Smartest girl in Hawkins

Summary:

She had recently found a job opening at a newspaper a few towns over. For any other job, she wouldn't have been this nervous, but this specific paper was completely run by women, and Nancy had fallen in love the moment she had researched more about them.

Or: Nancy is nervous as she waits for a call about a job, Robin is there for her.

Work Text:

Nancy paced the hallway outside her bedroom, hyper aware of the silence that surrounded her as she waited for the phone to ring.

"Come on, Nance. The phone's not going to ring any faster if you wear a hole through the floor. Come sit down for a little." Robin spoke up from inside Nancy's bedroom, where she had been splayed out on her bed, watching Nancy's anxious energy grow.

The sound of her girlfriend's voice snapped Nancy out of her zoned-out state, the girl's head turning to look at Robin where she lay basically upside down, head dangling off the bed.

Nancy let out a deep sigh, heading back into her room and taking a seat opposite Robin as she sat up to face her, gently taking Nancy's hands into her own.

"Hey, it's gonna be okay, they'd be total fools not to hire you. I mean, Nancy Wheeler, smartest girl in Hawkins, on track to graduate high school with straight As and the highest GPA anyone has ever seen in the history of, like, ever. Absolutely their own loss, I'm telling you." Robin grinned, "But, we don't have to worry about that because you're going to get this job, I just know it." She leant forward and pressed a quick kiss to the corner of Nancy's mouth, watching as a small smile spread over her face at the gesture.

"Thanks, Birdie." Robin rolled her eyes fondly at the nickname. "I don't know though, I know the interview went well but there was so many people there! So many women who looked smarter, more put together, better than me. I just don't know."

She had recently found a job opening at a newspaper a few towns over. For any other job, she wouldn't have been this nervous, but this specific paper was completely run by women, and Nancy had fallen in love the moment she had researched more about them. She immediately called up and applied for the job, receiving an interview date that she was equally excited and terrified for. She drove over with Robin in the passenger seat, and came out of the interview with shaking hands but a smile on her face.

They said they'd call within the week.

It was currently day 5 and Nancy had still yet to hear back from them, and she was beginning to lose hope. Robin wasn't having any of it. To her, Nancy Wheeler was the most perfect girl to ever exist, and if she had to go into that stupid office and prove it to them, she most definitely would. But right now, her main focus was keeping Nancy's spirits up.

"Well, I do. I know that you're gonna get this, Nance. You deserve this job and so much more. You are incredible and I really wish you would believe that sometimes." Robin lifted a hand to rest it on Nancy's cheek, making eye contact that she knew Nancy craved when she was being vulnerable with someone. It was weird, Robin thought, how things like this that usually made her want to crawl out of her own skin, came so easily to her when she was with Nancy, casual touches and eye contact and even skin-to-skin contact. It all felt okay, normal, when it was Nancy.

"Hello in there," Nancy giggled as she knocked lightly at Robin's temple. "Where did you go?"

"Just thinking about you."

"Oh yeah? What about me?"

"Oh no, I don't kiss and tell, Wheeler." Robin smirked as she leant back onto the bed once more, pulling Nancy down with her so that the shorter girl was laying with her head on Robin's chest.

"You suck, Buckley" Nancy rolled her eyes at her girlfriends antics, but curled into her anyway. The warmth that Robin always seemed to radiate was Nancy's favourite thing, and she missed it every time they were apart. She hated to be needy, but there was something about Robin that made her let her guard down so very easily. Nancy was grateful for it, she had never had a relationship like this, where she felt so wholly relaxed and comfortable all of the time. Sure, Steve and Jonathan were good, great even, but neither of them understood her quite like Robin did.

Sometimes she swore they could read each other's minds. Though if she thought about it, maybe Robin could just read everyone's minds. The girl just seemed to have this incredible connection with every single member of their little group. Robin always knew when someone was upset, or scared, or having a bad day, or even if they just needed a friend. She was always there no matter what, despite her own feelings and her own comfort, she put each member of the party before herself. It made Nancy fall in love a little bit more every time she noticed it.

She was suddenly aware of herself again when the harsh sound of the phone ringing snapped her back to reality. Nancy shot up, apologising as she almost pushed Robin off the bed in her haste to get to the phone. She heard Robin's laughter from behind her as she ran.

"Hello, you've reached the Wheeler residence this is Nancy speaking." She was a little out of breath and she prayed it wasn't noticeable.

"Ah yes, just the person we were looking for. This is Doreen calling from The Crown Point Star. We wanted to thank you for your application, and for coming in to attend your interview. We were extremely impressed with your skills and your eagerness to learn and take on responsibility." Nancy's heart-rate skyrocketed at the words, hands tangling in the phone cord to try to stop their shaking.

"Thank you." She said breathlessly.

"And if you are still willing, we would love to offer you a place here with us." Nancy swore she could have passed out in that moment, heart bursting with pride and excitement.

"Really? Oh thank you! I would be honoured to take the job, when do I start?" Nancy's grin widened even more at the sound of Robin's poorly held back excitement from behind her.

"Are you available on Monday, dear? 9am at the same place you came to for the interview." Doreen spoke evenly, but Nancy could hear the smile in the other woman's voice too.

"I am! That sounds perfect, I look forward to working with you!"

"You too, dear, see you on Monday."

They said their goodbye's and Nancy hung the phone back up at the wall, slowly turning round to face Robin where she stood at the bedroom door.

"I did it! I got the job!" The two crashed into each others arms, laughing and jumping in their giddy excitement.

"I knew you would Nance! What did I say, huh? Smartest girl in Hawkins, they'd be fools to pass you up. I guess they saw exactly what I did in you." The smile never left Robin's face as she pulled Nancy in for a crushing hug.

They stayed together, basking in the glow of their happiness until they heard the front door open and they had to pull away from each other.

Nancy led them back into her room, closing the door behind them.

"Don't you wanna tell your mom?" Robin looked at her curiously.

"My mom can wait." She closed the gap between them and held Robin close as they kissed, letting their bodies do the talking, telling each other how much they loved the other, and how proud they were of each other.
