The gentle breeze of air conditioning swept through the almost empty corridors of the konbini. It was a welcome change from the sultry weather that prevailed behind the large glass front and the automatic entrance door.
With the desired item in his hand, Tobio walked down the aisle, keeping an eye out for his husband, who had trailed off a few minutes ago, mumbling something about ‘snacks’.
At this time of day – somewhere between lunch and afternoon – the konbini was almost empty, apart for the clerk perhaps and a red-haired customer who managed to disappear from view. Tobio frowned. Really, there were only three aisles in these shops, not exactly many opportunities to play hide and seek. He walked past the row of cakes and bread, and when he peeked into the next one, he smiled – finally a success – and walked towards his husband.
Shouyou had a cracker package of some sort in his hand and was busy reading the ingredients list. Probably checking whether the energy information matched their diet plan and that they didn't have to watch out for two less potatoes the next time they cooked curry.
Tobio smiled. He was actually grateful for his husband to pay attention to such things. Of course they followed a rather strict plan to keep their form, but Shouyou always managed to make their meals as delicious as if there was no diet plan at all. Not like the one attached to their fridge, or one of those files they got from their nutritionists.
"Shou," he mumbled as he stepped closer.
Shouyou hummed, but didn’t take his eyes off the product. Tobio stopped next to him and dropped what he had picked in the basket next to his husband’s feet. Since Shouyou showed no signs of deciding any time soon, Tobio looked around. But as he wasn’t particularly interested in any chocolate bar or candy, he regarded his husband with a curious look.
Shouyou, who was still studying the list carefully, wore a tank top and shorts that showed off his tanned skin and the firm muscles of his legs. His short hair was a little damp at its tips, but the rest was as fluffy and soft-looking as ever. A bead of sweat had dripped down Shouyou’s neck and was now melting against his nape.
Tobio fixated it for a few moments.
When Shouyou eased out of his pose, relaxed his broad shoulders, lowered the snack package and turned his head, he smiled as soon as he saw his husband standing next to him.
"Tobio, I just fou– To–Tobio?"
Tobio blinked and retreated his hand. He had unconsciously reached out to touch the bead of sweat that was now sticking to his hand.
"Uhm," he replied, more or less helpfully.
"Was there something?"
"Yeah, no, yes."
"Which one?" Shouyou chuckled and felt for his neck. "Eww, gross," he said when he pulled back and studied his glistening fingers with mild disgust; then he added with a sigh spilling from his lips, "I wanna shower."
Tobio smiled. "We’ll be back home soon."
Shouyou raised an eyebrow. "We just went out to get some stuff, though."
"It feels longer."
"Mhm." Shouyou hummed. "Anyway, I wanna try these," he added and shook the snack package.
"Can we eat them?"
"Of course we can eat them, what do you think this is, toxin?"
"We’re able to eat toxin, Shou. Not that we should do that, but we can."
"Tobio," Shouyou placed a hand against Tobio’s chest, his palm was hot and sweaty, but Tobio didn’t mind, "please never eat toxin." He looked much more serious than Tobio had expected after a joke.
"Of course not, who else would give you the best tosses?" he returned.
Shouyou raised his hands to brush the back of his fingers over Tobio’s cheek. "My tosses aren’t that bad either, you know?"
"You still need me, though."
"Yeah," Shouyou whispered, "I need you."
They looked at each other, a little perplexed and a little too much in love for a public konbini.
"A–anyway, these?" Tobio cursed his stutter but he glanced down at the snack package.
"Er, ah yeah, these." Shouyou chuckled, adorably confused. As he was about to put the snacks in the basket, he asked, "What did you get? You said we needed something and earlier I think you dropped–"
Shouyou stared down at their basket and Tobio followed his gaze. He saw the few items: snacks, masks, a packet of curry, and…
"Tobio," Shouyou said, "you did not just casually put a fucking bottle of lube in my basket, did you?"
"I did," Tobio replied, stating the obvious. "Why? You will profit from it as well, won’t you?"
It was almost endearing to watch his husband get flustered, blink and stare at him with wide eyes full of surprise.
"Well, I do," Shouyou finally agreed, "but… How can you… When did you become an adult, Kageyama-kun?" he asked, gaping at him.
Tobio rubbed his hot cheeks. "Well, excuse me for taking care of my husband."
"Aww, you’re really cute, you know that?" Shouyou reached out once more and trailed with his fingers the same path across Tobio’s cheeks he had just a moment ago. "That’s why we had to come out in the sweltering weather today?"
"I just want to be prepared. Since it’s you we’re talking about."
"What do you mean?"
Tobio shrugged, but he smiled when he answered, "You can be quite insatiable, you know?"
Shouyou grinned back. "You like it."
"Mhm, maybe I do."
A grin flit across Shouyou’s lips. "So," he said and rattled with the basket, "what else do we need?" he paused, "Condoms?"
"We have plenty."
"Are you sure?"
"I am, we just recently bought some."
A huff. "Alright, if you say so." Shouyou glanced around. "Something else then?"
"Yeah." Tobio nodded to the front aisle. "I wanted to see if the new issue is out."
"Oh, sure. Good idea."
They walked back to the glass front and stopped at the magazine corner. As Tobio began searching for the familiar letters of Volleyball Monthly, Shouyou hummed under his breath and skimmed the racks filled with glossy papers and colourful pages.
"Hey look."
"Hm?" Tobio mumbled like a question and picked up the January issue of Volleyball Monthly from the very back, which was still smooth and shiny with only a small amount of traces of foreign fingerprints.
"It’s about us!"
"Hm? What is?" asked Tobio, without taking his eyes off the magazine he began to leaf through.
"Tobioooo, you need to look."
Tobio frowned and tore his eyes away from the advertisement page to see his husband’s face light up with joy. He too had a magazine in his hand, some glossy gossip rag by the look of it, and showed him the front page.
A woman with blonde hair and green eyes, who looked vaguely familiar to Tobio, filled most of the front page, but Shouyou wasn’t pointing at her. His tanned finger tapped two lines at the bottom that made it seem like it had once been a big headline and was now some kind of reminder or call to throw the story back into everyday life, like a bone to a dog.
"Oh," Tobio made, but it was merely a sound of acknowledgment that he had read it.
What is the truth behind the secret marriage of Kageyama-senshu and Hinata-senshu?
Pictures of hidden necklaces revealed. Possible wedding locations.
It was only a matter of time before someone would accidentally record their necklaces on which they wore their wedding rings. Therefore, Tobio wasn’t very surprised. In fact, he wasn’t stirred at all by the lines and just shrugged.
"Nothing? Come on, Tobio. It’s about us!"
"Shh." He scowled. "Do you want others to notice? It’s our day off, besides, I don’t have a pen for autographs with me."
Shouyou stared at him, then he giggled. "You’re adorable, you know that? Anyway, there’s no one here," he added before Tobio could contradict to his words, "and I bet the staff is like, in their break room right now anyway. It’s not exactly rush hour."
Tobio raised an eyebrow. "Is there something like a rush hour for getting food?"
"When there’s the actual rush hour perhaps? And well, there’s always a need for food, so I guess, yeah?"
"You stomach just too much at once."
"Oi! I have a balanced diet!"
"I know, Shou, we live together. I know exactly what you eat and where it goes–"
"Eww."
"–which is why I’m very much aware of your diet, thank you."
Shouyou boxed his side playfully, then he waved with the magazine. "I’m gonna read this."
"As long as we won’t buy that."
"Nah, we know everything anyway, right? The number of people present was small to begin with. I just wanna know if they guessed correctly."
Tobio studied his husband, who mumbled "where is… ah, page 20", flipped open the gossip sheets, and smiled. Shouyou was right, there hadn’t been that many people present at their wedding. Everything had been organised and they had even asked Coach Hibarida if they would be able to wear their rings.
As he read through the article, Shouyou nodded, giggled quietly, and agreed or disagreed with whatever was written there. Tobio didn’t care what it was, if it was interesting, he could trust his husband to fill him in on it later after all.
Ignoring the advertisement page, Tobio closed Volleyball Monthly, wrapped an arm around his husband to pull him close and kissed his temple.
"Wh–wha– Tobio? Why did you…"
"Are you done reading? Let’s go home." Tobio took the basket and walked to the check-out, hearing his husband follow him after a few seconds.
The clerk was indeed in their break room, but they quickly emerged as soon as they saw Tobio standing there, placing the basket on the counter. If the clerk saw anything odd about the purchase of lube from two well-built men, they didn't let it show. Everything was packed into a plastic bag, Tobio paid, and as he turned to face his husband, the "Thank you very much for your purchase" echoed in his ears.
"Let’s go?"
Shouyou nodded.
They walked through the automatic doors, which opened and closed again, and then they were outside in the summer sun.
It wasn’t even five seconds before Shouyou slipped his hand into the back pocket of Tobio’s shorts.
"Oi!" Tobio was startled, but in a pleased sort of way.
Shouyou looked at him with innocent eyes. "Hm?" he asked.
"You’re…"
"Insatiable?"
Tobio smiled and sighed, "Yeah."
"You like it."
The way his husband smirked made him chuckle, rough and tender. "I do," he whispered.
With the purchase dangling from his hand and his other arm around Shouyou’s shoulder, the two men left the parking lot to make their way back home.
If the clerk behind the glass front stared curious holes in his back, Tobio didn’t care.
