Chapter 1: How the Boss finds out?

Chapter Text

I can see Whistler has been pacing by the elevators for the past 15 minutes. Just to stop the heel clicking I can hear from my office I make way over to her.

“Whistler, do you need anything? I don’t think we need any intel for this case.”

She looks startled like I broke her out of a trance. “Um no, I was just coming by to check on everyone. Ernie told me some members of your team got hurt when tracking the suspect.”

I remember earlier today when Jesse called me to tell me that Lucy got banged up taking down the suspect, but everyone else was fine. Ernie doesn’t usually talk to DIA unless it was about a case. “Lucy just has some bruises along her back and was cleared by the base’s doctor. Can I ask why Ernie would call you about Lucy?”

Whistler looks panicked by my response which I can’t figure out why yet. “No reason, I just wanted to make sure everyone was okay. Um I am just going to get going.”

Before I can think better about it, “Lucy is in the med bay next to Ernie’s office if you want to check on her. She doesn’t have a concussion, but she went down there to rest because her head hurts.”

“Okay, thanks.” Whistler says before basically running away. I head back to my office and think about that interaction more. Whistler is not one to look panicked or even really be that concerned about the team’s safety. She usually would just text me about it to make sure no one was seriously injured. Why was this different? I know her and Lucy had some tension for whatever reason, but they seem to be getting along better now. I mean everyone can see they are pining after each other, if the heart eyes are anything to go by, but I didn’t think they would be official yet. I decide to just ask Ernie to come to my office and ask him why he told Whistler.

“What’s up, Boss?”

“Why did you tell Whistler that Lucy was injured?”

“Oh, she asked me to keep her informed when someone gets injured, or we have a dangerous situation involving the team. Especially after Lucy got hurt during the case with the Coast Guard.” He says as if it was the most normal thing.

“Why does the DIA need that information?” Now, I am getting kind of worried we are getting investigated or something and misread Whistler’s and Lucy’s interactions.

“Oh… They don’t, I think it is because of the recent development between Lucy and Whistler, but that is all I can say. I have been sworn to secrecy. But don’t worry its personal, it has nothing to do with work. I am surprised you haven’t figured it out.” Ernie says with the biggest grin on his face and his tablet pings with results for the case. “Oh, I have to go see what this is about. Got to go.”
I decide maybe I should just ask Lucy what has been going on. There are no rules against dating people from different agencies, but I just want to make sure I understand the situation. That also means I won the bet against Jesse.

I head down to the room I told Whistler about where Lucy should be resting. I can hear Lucy talking in a soft calming voice.

“Kate, I am okay, I promise it is just some bruises. I was going to text you as soon as my head stopped hurting.”

“Its okay, I was just worried when Ernie texted me. I just hate knowing you are hurt, and I can’t do anything to help.” That is definitely Whistler’s voice, it sounds so soft and uncertain which is the opposite of all my interactions with her.

“Well, it would help if you just laid down with me. My head is killing with me, and I just want to take a nap, and I am always more comfortable knowing your there.” I can hear the vulnerability in Lucy’s voice and a few moments later I hear some movement in the room. I almost feel guilty hearing their interaction.

“How is this? I don’t want to hurt you.” Whistler’s voice has never sounded so soft.

“Its perfect, if you need to leave for work, please just wake me up.” Lucy sounded so childlike that I almost walk in the room to comfort her.

“Hey, I am not leaving, I got someone to cover for me right after Ernie texted me. Rest now and when you are feeling up to it, I will take you home.” Whistler’s authority voice peaked through a little, which almost causes me to start laughing.

I peak into the room and see them curled up on the bed with Whistler holding Lucy. I decide to not interrupt them. I realized that Ernie must have known about their relationship.

I head back up to my office, not before texting Lucy that she should head home and get some rest and that no one will interrupt her while she is in the med bay. In the group chat with the rest of the team I text them saying Lucy is going home for the day after she gets some rest but should not be interrupted. I want to give them a chance to tell the rest of the team about their relationship in their own time, but they need to control their heart eyes until then.
