Work Text:
“Hi Purpled!” Tommy beamed at his best friend. The two blonde boys were now in third grade and loving it. Well Tommy was loving it, Purpled hated third grade. Probably because he and Tommy weren’t in the same homeroom. Purpled has complained, A LOT, to his older brother Punz about this misfortune. His other half was upset when they discovered they were not in the same homeroom, but Tommy was fine with it when he learned they would see each other during recess.
“Hi misio.” Purpled smiled back. Tommy tilted his head and scrunched up his face at what Purpled called him. “What’s that mean?”
The purple clothed boy only smirked at his other half and said nothing. “Tell me!”
Still he said nothing.
“Tell me Purp!.. This is treason!”
Finally he broke and laughed. “Treason to who exactly?”
“The queen of course.”
“Alright weirdo it means teddy bear. Punz started teaching me polish.”
“Oh that’s so cool – wait. Why am I a teddy bear!”
Purpled shrugged, “You’re cuddly like one and soft like one. You’re very sweet. Like honey!” Tommy blushed and scowled at his best friend. “I’ll show you soft.” Tommy tackled him and they rolled around on the grass until one of the lunch aids told them off for it. He layed like a lump on a log on Purpled and sighed when he started playing with his hair. The other kids around them were used to their antics and were never phased by them. Tommy still missed his dad when he was at school but he always gets embarrassed when his family tells him his first day of kindergarten. But it was easier, much easier, when he goes to school now because of Purpled. His best friend always gets his mind off of his dad and it helps even if he doesn’t know it.
“I’m not coming to school tomorrow.”
Tommy shot up and looked at him alarmed. “What! Why not?”
Purpled shoved him back down and explained, “My aunt is getting married and we have to go. Punz even took off from work for it.”
“Woah really.”
Purpled nodded and went back to playing with hair. Purpled wasn’t happy about not seeing Tommy the following day. Tommy was his first friend and well only friend. He didn’t need anyone else other than Tommy. They’ve been stuck by the hip since the first day of kindergarten.
“You’ll be back after that right?”
“Yeah misio I will.”
“Good.”
And that was the end of that.
---
Purpled sat next to his brother in a stuffy suit. He hated the suit right away when Punz got it out for him. It was horrible. Ugly. Not even his favorite color. Worst of all.. He had to make his hair look all nice. The atrocity. Punz was fixing his tie for the tenth time that day because he kept messing with it. What can he say it was choking him! “Come on Purp just one more hour.”
“One hour too long.”
Punz laughed at him and shook his head. His brother was wearing a suit too but it looked like it wasn’t even bothering him. At all.
“Why do people even get married?” Punz shrugged and glanced down at his younger brother. “Well when people love each other very much they get married.”
“Why.”
“Cause they love each other and want to be with each other.”
Purpled had an idea. “Can friends get married?”
Punz nodded, “Yeah they can. You don’t have to be romantically in love with someone to marry them. Love is love. It’s not always romantic Purp. It can be platonic too.”
Perfect. Purpled knew what he was doing tomorrow when he would see Tommy during recess.
“Let’s practice your polish while we wait for this to start.” Purpled groaned and slumped against the table.
---
“Purpled!” Tommy yelled and ran at his best friend. It was boring without him. He had no one to play with or talk to yesterday. Well he did meet two boys named Tubbo and Ranboo but they weren’t Purpled.
“Hi misio.”
They hugged and sat next to each other under their tree and Tommy listened as Purpled told him all about the wedding and how much he hated the suit he wore. Weddings sounded boring. He hoped he never had to go to a wedding. He was knocked out of his thoughts when a ring pop was thrusted into his face. He looked at the red ring pop and then at his best friend. Tommy was confused.
“Will you marry me misio?”
“WHAT?” Tommy yelled. “Friends can get married too. Punz told me all about it. He told me that you can love someone romantically or platonically. I love you because you are my best friend. You’re my first friend and you’re special to me. So will you marry me?”
Tommy was baffled. Was that the right word to use? His dad has been teaching him words lately for some odd reason. “That better be watermelon or my answer is no.”
Purpled looked at him like he was stupid.
“Of course it's watermelon. I would never buy the wrong one for you. Who do you think I am? A monster?”
“What are you waiting for? Put it on my finger.”
Purpled rolled his eyes and put the ring pop on his finger. “So demanding.”
“That’s a big word for elmo.” Purpled stopped and looked at him. “Are you serious?”
“What? Techno fell asleep while watching Sesame Street cause he’s weird… Don’t look at me like that!”
“Whatever. Did you get a ring for yourself?”
“Of course I did.”
Tommy smiled at him and thought for a second. “What now?”
“We have to have a thing. I forgot the word for it.”
Tommy thought and smiled when he thought the word Purpled was looking for. “Ceremony!”
Purpled nodded shocked that his friend knew. “How’d you figure that out?”
“My dad has been on this learning new words and their meaning kick. I stopped questioning it after he attempted to teach me math when he sucks at math.”
Tommy shrugged at him and played with his ring pop. “I know someone who can do the ceremony.” Purpled looked at him with confusion but trusted him.
“Who?”
“Tubbo and Ranboo. I think Tubbo is in your homeroom and Ranboo is in mine. I talked with them yesterday when you were gone.”
“Okay, go ask them.”
Tommy shot up from his seat and yelled okay as he ran towards where the other two boys were at. Purpled watched Tommy ask them and show them his ring. Tubbo looked in his direction and glared at him for a second but softened when looking back at Tommy. Hm. Purpled tilted his head and stared at Tubbo, giving him the middle finger when Tubbo looked at him again.
Tommy was his motherfucker. Back off.
Speaking of the devil Tommy ran ahead of the two boys and jumped in front of Purpled. “They said yes,” Tommy looked behind him and back at Purpled, ”though Tubbo wants to be my best man, whatever that means.”
Purpled shrugged, “Alright.”
Ranboo stood in front of their tree with Purpled on one side and Tommy on the other holding freshly picked flowers Tubbo got him, and Tubbo standing next to him glaring at Purpled.
Ranboo looked nervously at them both, “I don’t really know how this is supposed to go.” Tommy smiled gently at his nervous friend. “Just ask, do you take so and so as your husband and we will say I do. Okay?” Ranboo nodded at Tommy and looked at Purpled.
“Purpled, do you take, um Tommy do I say your actual name?”
Tommy shrugged,” Sure big man.”
“Okay,” Ranboo started again, “Purpled, do you take Thomas to be your husband?”
“I do.”
“Thomas, do you take Purpled to be your husband?”
“I do!”
“Then you may hug your husband, friend?”
Tommy waved at him, “Don’t worry about it big man.”
Tommy and Purpled hugged and their wedding was over. “That was short.”
Tommy agreed with Tubbo but he didn’t mind.
They all hung out under the tree and Tommy licked at his ring pop. They talked until it was time to go back inside, back to class.
---
Tommy stepped out of his grandma’s car and ran inside leaving behind a laughing Kristin. Wilbur was waiting for him in the kitchen with a snack and lemonade, a big smile on his face when he saw his son.
“Hi baby, how was school?” Wilbur asked putting down the things he prepared for Tommy and kissed his forehead. Tommy leaned into his touch and happily ate his strawberries.
“It was great! Purpled came back today and we got married!” Tommy said, showing off his half eaten ring pop. Wilbur stared at him with his mouth wide open.
“I gotta go tell Uncle Tech and Grandza! Be right back dad!” Wilbur watched his son run out of the room yelling he got married.
Wilbur sat in the chair Tommy was just in. His mouth is still wide open.
What just happened?
---
A sixteen year old Tommy sat on his bed tying his shoes when his phone rang. When he looked at who was calling and saw Tubbos' contact he happily answered. “Hiya Tubs what's up?”
“Do you wanna go down to the pier and hang with me and Boo?”
Tommy pouted and put his phone on speaker so he could continue tying his laces.
“Aw Tubs I would love too but I can’t today.”
“Why the fuck not?”
Tommy rolled his eyes, “It’s Purpled and I’s anniversary today.”
“The fuck are you talking about Toms?”
“Dumbass, Purpled and I got married in grade three remember? You were literally my best fucking man.”
“What-”
“Oh Purpled’s here I gotta go! Bye Tubs!”
Tommy hung up and laughed when he heard Tubbo yell before he hung up. He ran out of his room giving his dad a kiss on the cheek and ran out the door and into Purpled’s car.
They both had actual rings now, though they did keep their ring pop bands. Tommy had a black ring with purple accents while Purpled had a blue ring with gold accents.
“Where to misio?”
Tommy groaned at his partner (platonic of course) and gave him the finger, “When will you stop calling me that?”
Purpled, laughed and started the car. “Never, misio, never.”
