Milk Run

Summary:

In hindsight, Kara hadn’t expected Lena Luthor’s monstrous side to be triggered by a food store, nor that she’d be the path that took her there, but she certainly feared her creation as she pushed two full trolleys laden with wine, cushions, books, more food than even Kara could eat and an obscenely large fountain that would look “just lovely” on Lena’s apartment balcony.

OR

Lena has never been to a supermarket, Kara rectifies that.

Notes:

I remembered that one scene from Modern Family where Cam takes Mitchell to Costco and he tries to buy the whole shop. I ran with it.

Work Text:

Kara’s stomach growled an almighty growl as she shuffled her way down the hall from Lena’s bedroom into the kitchen. She’d left her overworked girlfriend to sleep in, the CEO having come home late last night and collapsed into bed.

Kara dragged fingers through unruly curls, fumbling around with coffee mugs neatly stacked in the pristine cupboards. Even in her bleary eyed state Kara was careful to rein her strength in as she carefully opened and closed doors, wary of harming the perfect kitchen.

She turned to open the fridge, frowning to find it near empty save for some yoghurt, cheese and a single egg. Kara’s stomach further complained at the lacking sight of the fridge as she closed the door with a grunt and checked the breadbin in a last ditch effort some breakfast.

The soft sounded of Lena’s bare feet padding out of the bedroom reached her instantly and Kara looked up with a warm smile to see Lena’s dishevelled appearance shuffling as she had towards the kitchen.

‘Good morning, darling,’ Lena greeted, reaching out to Kara when she was within arm’s length and kissing her sweetly. Kara ducked in for another, holding Lena tight for a moment before letting her go and turning back to the coffee machine that was humming away.

‘Good morning,’ Kara replied, ‘you don’t have any food.’

‘Hmm?’ Lena hummed as she leaned against the counter, the sleep in her eyes still not quite gone.

‘Food,’ Kara repeated, picking up the coffee mugs and placing one in front of Lena. She perked up at the sight of it instantly, green eyes brightening. ‘How can you live like this?’

Lena grinned at Kara over her steaming mug, ‘not all of us are as food orientated as you, darling,’ she shrugged. ‘It simply slipped my mind.’

‘Unfathomably,’ Kara shook her head. ‘It’s okay, we can pop down to the Superstore. Not to brag but I’m pretty good at carrying shopping. We can pick up some milk and I’ll make pancakes.’

Lena blinked, ‘why? I’ll just send for my repeat grocery order; it’ll be here in half an hour.’

‘And miss the fun of impulse buying on an empty stomach?’

Lena laughed softly, her eyes soft on Kara. ‘An occupational hazard of yours, I’m sure.’

‘Worst I’ve ever done is buy three boxes of those twelve pack Krispy Kreme doughnuts and eat them in one sitting, I’d only gone out for eggs.’

‘Christ.’

‘Steel stomach,’ Kara shrugged.

‘Still, I’ll place the order and we can finish our coffee. No need to go off to this…Superstore.’ Lena replied, sipping her coffee as she reached over the counter for her tablet.

Kara watched her for moment as the curl of mischievous smile pulled at her lips. ‘You’ve gone food shopping before, haven’t you?’

Lena glanced at her and busied herself with her tablet as she replied in a higher voice, ‘of course!’

Kara’s grin widened. ‘Where do you buy them?’

Lena blinked, ‘in a supermarket.’

‘Which one?’

‘…the closest one?’

Kara laughed at this. ‘Unbelievable, you’ve never bought your own food before, have you!’

Lena glared at her, crossing her arms. ‘Don’t be ridiculous, of course I have bought my own groceries before, what kind of person…’ she trailed off at the smug look on Kara’s face. ‘Fine! But it’s only because growing up it’s what my parents did, I never thought it was odd until I lived on my own and even then I was already so busy it was just easier to get it delivered.’

‘I agree deliveries are efficient, but come on, Lena,’ Kara laughed. Lena scowled embarrassedly, hiding behind her mug. Kara moved around the counter to hug her, earning a half annoyed smile. ‘Come on, let’s go get that milk and open those eyes of yours.’

**

In a heartbeat they were dressed and gliding across town in Lena’s town car. Despite Kara’s infectious enthusiasm, Lena was still bemused at the prospect of traipsing around a crowded store for things she could simply have delivered.

But Kara was determined now beyond anything else to get Lena into a food store and practically jumped out of the car when they arrived at the ginormous superstore not far from her apartment.

‘Nothing needs to be this big,’ Lena muttered as she firmly took Kara’s hand before she dashed off.

‘It has to be, you can buy literally everything here,’ Kara replied, dragging Lena through the sliding glass doors.

‘I sincerely doubt you can buy “literally” anything,’ she muttered as Kara grabbed a trolley.

‘You’ll see,’ the kryptonian sang before setting off into the shop.

They began in the food section, grabbing the essentials and the various extras Kara wanted and craved with Lena humming about lower prices before they began to idly wander. Lena leant against the handle of the trolley, frowning up at the sheer size and height of the aisles.

‘Let’s just grab some snacky bits and we can be done,’ Kara assured her, leading Lena through the homeware section.

‘Thankfully,’ she hummed, pausing to look at a tower of boxed reading lamps. ‘Huh, here’s the reading lamp your sister has that I wanted.’

‘Oh, yeah,’ Kara poked her head around the aisle to see, ‘handy.’

‘Very!’ Lena chirped, placing it in the trolley, ‘saves me buying it online.’

‘Great, why don’t we get some wine while we’re out, they have that red you like here.’

‘They sell that? Here?’ Lena said, looking at the aisles with more interest now.

‘Come on.’

Kara led Lena over to the wine section, wincing at the high pitched sound she let out at the sight of the wine section.

‘My God, look how much they have! And these prices, I pay double this online!’ Lena swept into the aisle, grabbing wine from the shelves as Kara stood back grinning.

‘I told you, they have everything,’ her words fell on deaf ears as bottle after bottle was placed into the cart.

The monster formerly known as Lena was dashing around ahead of Kara, three packets of toilet roll under one arm and another lamp brandished in the other. ‘Oh! They have mattresses, we should get one.’

‘You have a mattress, Lena,’ Kara stressed, awkwardly trying to keep the trolley pushing in the same direction.

‘It won’t hurt to have a spare!’ Lena called back, rushing off into another aisle. ‘Stationary!’

‘Lena, honey, I think you’ve bought enough.’

No reply came as Kara abandoned the trollies in hopes of spotting Lena who was nowhere to been seen within the aisle. But not two seconds later did she reappear with a flatbed trolley laden with house plants and a crazed look in her eyes.

‘Oh, Rao,’ Kara muttered as a pile of succulents were placed in her hands.

‘This is incredible,’ Lena grinned, kissing Kara swiftly and shooting off once more waving a hand, ‘get me those armchairs over there, I’ll meet you over the by the coffins.’

Three arm chairs, a new bathroom towel set and two back up bathroom towel sets, and two thousand and thirty-six dollars later, they left the Superstore to the horror filled eyes of Lena’s driver as they approached him with half the store’s contents.

It was only when they’d returned to the apartment, carried everything inside normally as to not alert any of the building staff of Kara’s powers and collapsed onto the new armchairs did Kara quietly murmur, ‘we forgot the milk.’

Notes:

The first time I visited an American supermarket was jarring. I saw a man buy orange juice, five tubes of pringles, and gun in the same transaction.
