"You foolish child! Have you not heard a word I've said? He is the Black Heretic. You are nothing but a tool!" she spit, her voice a furious whisper. The shadows simmered around her, extending and retreating with her every word.
"I heard you well enough. And now I'll hear it from him as well." He owed her that much. "I am not running. If he is indeed who you say he is, he needs to be stopped."
"You think you can stop him, then?" she asked with a condescending laugh that only hardened her resolve.
"At least I'll try. I prefer it to hiding or running away. And where exactly am I supposed to run to? Escape a controlling man only to follow his controlling mother? I'll take my chances with myself."
