“So, are you interested?” Mike asked. “There’s a gala for the opening in a couple of weeks. Thought it might be fun to have a little reunion, not just with my famous friends, but Eddie and Stan too.”
Richie grimaced and considered it. He hadn’t seen Eddie since Derry. There had been more than enough opportunities – trips to New York he had neglected to mention, reunions he had skipped, hangouts that he had scheduled then canceled to keep up the ruse. They were adults. They were busy. Ships in the night.
Pretty pathetic, when you got down to it. How long was Richie going to live his life pretending nothing had changed since getting his memories back? He had killed the clown, felt the heart turn to ashes in his fist himself. So why did he still feel like it was lurking behind every corner?
He thought of Derry, the town that seemed to ooze danger in his memories, imagined it the way Mike spoke about it now. A town trying to heal, trying to do better. It would be pretty pathetic if he let Derry leapfrog him in emotional growth.
“Sure,” Richie said, feeling shaky. “Let’s all go back to Derry. Can’t think of a better way to spend my long weekend.”
