And if it wasn’t for the decades Hydra spent torturing him into controlling his emotions, Bucky might’ve let his surprise at Sam’s casual admission of his feelings show on his face. Because Sam, for all of his lighthearted posturing and easygoing banter, has a difficult time sharing his feelings with anyone: his need to always keep his head above water, put one foot in front of the other and just keep going being simultaneously one of his greatest and worst attributes.
In the year that he’s spent being Sam’s partner, Bucky’s learned that Sam’s habitual smile and inherent need to help others is sometimes a defense mechanism he uses when he’s either unable or unwilling to turn any of his sharpened psycho analytical skills inward.
