They sit there, her gloved hands in his bare ones, sitting on the floor of the apartment they share, with the cat that Declan had started feeding in the alley behind their building and then brought home because he liked a lost cause as much as any of them, Jordan’s sketches on the walls side by side with the art they collected, a cast iron skillet that Declan does not let Matthew touch after what he dubs ‘The Incident’, a remarkably ugly sofa that Jordan brought home from a thrift store that Declan had promptly fumigated after sending her an email filled with links to articles about bed bugs, the dining table that Declan had built after Jordan had retaliated by sending him an email filled with links to art therapy options and he’d selected woodworking, pictures Matthew had taken of their family with the camera Declan had given him for his birthday, the cat’s toys strewn in places convenient only for her, Jordan’s art supplies strewn in places convenient only for her, Declan’s books neatly tucked away in shelves convenient for everyone.
Yes, she was in deep.
She pulls his hand up to her mouth, kisses it. Leans forward, kisses his cheek, and then his mouth.
Pulling back, she says: “I bought gloves for you too.”
