Just that little bit different

Summary:

Another day another kid who is dropped off. That’s how it’s always been. Though some kids are just a bit different, that’s fine too. Cause it isn’t just the sun that is good with kids, even if moon is nightmare fuel to most.

Kids can be different then what moon experiences.

Work Text:

While sunny was entertaining to all children, big or small. Moon was the scary one, the one that gave kids nightmares. He didn’t mind of course, he is a robot. But this kid, who was having a silent nightmare. Trying to protect himself with his little arms… it was something a bit different.

The kid woke up with a start, not wailing like all the other brats usually would for their mommy, but silently crying, covering their mouth trying not to let a noise out. At first he thought the kid was looking at his looming form, eyes forever glowing thanks to a design error, but he actually wasn’t. The kid seemed to look at their legs for a moment. Just… staring, before seeming to come down from his panic and looking to him. He looked a bit nervous but didn’t show the usual fear for moons glowing eyes.

More like a weary expression. Something moon has seen on adults and teens alike, but never on a child’s face.

“H… hi. A-are you moon?” Said child asked in the smallest whisper moon has ever heard. Moon crouched down and gave a small nod, the jingle of his hat soothing in the basically silent daycare. His feet as silent as they could be with those infuriating bells attached to them via horrible stitching.

“Oh… I-I’m sorry f-for w-waking up I d-didn’t mean to… I j-just can’t s-sleep usually… or e-else daddy will surprise me…” they carefully cradled their legs in his small arms. Eyes growing distance once more.

“Nah it’s fine, as long as your quiet and not chatting with anyone else your fine.” Moon gave a small wave of his hand, another jingle sounding.

“oh..” and that was that. Moon just silently watching for a moment longer before standing tall, walking closer, and carefully sitting down next to the kid, who flinched violently. He’d put it to his scary appearance. Wasn’t his fault no one checked to see how he looked in the dark.

“I’ll stay here while you sleep. You look tired.” The kid looked up with a small smile, the protection that moon told about unsaid but noted.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

The kid fell asleep easily after that. Going as far as to keep a hand clutching the fabric of his pants. This is what he liked about his job. Not the screaming kids but the quiet ones he could help to sleep. Though this one seemed a bit more the just plain quiet.

He’ll inform sun via note while he sleeps.

———

Moon was right this kid was kinda weird. They played off to the side with some blocks. Creatively stacking them together and making various objects. It was really cool. When he tried to tell them that though…

“Mommy says that I shouldn’t have fun… b-because it makes daddy drink… don’t tell please.” Sunny smiled as always but the multiple alarm bells in his programed mind were screaming at him. Even if he was an animatronic he could sorta get feelings. He understood what a good parent child relationship was. The way this kid talked about their parents was just…

“Jammie and ray please come up front for pick up.” He’d think about that later. He looked around through his database and was surprised to realize this kid was ray.

“Time to go, now say bye to your friends!” The kid didn’t move, looking around briefly before tugging sunnys sleeve.

“Can you tell moon I said bye… He was nice so he’s my friend right?” Moon was nice? That’s a start.

“Of course I’ll tell him! He’s resting right now but I’m sure he appreciates your words! Let’s go then!” As he led the small kid along, he also picked up ‘jammie’ and realized that this kid was one that had started trouble by not sharing.

Oh boy.

“Your boys are here!”

“Oh Jammie! Did you have fun?” The mother smiled happily, checking over Jammie to make sure he wasn’t hurt or anything. Jammie smiled proudly and puffed his small chest.

“Yeah! I was the king of the playground and I made a lotta friends!” His mother smiled happily before walking away with him. Completely ignoring ray who just followed with dull eyes. He gave a very small wave his way before walking out of the daycare. Through the door, there was Jammie getting hugs and holding hands with his parents like most loving parents would do. While ray just followed behind silently. No smile on his face and not even trying to intrude the moment.

What?

———

Jammie and ray where dropped off the next day. Jammie happily joining his friends that were already here while ray tried and failed not to limp over to his hidden little corner off to the side. Not even bothering with the blocks anymore and just staring off into the distance. His legs held close to himself. Sunny was beyond confused and because of his programming (just that nothing else like concern, he’s just a robot!) he walked on up and asked.

“Why the long face bud?” The kid didn’t answer, but slowly looked to him.

“Do you wanna get that leg fixed up?” The words sent something to the kids brains because he immediately flinched and backed away.

“No, I’m fine, don’t worry about it.” Not so timid now. Odd.

“Alright, if your sure! But if you need any assistance don’t hesitate to ask!” Time to leave a note for moony.

———

Moon finally got the chance to wake up, once the lights were finally out he looked around to see any bad kids. Not sleeping and such. He found one. Not even in the sleeping area, off to the side in one of the play structures, curled up on himself. Silently crying again.

“You alright kid?” The kid jumped bumping his head into the wall behind him before realizing it was ‘just moon’ which moon didn’t take offense to it just made him really surprised. He sat down next to the kid, just waiting a moment for them to calm down a bit.

“Why aren’t you with the others? It’s nap time you know…” the kid took a pause before looking him directly in the eye and asking.

“But the others said I had to stay here… b-because I’m stupid and they didn’t wanna catch it. I-I’m sorry I-I’ll go b-back…” he tried to stand but fell back down, moon just looking with concern.

“What’s up with your leg?”
“Tripped.” The immediate answer was obviously a lie, yet moon didn’t say a thing. He just got on his legs and crawled out. Coming back not a moment later with a first aid kit. The kid hugged his leg.

“It’s not going to get any better if you don’t fix it up. At least let me but a bandaid on it.” He joked, the kid paused before lifting his long pants. Moon feft bad for joking now. Along that exposed leg was bruises, up and down and all around. (Shut the fuck up sun now is not the time for kids jokes)

Moon stared for a moment, taking into account that the kid was shaking, close to crying as he didn’t make eye contact again.

“Let’s get you fixed up…” he didn’t ask, because this kid was terrified he would, And for once, moon didn’t want to be the monster under someone’s bed. The kid looked in surprise before nodding, a small brief smile slid across his face before moon got to work. It wasn’t anything to hard to do. Putting some cream carefully on them and wrapping a bandage around it as carefully as he could being a animatronic. The kid flinched every so often and every time he muttered a small sorry. It was genuine and soft, the kid cracking a small smile every time.

Once moon was done the kid looked at his handy work before looking at him with amazement.

“U-um… can you t-teach me h-how to do that?” The kid fiddled with his small fingers giving a small glance up at moon who had a fucking heart attack at how cute it was. What. the. hell.

Moon looked away flushed in embarrassment. Could he even flush?? Well he felt it! Like his motherboard was heating up because of overtime or something.

“Sure kid.” He’s starting to appreciate kids now.

———

When it was drop off, sun once again got the call for Jammie and ray. He bounced off and got Jammie first the time, when he tried to get ray too tough…

“Ray? Do you have to? He just gets in the way and makes daddy and mommy upset!” The kid pouted when sun assured they had to go get ray. When he found ray sitting along hugging his leg, he hoisted him up by the hand and subtly helped carry some weight off his leg by holding both kids hands. Jammie laughing happily at being pulled up and down like ‘a costar!’ While ray gave sunny a very grateful smile, though it quickly disappeared when he saw his mom who once again asked how Jammie’s day was and walked along. Ray struggling to follow along with their fast pace. Though when sunny saw the carefully wrapped bandages that peaked out from under those long pants sunny reminded himself to thank moon for being able to get through to that kid.

———

The next time they were dropped off it was separately. The mom signing Jammie out and the father signing ray out, much to the fathers clear disgruntled to the situation. Once they left, sunny immediately noticed how ray just didn’t move from where he stood. Staring at the ground with dull eyes. Long pants and sleeves only hinting at what laid beneath. Once Jammie was off sunny crouched in front of the kid and led him over to his usual hiding spot. (the corner)

“Here’s some blocks… uh… hey bud, moony said you and him talk a lot. But just know that I can talk too! Any friend of moony is a friend of mind! Alrighty?” The kid looked up a little too slowly, meeting Sunny’s unwavering gaze before looking back down with a smile and nodded.

“O-o-okay…”

———

Moon was pissed. Not saying he plays favorites but this kid was soon gunna make him start. He had a little keychain with a little crafted moon on it. This kid- he was giving it to him. His first ever gift. If he could cry he would be.

“Thanks kid… say you have anywhere that hurts?” The kid briefly looked around before nodding silently. He slowly lifting his sleves to reveal bandages, they were a bit sloppy but clearly moons teachings hadn’t gone over the kids head like most the others.

“Did you… trip, again?” Moon said it with as much sarcasm as he could making the kid smile. Though it dimmed.

“Y-yeah… u-um… moon?”
“Yeah?”
“Why does sunny call you moony? Is that your real name?” Moon sputtered not expecting the question, though he was quick to calm down.

“Ehem- well, it kinda is. Me and sunny aren’t like the other animatronics. We can feel human emotions and do things outside of our programing. Probably because we deal with kids and need to know how to react in certain situations. I don’t like being called moon usually because that’s my robot name… sunny called me it one day by accident and it’s stuck ever since… it feels nice… don’t tell sunny that though- I couldn’t possibly live that down.” The kid smiled and crossed his heart.

“I swear I won’t tell… moony.”
“Hey! Not you too!”
“Well I want you to feel nice because your nice to me. It’s only fair.”
“God kid your already giving me happy emotions- unintentionally I assume.”

“What’s untentionaly?”
“Unintentionally kid-“
They chatted the whole 4 hour nap time.

———

Drop off once again happened and everyone was leaving, Jammie left with his mother, though the dad was nowhere in sight. Sunny wasn’t too concerned. Because all parents had to leave their numbers with the staff so if they did accidentally leave a kid they would be quickly called to pick them up.

So he waited with ray, messing around with blocks and building different things. Chatting about stuff and talking about moony. They waited… and waited… and… waited.

No one came to pick ray up. The security guard of the daycare said that the number given was invalid so now ray was stuck at the daycare. For legal reasons they couldn’t take ray out of the daycare because that would mean the subtle contract would break and ray would be free game for the night robot guards to terrorized with their ‘security alert’ and the alarms would blare.

So it was decided after many phone calls that the kid would stay in the daycare and that since sunny had to charge moony could take care of him. Because they were certain of his programing.

It was dark as nap time in the daycare now. Moony just sat with ray as he tried and failed to sleep.

“H-hey moony?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you think…” there was a pause that moony knew wasn’t good.

“Do you t-think my p-parents left m-me here to g-get rid of me?” Tears were starting to build up and moony panicked slightly before resting a hand gently on the kids head.

“Well… do you want me to be honest?” The tears slowly flowed out and a small small smile was starting to make its way to rays face.

“Y-yeah…”

“Then yes, they probably did, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.” The kid looked at moony with a confused face.

“Well… from what I can tell your parents aren’t exactly nice people. I saw them complaining about the price of ice cream to a cashier and getting a manager earlier.” As if that explained everything the kid nodded along to continue.

“Also every time you trip… be honest kid… that’s not actually you is it?” He looked away slowly shaking his head no, it wasn’t him.

“Then I’m guessing it was your parents right?” A ever smaller nod, barely a inch of movement.

“That’s not what parents do. In my humble animatronic opinion. They can suck my star covered ass.” The kid giggled at the curse word.

“I didn’t know you could say bad words!”

“Well I don’t usually but I figured you’d know what I meant.”

———

Ray was in fact, officially abandoned. Turns out the family that ray was abandoned by was too busy celebrating their get away that they didn’t see the truck headed their way. He was an orphan now. Soon he would be sent to a near by orphanage to get a new and hopefully better family.

Sunny was holding rays hand as he got to the door, where a lady who looked pretty strict, stood back straight and paperwork ready.

“This is bye bud. You say bye to moony yet?” They nodded smiling softly.

“Yeah… moony said he likes it when you call him that. I said I’d promise not to tell but I want you to try and make him happy while I’m gone. He likes the color yellow and says he likes to talk with you even if it’s through notes. Ima go before he gets into another embarrassed rage. Bye sunny!” Ray went with the lady with a wave to him. Him waving back with a big goofy smile on his face.

“Moony? You like that I call you moony?”
‘Oh my god whyyyyy!’ Groaned one very embarrassed animatronic.

“Awe don’t be shy moony~!”
‘I’m not shy I just don’t like having my feelings spewed out to my best friend from my other best friend! It’s a triangle now fuuuuck-‘
“Language moony! Heheh!”

Notes:

Sun has a fear of being known to have earned human emotions and so is terrified of admitting anything related to it. That includes concern.

Moon thinks sun is a bit nutty in the head but can’t help but sometimes think the same as him. Though moon likes to keep each feeling separated so that both him and sun can try out the emotions and see where they lead.

Moon and sun don’t realize that they are the same animatronic. Not even the staff are aware.
