, Lilith and Eda. The latter two of which had stayed in the Isles mostly to keep an eye on the kids.
Amity was almost always in the human realm with Luz these days, having chosen not to take a career down the path of government. Instead, she chose a more relaxed job that she could do at a distance. This way, she could spend more time with Luz. Though, she had also been spending a lot of time with her dad and siblings since the end of the fighting with Belos.
It had been five years since their final fight with Belos; the Collector had easily sided with them despite all of the things Belos promised he'd do. It had been far too late to earn their trust back, though, and they put a quick end to the tyrant, who was currently locked up and rotting in the deepest level of the Conformatorium. No one really knew when he'd die, but it would definitely be in prison if they had anything to say about it.
At nineteen, Luz was happily still in a relationship with Amity, and currently snuggled up with her in their shared room in the basement. Luz decided a while back that Vee could have the bedroom upstairs while she and Amity took the basement. After all, as their relationship progressed, more adult things started to happen, and it was better not to disturb the others late at night.
"Are you sure you want to be in bed this early?" Amity asked after a few minutes of content quietness.
"Mami likes to have everyone up early for Christmas, remember?" Luz chuckled. "I'd rather not be hellishly tired for present time."
"I suppose that's fair," Amity giggled. "I can't wait to give you your gift."
"And I can't wait to give you yours, hermosa," Luz replied with a smile, kissing her on the nose.
Amity swiftly and gently shifted so that their lips pressed together, and Luz easily melted into it, wrapping her arms around her girlfriend and holding her close. She felt Amity's arms snake their way around the back of her neck as they shared the gentle kiss.
The broke apart after a minute, resting their foreheads against one another as they looked into each other's eyes. Luz could get lost in them for hours if given the chance. She always loved the amber color of them.
"Titan, I'd love to do more than just kiss you," Luz breathed out. "Too bad Eda and Hunter have to take up the living room."
"I thought you said you didn't want to be tired for presents in the morning?" Amity smirked.
"Oh, hush," Luz chuckled. "That's a kind of tired I can deal with."
"You're so cheesy," Amity snorted.
"And the best at it," Luz gloated.
"I love you," Amity smiled.
"I love you too, mi amor," Luz smiled in return. "Let's get some sleep. Tomorrow's a big day."
The last thing Luz was expecting to wake up to was her girlfriend shooting up out of bed and rushing to the bathroom. The second she heard Amity throwing up, she was up out of bed and unaware of how exactly she'd gotten to the abomination witch's side. All she knew was that she needed to be at Amity's side.
She gently held her girlfriend's hair back with one hand, rubbing her back softly with the other. Luz didn't know why Amity was puking, but she was going to be there for her regardless. And after the abomination witch was done, she leaned back into Luz, who held her close and ran her fingers through the shorter girl's hair.
"You okay, Ams?" She asked softly.
"Y-yeah," Amity replied, still catching her breath a little.
"You were fine last night, what happened?" Luz asked curiously.
"I think my stomach just didn't agree with dinner," Amity answered. "I'm feeling fine now."
"Thank goodness," Luz sighed in relief. "You had me worried."
"Sorry, love," Amity managed to giggle.
"You don't have to apologize for your bodily functions," Luz chuckled.
"Is everything okay down here, mija?" Luz heard her mom call from the top of the basement stairs. "We heard quite the commotion."
"We're alright, mom!" Luz called back, then focused back on Amity. "I'll go make you some toast, okay? Take some time and rinse the nasty taste out of your mouth."
"Thank you, Luz," Amity smiled up at her.
"Anything for you, hermosa," Luz smiled back.
From there, Luz carefully got up, then helped Amity to her feet. Her girlfriend's legs were still a little shaky, so she made sure the shorter girl had her balance in order before letting go of her. After being given the okay, Luz made her way upstairs and into the kitchen, where her mom gave her a worried look.
"Are you sure everything is okay? It sounded the bathroom door down there got slammed," she said to Luz.
"Dinner didn't agree with Amity last night," Luz explained. "She's feeling fine now."
"Oh, okay, is she sure she doesn't want to rest a little more? We can put present opening off for a bit."
"She'll be alright, I promise," Luz assured her mom. "I will keep an eye on her, though."
"Alright, I trust you," she replied.
Luz gave a nod and grabbed the loaf of bread from on top of the fridge. She unwrapped the package and grabbed a couple of slices out of the bag before twisting the opening back up and putting the loaf back where she got it. She walked over to the toaster and made sure the settings were on what Amity preferred before tossing the two slices into the slots and pressing the slider down so that it would start toasting the bread.
"Hey, Luz, I heard the commotion downstairs," she heard Vee's voice as the basilisk came into the kitchen. "Is everything okay?"
"Morning, Vee," Luz turned to face her with a smile. "Amity's stomach just didn't agree with dinner, that's all."
"Is she gonna be okay to do presents and stuff?" Vee asked.
"Yeah, she said she feels fine now," Luz nodded.
"I promise I'm alright, Vee," Amity walked into behind Eda, making her way over to Luz.
Luz was quick to wrap her arms around Amity gently and pull her close, resting her forehead on her girlfriend's. Amity just as swiftly returned the gesture, moving to have her face buried in the crook of Luz's neck. Luz let out a chuckle.
"Still waking up, hermosa?" Luz asked her.
"Mhm," Amity nodded.
"You guys make me wish Masha was here," Vee commented.
"We'll go with you after presents to go see her," Luz offered.
"That would be amazing!" Vee said excitedly.
"Then it's settled," Luz replied.
Luz heard the toast pop up from the toaster and gently pulled away from Amity, who pouted at the lack of contact. She gave her girlfriend a quick kiss and a promise to cuddle on the couch after breakfast before turning around and grabbing a plate from one of the hanging cupboards on the wall. Once she'd gently set it down on the counter, she quickly pulled the toasted bread from the toaster and tossed it onto the plate. She turned back around walked over to where Amity had chosen to sit down, setting it in front of her.
"Think you might be able to stomach a cinnamon roll, Amity?" Luz's mom asked. "There's quite a few here."
"I'll start with one, thank you, Camila," Amity replied with a smile.
"Toast first, okay, hermosa?" Luz requested. "I don't want you to get sick again."
"I promise I'll make sure the toast stays down first, love," Amity answered.
Luz nodded, satisfied with Amity's response as her mom set the pan of cinnamon rolls down on the table. Then, plates were passed out to those who didn't have one already. Luz grabbed one of the rolls for Amity first, making sure it didn't fall off the spatula before serving herself a couple of them, passing the utensil to Vee.
As promised, Amity ate her toast first, waiting a minute to make sure it would stay down. And when it did, she moved onto her cinnamon roll, one of her favorite things she'd tried in the human realm. She asked for them often, liking the human realm's version better than the Boiling Isles' version.
"These are always so good," Vee said between bites. "I don't think I'll ever get tired of them."
"You do when you start eating too much and make your stomach upset," Luz chuckled. "Learned that one the hard way."
"You got sick of these? Of all people?" Amity asked.
"For a bit when I was little," Luz replied.
"She was bedridden with a sick stomach for three days," her mom explained.
"Three days??" Amity and Vee asked in unison.
"Like I said, I learned my lesson," Luz replied, her cheeks feeling a little warm. "Don't eat fifteen of them in one sitting at the age of five."
"Wow, and here I thought King was bad back in the day," Amity said in awe.
"He was eight and had a better grasp," Luz responded. "I was five, just barely out of toddlerhood."
"I suppose that's fair, but what I wanna know is how you managed that under Camila's watchful eye," Vee wondered aloud.
"Very carefully," Luz replied vaguely.
"I still think it was her uncle spoiling her," her mom chimed in.
"The world may never know," Luz responded.
At this point, everyone seemed to be done eating. Fast, but they were all excited for their presents. That was on their minds more than food was. They could always eat more afterward. Plates were abandoned on the table to clean later as they made their way to the living room.
Luz and Amity quickly took up the space on the couch, the former not forgetting her promise for cuddles prior to breakfast. She sat with her legs spread out across the cushions, one ending up hanging off the couch as Amity sat down between them, leaning back into Luz. The taller girl wrapped her arms around her girlfriend as Vee sat in front of the couch while her mom started to grab presents from under the tree.
"We'll start with the little ones," she stated. "It's always more fun to build the tension for the bigger presents."
"Agreed!" Luz happily replied.
Mostly because she had a big gift of her own to give to Amity, and the longer she waited, the more exciting it became. But also nerve-racking at the same time, so it gave her more time to mentally prepare to gift it to her girlfriend.
A lot of the presents were for Luz's mom; gifts from Luz's Isles family. It was a whole assortment of things ranging from clothes to smaller things like jewelry. There were even some Boiling Isles snacks she'd had yet to try that Luz had been able to digest.
Vee had gotten some things related to her latest hyper fixation, things that she was very excited to have. Especially the cosplay she intended to wear to the next convention she wanted to go to. Luz had been a heavy influence.
Luz and Amity had mostly gotten clothes, as both worked jobs and were able to afford all the things they wanted and needed. Not much had been on their lists to everyone. But this meant that now it was time for the big gifts. Which was Luz and Amity to one another.
"Why don't you go first, hermosa?" Luz suggested.
"Are you sure?" Amity asked.
"Yeah, you're kinda sitting on me anyway," Luz chuckled.
"Alright," Amity giggled.
The abomination witch carefully got up from where she'd been sitting with Luz and walked over to the tree, where there was a single gift bag left under the tree. Amity grabbed it and brought it back over to Luz, who happily accepted the present from her girlfriend. She wondered what was so big about this present. A new cosplay, maybe?
"There's a card you should read first," Amity said to her.
"Okay," Luz nodded.
She reached into the bag, her hand quickly finding the paper envelope and pulling it out. She carefully opened the envelope and pulled the card out of it. It was definitely from the Isles, as it was decorated with abominations in Christmas hats. The hats were something Amity had probably added herself. Luz set the envelope aside and opened up the card, reading it out loud so that her mom and Vee weren't left in the dark.
"There comes a time in life where you feel like you need a little extra something. Sometimes that something is closer within reach than you might think. Merry Christmas, Luz, I love you," Luz read the card, a little confused. "That was cryptic, but I still loved it."
"Just open the present," Amity smiled and rolled her eyes.
"I'm getting there, amor," Luz chuckled.
Luz set the card aside and reached into the bag, starting to pull stuff out of it. The first thing she'd felt was more paper, so she pulled that out. It was a small manilla envelope that Luz was honestly confused about. But regardless, she opened it up and pulled out a grainy, black-and-white picture that she couldn't really make out the shapes in. She heard a gasp from her mom, who seemed to have realized what it was.
"What is this, Ams?" Luz asked, raising a brow.
"Keep pulling stuff out, it'll click soon," Amity replied vaguely.
"Alright, I trust you."
Luz tucked the picture back into the envelope and set it with her card before reaching back into the bag. She started to pull out what were really small articles of clothing. Hats, a tiny pair of shoes, some tiny onsies and...a pacifier. That was when it clicked for Luz, her eyes going wide as she looked up to Amity, who was looking away bashfully.
"Amity, you're pregnant?" Luz asked. "We're having a baby?"
"Mhm," Amity was clearly nervous.
Luz leapt up from the couch, baby clothes falling to the floor as she lifted Amity up and twirled her around. The shorter girl initially squeaked in surprise, but fell into a fit of giggles at Luz's excitement. After a few seconds, Luz set Amity back down, but didn't let go, instead placing a loving kiss on her lips. A gesture that Amity happily reciprocated.
"Titan, I can't believe this is really happening," Luz said after they broke the kiss.
"Congrats you two!" Vee cheered from behind them.
"Oh, you two are growing up so fast!" Her mom added in, tears in her eyes.
"Wait, so this morning, that was...?" Luz asked.
"Morning sickness," Amity replied with a smile. "Sorry I made you worry."
"No, no, don't apologize," Luz shook her head. "This was a very welcome surprise."
"I'm glad."
"Now it's my turn to give you your present," Luz stated, looking to her mom. "Mami, can you grab it for me?"
"Sure, mija," she replied. "I'll be right back."
As her mom left the room to grab the gift, Amity buried her face in the crook of Luz's neck. Luz raised a hand up to run it through her hair, the shorter girl humming contently. Vee had grabbed the manilla envelope and brought it over, handing it to Luz.
"I think this was supposed to be the ultrasound," Vee stated. "Is that right, Amity?"
"Yeah, it is," Amity nodded.
Luz was quick to open the envelope, but careful not to damage the picture now that she knew what it was. Not that she would have damaged it in the first place; it was from Amity, after all. With Amity still clinging to her, Luz took a better look at the ultrasound, able to make out the shapes this time. She rubbed her thumb gently over where their head was in the picture, a smile on her face.
"This is incredible," Luz said just over a whisper. "You've got a little life growing inside you."
"I'm so happy for you two," Vee smiled at them.
"Thanks, Vee," Luz replied.
Just then, Luz's mom re-entered the room, small velvet box in her hand. Her mom and Vee already knew what this gift was, Luz had planned it weeks ago. Luz handed the ultrasound to Vee so that she and her mom could look, too. It was quickly replaced with the velvet box. Using her free hand, she tapped under Amity's chin to get her attention. The abomination witch lifted her head to look Luz in the eyes, a curious look in her own.
"I want you to close your eyes for a minute," Luz said softly.
"You're putting quite a lot of effort into this," Amity giggled.
"It'll be worth it, I promise, mi amor," Luz replied, kissing the tip of her nose. "Now, close your eyes."
"Okay, okay," Amity smiled and did as she was told.
Luz pulled away from their embrace, careful not to let the box touch Amity, not wanting her to figure it out early. Her thumb rubbed over the box before she opened it. Inside was a custom-made engagement ring that Luz had worked her ass off to be able to afford. It was a rose-gold ring, the topper in silver shaped like an abomination. Its eyes were made of emeralds.
Using her free hand, Luz grabbed one of Amity's and took a deep breath. It was now or never.
"Amity, do you remember at Hexside, closer to when we first met, when you got scared to ask me to Grom?" Luz asked.
"Titan, that was embarrassing. But I still got to go with you anyway," Amity replied.
"Yeah, and then later on, I couldn't express how I felt about you and Hooty put us through that tunnel of love thing?" Luz went on.
"Your communication could've used some work, but I'm one to talk since I couldn't ask you to Grom," Amity giggled.
"Well, I've got something to ask you now, and this time, I can ask with confidence," Luz replied.
She shifted to be down on one knee, holding the box up properly so that Amity could see the ring. Luz made sure she was looking up at Amity, smiled on her face. She rubbed the back of Amity's hand and took another breath.
"Go ahead and open your eyes, hermosa," Luz said softly.
"Luz, what are-" Amity had started to say as she opened her eyes, but cut herself off with a gasp.
"Amity Blight, will you marry me?" Luz finally asked.
There was a deafening pause as Amity's eyes glistened before welling up with tears that quickly found themselves rolling down her cheeks. At first, she could only nod, and Luz carefully took the ring from the box, slipping it onto the proper finger on Amity's left hand. It was only then that Amity found her words as she tackled Luz to the floor.
"Yes!" She squealed happily. "Of course I'll marry you!"
Luz chuckled at her excitement, but had tears of her own welling up in her eyes as her back hit the floor. She held Amity there for a minute, her now-fiance's face buried in her neck once again. When Amity finally pulled away a little, she quickly closed the distance by placing a happy and loving kiss to Luz's lips. Luz happily reciprocated.
"I love you so much," Amity said through happy sobs after breaking the kiss.
"I love you too, so, so much," Luz replied with the biggest grin on her face.
Now engaged and expecting a baby, this was only just the beginning of the rest of their lives.
