Chapter 1: Interrogations

Chapter Text

Monday,8:00, first period

“Deku is missing” , Ochako whispers under her breath as she walks in the classroom and the greenette’s desk is empty. Midoriya is never late; he's usually freakishly early, already mumbling over one of his journals.

Ochako hurried to her seat as the bell rang. Out of the corner of her eye she sees Tsuyu glance at the door then lean over “Have you seen Midoriya?” she said in a hushed tone laced with concern, Ochako shakes her head as Aizawa-Sensei enters the classroom, “Not since Saturday, have you?” She lowers her voice to match Tsuyu’s but Aizawa-Sensei seems to have an enhanced hearing quirk today and sends a glare in her direction.

“Get out your books, all of you are doing independent work today, turn to page…..”

Ochako's mind wanders as the classroom fills with the sound of her peers following  Aizawa-Sensei’s instructions. Her thoughts once again drift to the whereabouts of Deku.

It’s then that a knock on the interrupts class 1-A’s independent work. Ochako then realizes that Aizawa-Sensei was probably expecting it, he hadn't even bothered to take out his sleeping bag.

The man at the door is obviously a police officer. His eyes land on Midoriya's empty desk and he immediately beckons Aizawa-Sensei over. The teacher sends one last glare towards his chaotic class that definitely said ‘ don’t destroy anything while i’m gone for less than a minute’. Ochako watches them leave and before the door can completely click shut Kaminari speaks up.

“What was that all about?” he asks no one in particular, It’s who speaks Ashido up though “I dunno Kami, you  think it has to do with Mido?” Kaminari shrugs and Iida takes his chance. “Please be silent! Aizawa-Sensei gave us specific instructions not to talk! We are supposed to be working.” Iida’s hand chops through the air and Tsuyu snorts “Iida-kun you’re the only one being loud, ribbit ” Ochako’s lips quirk up when Iida’s face flushes “Yes, you are correct I apologize!” To add to effect Ochako shushes the poor boy. Iida quickly sits down after whisper-yelling an apology ‘eh close enough’ Ochako thinks.

The door opens again and all conversations cease. Aizawa-sensei steps back into the classroom and holds the door open “Uraraka, Iida and Todoroki. Come with me.”

In Ochako's opinion it should be illegal to be sent to the principal's office. It feels even worse to sit outside of his office and watch other students walk past the front and throw curious glances at them through the window. There are two police officers in the room. The both of them look at the three hero students as if they had done something particularly scornful, it only serves to confuse Ochako even more on why the hell the three of them are sitting in the front office.

Ochako shifts and police officers burn metaphorical holes into her forehead. She chanced an uncomfortable glance at Iida and Todoroki who sat on each side of Ochako, she could tell they were just as restless as she was. The two police officers continue to try and intimidate them, but ultimately fail as Aizawa-sensei and All might-sensei's presence lessened to effect.

Though it is strange to see All might-Sensei looking unkempt, Ochako figures it’s been a stressful morning for everyone so far. She’s startled out of her thoughts when the principal Nedzu’s door hits the wall. She sees Iida wince and open mouth to say something, the glint in his eyes tells her it’s a lecture about respecting property, Todoroki must see the same thing because he shakes his head and Iida stops himself. It’s just another officer “Hey, you three, get in here we just need to ask you a few questions.” Ochako swallows but stands and the police officer holds the door for her.

Todoroki stops before the threshold, there’s a defiant look in his eyes, Ochako knows that look and she winces when before he starts talking.

“Do I need a lawyer?”

Aizawa-Sensei let out a suspicious sounding cough and All-might-Sensei tries and fails to discreetly elbow him.  The officer snorts but answers “Of course not, we just want to know where you three were on saturday.”

Todoroki huffs but steps in the rest of the way.

There is a detective in Principal Nedzu’s office and Shouto swears he’s seen him before. He introduces himself as Detective Tsukauchi Naomasa

“One of your peers was reported missing yesterday morning. From what we’ve gathered so far it was between eleven at night to midnight. But if seems you three were the last ones with him. I need you to answer a few of my questions”  Shouto immediately feels panic bubble up in his chest.

Shouto’s almost positive they could be accused of kidnapping if they answer Detective Tsuchachi’s questions wrong Who’s missing? He was with Midoriya all saturday nigh…… Oh, Midoriya. Of course it's Midoriya.

“It’s Midoriya.” Shouto says over Uraraka and Iida’s rising questions. The both of them stop short.

“Mido is missing?” Uraraka’s voice trembles “What questions do we need to answer?” she says puffing other cheeks. “Just a few,'' the detective says “The student's mother said he came home friday night to spend the weekend with her, the same as you three did with your families. But on saturday she had to run into work last minute, so she gave him permission to spend time with his friends as long as he was back by ten, eleven at the least. Can you tell me what went on during Saturday when you met up with Midoriya?”

Saturday had been better than usual. Father hadn’t been home since Friday and Fuyumi  had to run to the school she worked atl on saturday because of some emergency, so for half of the weekend Shouto had the house to himself.

“Well, we had already planned to hang out on saturday,” Uraraka starts, “We had also invited Tsuyu but she said she needed to babysit.” Detective Tsukauchi starts writing and nods a “True.” to the officer across from him. “Erm...we met at this park that Deku and I live kinda close to. Him and I both rode our bikes there, my house is further from the so I have to pass Deku’s street to get there. It’s the short way.” Uraraka warily watches as he writes down whatever he needs and says “True.” Uraraka looks hesitant to continue so Shouto picks up where she left off.

“Iida and I took the train,” he mumbles “then we walked the rest of the way. Midoriya and Uraraka were already there when we arrived.”

The detective nodded  “While you four were at the park did  anything seem off about Midoriya? Was there anyone, or anything, out of place?”

Shouto frowned at the implications of Midoriya running away. The detective caught his frown and sent a reassuring smile “Sorry, it’s just standard procedure”

The heterochromatic boy nodded and answered,  “No, there wasn’t really anything. I mean, Midoriya was a little down about his mom going to work but he seemed fine the whole time we were studying at the park.”

“True.” Detective Tsukauchi said

“We didn’t do much else, other than study” Iida interrupted, “Todoroki-kun and I left before Deku and Uraraka. After we both took the train we went our separate ways.”

The detective nodded. “Uraraka, I believe you said you and Midoriya rode your bikes to the park, what happened on your way back?”  Uraraka nodded “Midoriya was fine the whole way ba-Oh! there was one thing.” She perked up and the detective nodded “What was it?”

“Midoriya had this little radio taped to the front of his bike,” She said a little out of breath from her sudden epiphany, “He was a little embarrassed about it, so I asked him to turn it on. It played some old song or whatever but the station was clear. What was even weirder was when it went all statiky all of a sudden and it wasn’t just the one station it was all of them. We both just brushed it off as the radio being super old but it didn’t stop so Midoriya just turned it off.”

The detective nodded “Thank you Uraraka, it made not seem like it but this helped”

Shouto frowned as Uraraka nodded. Midoriya lived across from a small park, he guessed it was a park. MIdoriya had told him it was the city’s last attempt to have a natural preserve with a bunch of trees.

“There was one more thing detective,” Shouto said, “You may already know this but to get to his house Midoriya has to pass this forest preserve, at least that what I think it is.” He mumbled the last part. Uraraka looked at him with an amused raised eyebrow and Shouto felt his face heat up.

Detective Tsukachi nods again “Thank you, all three of you, for your help. You can all go back to class now.” He says and sends the students a reassuring smile, Shouto doesn’t blame him. Three UA students closely tied to a potential kidnapping.  and an officer stands and holds the door open for them.

The walk back to the classroom is silent, and a little awkward, but Tenya ignores that part. It’s strange without Midoriya’s chatter, and it seems he isn’t the only one who thinks so.

“You think he’s okay?” Uraraka asks softly “Who?” Tenya shoots back, “Midoriya. Do you think he’s okay?”

Tenya hopes he is. “I’m sure he’s okay, Midoriya will be found and...and he’ll be okay,”

His voice wavers and he knows that neither of his friends believe him, they don’t believe Midoriya is okay or will be okay. And that’s the worst part Tenya doesn’t believe himself either. He doesn’t think Midoriya is okay but he wishes he did, he wishes he could do something about it.

They’re almost to the classroom when Todoroki speaks up. “I don’t believe you,” he murmured and it only serves to make Tenya feel worse, “But I think if any of us went missing, Midoriya would look for us. Even if it seemed the police and heroes seemed to have it under control, he would say we would see things they wouldn’t because we know each other better, we would understand.” Uraraka nods “I agree with Todoroki, Iida-kun. We should do something, Midoriya is missing and it seemed to me the officers barely had anything.”

And Tenya sighs and feels like talking about the at least one hundred rules, and laws, they would probably end up breaking but he doesn’t. “Okay,” he mumbled and wonders when he became some sort of weird leader.

“But we can’t do it ourselves” And they can’t, he doesn’t want to drag anyone else into this but he will for Midoriya.
