The Bank Is Closed

Summary:

A tale of Cal's plot for revenge, Jack's slightly sociopathic tendencies, and an unlikely romance.

or

(Wherein two students' inept teacher makes the mistake of giving them the task of creating an alternate ending to the teacher's favorite movie: Titanic, thus they write this glorious fan fiction.)

Notes:

Our teacher, Dina, bade us create an alternate ending to Titanic, with no preparation for writing, other than us watching the movie. This was the result. Needless to say, she doesn't like us anymore.

Work Text:

The scene starts with the rear of the Titanic going up and people gathered on the end holding onto the railing. ROSE and JACK are still on the edge of the deck, holding onto the railing.

ROSE

Panicked

Oh- Jack!

ROSE is, evidently, having some trouble holding onto the railing.

JACK

Reassuringly

Don’t worry, Rose. You’ll be okay, just- ...don’t let go. You’ll fall and die.

ROSE

Okay, Jack, I believe you.

ROSE sees PASSENGER 1 trying to climb up the railing to get to them and then fallS. They scream, hit their head twice, and go silent.

JACK

Oh my god. I think he’s dead.

ROSE and JACK successfully get on top of the railing.

ROSE glares at him for pointing out the obvious. The ship is now completely vertical and at a stand still.

ROSE

Scared

Jack, I’m scared. What if I- what if I fall?

JACK

I won’t let you fall. Trust me.

JACK proceeds to stand up on the railing.

ROSE

Jack! What are you doing?! You’ll fall!

JACK reaches out his hand to ROSE.

JACK

Take my hand, Rose.

ROSE

You- you’re crazy..

PASSENGER 2, who was leaning forward on the railing, has now fallen. On their way down they hit 3 others, causing them to slide down the ship with them.

JACK

Have I ever let you fall? Did I drop you when you almost jumped? No, I didn’t. What makes you think I’d drop you now?

ROSE

Okay, I trust you.

After ROSE takes JACK’s hand and they both stand up, ROSE screams. They T-pose on the railing that is nearly parallel to the ocean. The Titanic theme plays as Rose gets emotional.

JACK

See? We’re going to live, I promise.

Whispering

… And if we don’t, at least we’re the happiest whippersnappers alive, right now.

ROSE giggles a bit whilst crying both tears of fear and tears of joy.

ROSE

I love you, Jack.

ROSE starts crying even harder now. She turns and cries onto JACK getting all her snot and tears all over JACK’s clothes. He grimaces at that.

JACK

I- uh, love you, too, Rose.

He now has a downtrodden expression on his face. JACK’s body language suggests that he would like to move away from ROSE.

ROSE

I wonder where Cal is right about now.

Hesitantly, Guiltily

...I wouldn’t mind if he didn’t make it to safety.

JACK

I’m sure he’s suffering, wherever he is right now.

Cut to CAL watching them from a boat, warm and comfortable as can be.

CAL

Evilly

I’m so glad that I have this boat all to myself, now. Those other people were insufferable.

Chuckling

Well, I’m sure they like the water, it’s where they belong.

CAL sees the ship start to go down and laughs knowing that JACK and ROSE were still on it. He looks to the rear of the ship and sees JACK and ROSE T-posing on top of it.

What are they doing? Those ding-bats. They’ll kill themselves...

CAL’s face darkens and tone shifts to an unsettling one.

...before I get the chance to.

Cut back to JACK and ROSE who are screaming at the top of their lungs.

ROSE

Jack! Ahhh! Jack we’re going down! Oh no!

People are now jumping off the ship to try and survive.

JACK

Rose, I need you to stay calm.

JACK is visibly irritated because of ROSE’s screaming and overreacting.

We’re going to be fine. On the count of 3, we’re going to jump off, okay?

ROSE

Okay, I- I trust you.

JACK

Once you get in the water, swim like never before and get away from the ship. Ready? One… two… three!

They jump off the ship and JACK makes sure to go the opposite way so ROSE doesn’t weigh him down. ROSE is struggling to get away from the ship but JACK is able to get away and secure a door for them to sit on. After a minute, ROSE finds JACK and they both sit on the door.

ROSE

Breathing heavily

I think we’re far enough away. I hope that someone will come with a boat to save us.

JACK

I hope so, too. I’m f-freezing to death here!

ROSE gives JACK the jacket she was wearing. JACK stays where he is, rather than huddling together with ROSE for warmth. They stay silent for a while.

Cut back to CAL.

CAL sees the ship sink, knowing that ROSE and JACK are now somewhere in the water. He takes out his revolver, grinning sinisterly. He checks that it is loaded before hiding it in the waistband of his pants. CAL starts to row towards JACK and ROSE, whilst laughing maniacally at his master plan.

Cut back to JACK and ROSE.

ROSE

Jack… it’s so.. cold.

They are both shivering and it is hard for them to talk.

JACK

I’ll get out of this… uh, we’ll get out of this. The boats.. should be… coming.

They see a boat coming in the distance but can only whisper to get it’s attention. They have to hope it will see them.

CAL

Hello?! Is anyone there?

Whispering

Take a gander at these bozos. Smoking them will be duck soup.

ROSE

Whispering

 Cal?

CAL doesn’t respond.

JACK

What.. are you… doing here..

CAL

Menacingly to JACK

Oh, I thought it was obvious. It’s clearly not to help you. I want you to suffer. I’m here to take away what you care about.

He picks up the gun and slowly points it at ROSE.

JACK

You… you wouldn’t dare, you crumb.

CAL puts his finger on the trigger.

CAL

Gleefully

Oh, wouldn’t I?

He pulls the trigger and shoots ROSE. She screams before sinking promptly into the ocean.

JACK stays silent before sighing in what appears to be relief.

JACK and CAL sit there for a few moments.

CAL

Bewildered

You’re not sad?

JACK has a not exactly sad look on his face .

JACK

Not exactly.

CAL

Quietly

You’re such a bimbo.

JACK

I’m as much a bimbo as I am a creep.

CAL reaches his hand out to JACK to pull him into the boat.

What?

CAL

Vaguely irritated

What does it look like I’m doing? Take my hand and get on before I change my mind.

JACK

Why? I thought you hated me.

CAL

I still do. My original plan was to kill you. I just, I don’t think I can do it. I wanted to take away everything you cared about, and I thought that was Rose… but it appears not. You don’t even care enough to defend yourself now. Your death on my hands wouldn’t mean anything, it’d just land me in the hoosegow. Killing Rose was easy, but you.. Nevermind that. Just get on the boat.

JACK takes CAL’s hand and gets on the boat. CAL gives JACK his coat, after taking JACK’s freezing one off of him, and starts to row away. They meet up with the other boats who are waiting for rescue. The Carpathia soon arrives and everyone is boarding it. Before CAL and JACK board it, JACK sits up and whispers to CAL.

JACK

Thank you.

Cut to five years later.

CAL and JACK are in a fancy room with expensive furnishings. CAL sits at a desk, reading from a book and looking over what appear to be finance charts. JACK sits on a chaise lounge about ten feet away and is drawing something on a drawing pad. CAL looks over to JACK.

CAL

Exasperatedly

What in tarnation is so important that you had to barge into my office while I am accounting?

Lightheartedly

Why on earth do I associate myself with a goldbrick like you?

JACK walks over to CAL and sits on the edge of his desk. JACK has a smug look about him. CAL looks unamused. JACK then shows CAL the sketchbook.

CAL

Pleasantly surprised

Well… a portrait of myself is exactly what I needed to see. I- thank you.

JACK

It’s no problem.

JACK walks around the desk and up to CAL, pats him on the shoulder once before exiting the room.

The camera then zooms into a sheet of paper on the desk that has the writing “Heart of the Ocean Diamond Sale Profits”.
