Summary
The small town of Gavaldon was isolated, alone in a dark forest, and cursed every four years to lose two children to a school they did not know the location of.
One Good, and one Evil.
Children devoured storybooks, searching for the faces of those they'd known and worried about what might happen if they were chosen next.
The town as a whole was quite sure that the child for Evil was Agatha, who lived in the cemetery with the witch. The child for good was one of two, either Sophie, with her impeccable looks and whimsical desire to escape their homely town, or Belle, the Miller's daughter, known to all as soft and good and beautiful.
Yet when the morning rose, Agatha was still there, found in Sophie's empty bedroom, watery-eyed and distressed, with no sign of her best friend. Across their small town, Belle's mother cried, clinging to her daughter's pillow, wondering what she could have done to save her daughter.
