Work Text:

"You know there's going to be a new carnival in town?" Mina whispers as she flips the page from the book she has in her hands.

"Really?! That sounds like so much fun!" Naru excitedly exclaimed.

"Yeah! It's this Friday actually. I was thinking we could all go. It's been awhile since we've all hung out." Mina put the book back and reached for another book on the shelf above it. She was too short but luckily their friend, Makoto, grabbed the book for her and handed it to her.

"I'm not doing anything on Friday so I can definitely go. I'm planning on dropping off a box of pastries to Rei's shrine after school, I'll ask her then." Makoto leaned up against the bookshelf.

"I'll ask my mom when I get home! She'll most likely say yes. What about you, Usagi?" Naru turns her head to look at her best friend but she finds that Usagi is staring at a girl on the other side of the library. Naru can tell from Usagi's expression that she hasn't been listening at all. Naru waves her hand in front of Usagi's face. "Earth to Usagi!"

"Huh?!" Usagi yelps out while jumping back. "Yeah Naru?" She nervously says while chuckling.

"The carnival on Friday? Are you going?" Naru asks.

"Are you staring at that girl again?" Makoto asks while looking in the direction that Usagi was staring at. Makoto clicks her tongue as she sees the girl that Usagi was eyeing.

Ami Mizuno.

The smartest girl in their school was sitting at a table nose deep in a text book while writing down notes on a notebook next to her.

"You totally are!" Makoto laughs.

"Usagi's looking at a girl?" Mina asks with a raised brow.

"N-No! I was just thinking about what collar I should get Luna!" Usagi blushes while rubbing the back of her head.

"Like Luna would even let you put a collar on her." Naru sarcastically responds.

"You should ask her out!" Makoto excitedly tells her while holding on to Usagi's hands.

"Ask her out?! But she doesn't even know who I am! And I don't even know if she's into girls!" Usagi quickly rejected while removing her hands from Makoto's.

"Actually, I'm pretty sure she is a lesbian." Mina responds while putting her finger on her chin.

"See Usagi! You don't have anything holding you back!" Naru encourages her.

"My fear of rejection is one thing holding me back." Usagi bluntly replies.

Naru and Makoto looked at each other. Usagi should have known that she was doomed the moment they got on the same wavelength. The two of them shoved Usagi out of the aisle they were in. "Go for it, Usagi!" They both loudly whispered at her.

Usagi stumbled out into the more open area of the library. She nervously held onto her purse strap and walked up to Ami. "Um… hello?"

"Oh, hi." Ami awkwardly waves at her. "Do you need something?"

"Not really? Well kinda? I- Uh." Usagi stuttered while getting redder and redder. Ami patiently waited for Usagi to answer her question. "I need your time!" She rushed out.

"My time?" Ami asks confusedly.

"Yeah! On Friday!" Usagi confirms feeling slightly more confident than before. "There's a carnival on that day and I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me?" She finally asked her.

Ami stared at Usagi as if she lost her mind. "You want to go on a date with me?" She doubtfully asks.

"Yeah! You don't have to say yes if you don't want to." Usagi clarified. "I don't want you to feel uncomfortable."

"No, No! I'll go. It's just… I've never had someone ask me out so this is kinda shocking." Ami cleared up for Usagi. "And to answer your question, I would love to go to the carnival with you."

Usagi's heart fluttered at the acceptance. "I guess I'll see you on Friday then!" She turned to walk back to her friends that were eagerly waiting for her but was stopped by a hand grasping on to her arm. She was greeted with Ami smiling sweetly and handing her a piece of paper with her phone number on it. Usagi took the note and rushed back to her friends.

"Did she say yes?!" Makoto immediately asked while shaking her.

"Guess who has a date on Friday!" Usagi laughed.

"Yes!!!" Naru excitedly yelled out. Her outburst earned the group multiple glares and shushing noises.

"We should go get you a new outfit for your date!" Mina happily suggests as she takes Usagi by the arm and drags her out of the library with Naru and Makoto following them.

As the week passed, Usagi could feel herself getting more and more anxious as Friday approached. Usagi started fussing about her appearance even more than usual and was doing her school work on time not only out of stress but to make sure that her mom doesn't decide to not let her go out on Friday at the last second.

Once Friday arrived, she used most of the morning and early afternoon to calm down her nerves. She ended up getting dressed two hours before the date. Usagi could feel her nervousness creeping up again. She decided to video call with her closest friends to make time go by faster. Rei picked up first, her camera was pointing at her as she did her makeup. Surprisingly, Mina could be seen in the background constantly changing her outfit. Next to accept was Naru, her camera pointed at her ceiling as the sound of a running shower could be heard in the background. The last person to accept was Makoto, her camera showed her icing a two layer cake.

"Hey girls!" Makoto greeted them, being the first person to talk. "Can you believe someone ordered such a big cake last minute?"

"Aw man! That thing is so big! Please tell me you'll still be able to go to the carnival!" Usagi whined.

Makoto quietly laughs behind her hand. "I should be done in like an hour. I'm probably just going to be like twenty minutes late."

"Speaking of carnival, I heard a little bunny has a date~" Rei teased while pointing at the screen with her mascara wand. "Who's the lucky person?" She asks while putting her head on her hands.

"Ami Mizuno. She's this really cute and smart girl in our school." Usagi blushed.

"Usagi with a smart girl?" Rei lifted her eyebrow. "How could you manage that?"

"Hey!" Usagi whined out as Makoto and Naru called out about Rei betraying Usagi.

Mina comes up from behind Rei and pinches her ear. "Rei! That's just mean even for you. Besides, it balances it out if you think about it."

"True, she makes up for what Usagi lacks." Rei jokes. Usagi and Rei continue bickering for the rest of the call while Mina buts in every once in a while to either defend Usagi or to ask if her outfit was okay.

Once it was time to head to the carnival, everyone said their goodbyes and Rei made them all promise to stay out of Usagi's and Ami's way. Usagi arrived at the carnival in no time thanks to how fast she can run when she feels like it. Her eyes found Ami immediately. Usagi couldn't help the way her face flushed red. Ami was just too cute!

"Mizuno!" Usagi ran towards her while waving her arms in the air.

Ami gave a small wave and smiled at Usagi. "Hi Usagi, what do you want to do first?"

"I wanna ride that!" Usagi took Ami by the hand and dragged her towards the tea cups. When the two of them got on the ride, Usagi started spinning the cup with all her might. It took awhile before Ami joined in but once she did the two of them started spinning like crazy. The force from the air pushed them back against the seat making them have to reach to the wheel to continue spinning. Once they got off Usagi leaned onto Ami. "I don't think I can walk anymore."

"Maybe we did go a little too fast." Ami laughed at Usagi.

"Mizuno~" Usagi whined. "Let me win you something!"

"Win me something? Like a stuffed animal?" Ami blushed.

"Yeah!" Usagi shouted as she dragged Ami towards the basketball hoop booth. She hands the booth operator five bucks as she picks up a ball and attempts to shoot into the net. All of her throws missed horribly, one went over the booth, another almost hit the operator and the rest weren't even close to the net. "No!" Usagi yelled out as she watched her last ball fall to the ground.

"Oooo, so close." The operator pitied her.

"I'm so bad at this…" Usagi sniffs as she wipes a fake tear from her face.

Ami puts her hand on Usagi's shoulder. "Let me give it a try." She suggests as she hands the operator five dollars. Ami studied the hoop for ten seconds before she started shooting perfect shots right after one another. She ended up not missing a single shot.

"That's actually really impressive." The operator commented. "Pick your prize, ma'am." They gestured to the plushies on the walls.

Ami took a quick glance at all the prizes, waiting for one to strike the nerve she was looking for. Her face lit up as soon as she saw what she was hoping for. "That one." She pointed at a cat plushie wearing a bunny hoodie.

"Aw~ it's so cute!" Usagi coos as she watches the operator hand the plushie over.

"It's for you." She tells her as she pushes the plushie into Usagi's arms.

"For me?! Aw! Thanks Mizuno!" Usagi gushes and rubs nose with the plushie before pausing and going wide-eyed. "Wait! I was supposed to win you the plushie!"

Ami covers her hand as she laughs. "If you still want to get me something then you can get me some funnel cake." Ami suggests.

"Ooo~ Funnel cake!" Usagi excitedly cheered. She grabbed onto Ami's hand with her free hand and ran them to the food carts. They made their way through the crowded area to the cart with all the snacks. They stand in line talking for a while as they wait to order. Ami ends up helping Usagi with naming the plushie because Usagi insisted that the plush needs a good name. Once they get their cakes, they sit down at one of the picnic tables and start eating. Once they're finished, they decide to go on all the different rides until it's dark enough for the ferris wheel.

Usagi and Ami walk out of the exit for the mouse trap as they hold on to each other. "You screamed so loudly, Usagi." Ami comments while lightly bumping herself into Usagi.

"Those turns make it feel like we're about to fall!" Usagi claims while playfully hitting Ami with the plushie.

"You're just a big scary cat!" Ami laughs as she starts to speed walk towards the ferris wheel. "Come on Usagi! There's barely no line!"

"I'm coming! I'm coming!" Usagi laughs as she jogs to keep up with Ami.

Usagi and Ami make it on time to the Ferris wheel where they don't have to wait in line to get on. They end up sitting next to each other on the same bench.

"I love the Ferris Wheel!" Usagi exclaims.

"Me too! It reminds me of when me and my mama would go to the carnival on her days off." Ami comments while looking at the whole fair from above.

"It's so pretty!" Usagi responds. A silence overtook the cart but it wasn't one of awkwardness. The silence was contentment. "You know I can only think of one other view that's as pretty as this one." Usagi muttered out.

"Huh?" Ami turns towards Usagi.

"Your smile. It's super pretty. I wish you would do it more." Usagi blushed.

Ami's face was completely red. "Well…If you want to see it some more, then we should go to the beach together." Ami awkwardly looked away.

"WAIT! DOES THIS MEAN WHAT I THINK IT MEANS?!" Usagi screamed.

"A second date?" Ami replies.

"WOOHOO!!" Usagi yelled while hugging Ami and kissing her on the cheek. "I'M SO EXCITED, MIZUNO!"

Ami presses her hand to where Usagi kissed her and smiled. "Call me Ami, Usagi."

Usagi screeched of pure joy and started chanting Ami's name while looking out of Ami's side of the cart. First Date is a success!
