Work Text:
Powder was about to lose her shit.
She’d been trying to fix her hair for over an hour now with little to no success, her hair becoming a tangled mess.
It’s not exactly easy trying to do a braid behind your head by yourself.
No one ever took the time to teach her how to do her own hair. Vi had short hair for as long as she could remember and Vander never really showed how he did her braid for her either.
And now she was sat on the ground in front of a dusty mirror with no idea what she’s doing.
Letting out a frustrated growl, Powder threw her brush against her bedroom wall.
“…Can’t do anything right.” she muttered, tears forming in her eyes.
Why couldn’t she do one simple little braid? It really shouldn’t be so difficult.
‘because you’re a jinx’
Vi’s words echoed in her head, reminding her of the memory she tried so hard to forget.
“Shut up!” she screamed, pulling at her hair.
“I didn’t say anything.”
Powder’s head jerked up and she locked eyes with Silco, who was leaning against the doorway.
“What’s the matter? Is there a reason why you’re throwing a tantrum?” Silco asked, running a hand through his hair.
Quickly wiping away at her tears, Powder stood up immediately and mumbled an, “I’m so sorry, I won’t do it again”
Silco just silently stared at her with a raised eyebrow. He then glanced at the hairbrush she threw moments ago and let out a deep sigh.
She watched as he slowly made his way into the bedroom and towards her her brush lying on the floor.
The man picked up the hairbrush and walked over to her.
“sit.”
Not wanting to anger or disappoint Silco, Powder immediately sat down without a word.
“You know, in cases like these, the best thing to do is ask for help.” he said, sitting down behind her.
Powder looked at him confused, “Do you even know how to braid hair?” she asked.
“Of course.” He scoffed, gently untangling her hair, “It’s not too difficult. And with enough practice, you’ll also know how.”
She looked away, a small smile tugging at her lips.
“Do you think you’d be able to teach me?” Powder asked hopefully.
She wanted to be able to do her own hair without any help one day. Then she’d be one step closer to being more mature, she thinks.
“I don’t see why not. Here, I can show you a bit while I braid your hair.”
Silco then pulled out a small, portable mirror and handed it to her.
She angled it so she could see the back of her head easily.
“Alright, so first you want to part your hair intro three separate strands.”
Powder watched intently as Silco braided her hair, listening to each instruction carefully. She wanted to remember every detail being given to her.
“And finally, you grab the hair tie-“ Silco said, holding out his hand for her to give him the tie. Once she handed it to him, he swiftly tied her hair, “-and voila! One braid. Think you can remember all of that?” He asked.
“Yes!” Powder smiled brightly, “Thank you.”
She looked up at the man and could have sworn she saw him smile. Or maybe it was the poor lighting in the room. Yeah, that made more sense.
“Now, keep practicing. You’re capable of accomplishing anything.” Silco said, standing up.
“If you need my help again, simply ask. Or, if you’d prefer, you can always ask Sevika. I’m sure she’d be of some help.” He said, walking towards the door.
“Ah, that’s ok. I think I like how you do my hair, it’s pretty.” Powder said quickly. She didn’t really like Sevika that much, the woman was scary.
Silco quietly chuckled, “Alright, I’ll be out for the day. I have a few meetings to attend to.”
Walking out the door, he called out one last time, “You should keep building those machines of yours. They’re pretty good.”
And with that, the man was gone.
Powder looked into the mirror and wiped away at the dust.
She smiled.
Silco believes in her. He thinks that her machines are good and not a waste of time.
A jinx, huh?
It does have a nice ring to it.

Over time, she does learn how to braid her own hair.
But that doesn’t stop the girl from asking Silco to do her hair for her. She thinks he does it way better and enjoys being in his company.
And although he likes to complain and act like he doesn’t want to, he ends up doing as she asks anyways.
Sometimes he even asks to do it for her when he’s stressed or having a bad day. He secretly finds it relaxing.
And… if she notices a small smile from the man during their braiding sessions, she pretends not to notice.
…It must be the poor lighting.
