Work Text:
“ Hawks, Hawks please come down.” Endeavor said calmly, looking up at Hawks, as anxiety began to bubble up into his chest, slowly but surely as he looked up at the man.
“ No! What's the point!? What’s the fucking point, Enji ? They’re gone! I AM USELESS! I can’t do this! I’m a...I’m no longer a bird of prey. I am the prey now.” Hawks said, screaming as tears stung his bright vibrant yellow eyes.
“ Hawks, please, we can work this out. Don’t jump, Hawks. Please.” Endeavor’s voice strained as he pleaded, anxiety bubbling and settling in his chest uncomfortably.
Hawks looked down at Endeavor below. Endeavor’s flames are out and he can see the fear in his eyes clearly even though he’s trying not to be scared. He shakes his head and backs away from the view.
“Hawks? HAWKS!?” Endeavor yelled out, getting more scared by the moments passing by.
Endeavor knew Hawks had been struggling ever since his wings were stripped from him by Dabi. When what Hawks had done for the Commission had been leaked, all of his sins were laid bare for the public to rip apart. It took a toll on Hawks. He made the man move into his home as soon as he got out of the hospital as he was worried for him. Endeavor remembers the day he saw Hawks for the first time while he was wide awake. Hawks sitting in the wheelchair, his normally bright yellow piercing eyes dull and lifeless. It was an extremely sad sight. Seeing how the younger male had always been so bright like the shining sun, laughing and always flirty and cocky. Now reduced to a small frame sitting in a wheelchair, bearing a new burn scar on the side of his face that's still raw and tender looking. Wearing loose clothing as the bandages around his small frame peaked from under the collar of the shirt. Endeavor remembers having said his greetings to the young man and talking with him a bit before helping him up to stand and make his way over and get into his car. Watching over hawks for these past few months, he’s been trying to make him happy but once everything about the commission came out just a week ago, it messed everything up.
Endeavor watched as the normally cocky young man in front of him broke down sobbing watching the news when everything came out. The amount of noise that came from Hawk's phone during the aftermath from the other heroes cursing him out astounded Endeavor. Others told him how brave he was and that the commission had used him and that it's not his fault. Endeavor held him that day. Let the man sob into his chest, all the tears he held back from all the years of pain. Saw Hawks deteriorate and pick up drinking like no tomorrow.
Snapping back into reality Endeavor sees Hawks reappear, but this time, he jumps. Endeavor doesn’t even register the scream that comes from his mouth. He desperately tries to use his quirk to catch Hawks in time.
Hawks, after jumping, laughs softly, feeling the wind rush though his bird's nest of blonde hair. Hearing Endeavor scream made him shed a few tears as he just laughed. Hoping that Endeavor wouldn’t save him. He shouldn’t save him; he's now a part of the scum of society. All the years of training how to kill without mercy. Betraying his comrades, killing others in order to keep in touch with the league all for the hero commission. His childhood was all about honing his skills, learning how to manipulate people like a sculptor does to clay, doing anything to get the mission done, even if it meant getting your hands bloody. He wakes with nightmares each night, hearing the screams and cries of all those he’s killed in cold blood. The only reason why he’s still as grounded mentally and not gone insane is how Endeavor would wake up hearing his cries. He’d pick Hawks up and get into the bed with him and cuddle him until he could sleep. It was a nice gesture and helped him get a few nights' rest.
Endeavor couldn’t help but let a few tears fall as he desperately tried to catch Hawks. He catches him, crashing through a window, making sure to try not to hurt Hawks in the process. Endeavor sits on his knees holding Hawks to his chest. His breathing was heavy, wracking his whole body, as those moments that felt like years were over. He laughs a few chuckles unable to help the tears that begin to fall and he moves and looks down at Hawks who is staring up at him with his bright, piercing eyes.
Hawks sees the tears falling from Endeavor's eyes which causes him to crack.
“I-I’m so sorry, Endeavor, I’m sorry” Hawks says as tears begin to spill down his face. He places his face against Endeavor's chest and just sobs as they both stay there collecting themselves.
A few weeks went by and the news had recorded it all, Hawks finally stealing the remote to watch the TV as Endeavor told him not to. Seeing all the shit they say about Endeavor for protecting him and helping him makes his heart throb. He knows Endeavor loves him. He loves Endeavor as well, but he just knows he can’t stay. He doesn't want to tarnish Endeavor’s reputation even more than he already has.
He tries to act like everything is okay to calm Endeavor’s nerves, seeing how the man comes back home everyday calling out Hawks’ name until he responds or until he can find him. Endeavor always looks so panicked until he finds out Hawks is okay. Only then does the tension in the man's shoulders go away. Little did Endeavor know that him saving Hawks was going to happen again.
Every few months Hawks tries to attempt again and again. Endeavor tried to get Hawks a therapist, doing everything in his power to help him cope instead of Hawks trying to take his own life, whether it be overdosing, hanging, or jumping off the top of a tall enough building. Endeavor tried to make the younger male feel loved. To take him out to eat, to give him kisses and cuddles, desperate for Hawks not to leave him alone in this world.
One day Endeavor is on patrol and gets called for a man about to jump off a building. Endeavor always thought these situations were stressful. He made it to the scene only to see Hawks. Feeling his heart rate pick up he tries to open his mouth to talk. Hawks’ bright yellow eyes lock with Endeavors ocean blue ones for a second. Within a few seconds he lets go of the railing, dropping off the building. Endeavor runs after, jumping, trying to grab Hawks before it's too late but Aizawa had grabbed him, pulling him back.
“Let him go Endeavor.” Aizawa said coldly, walking away. Endeavor snarls at him and moves, jumping off to follow after.
As Hawks plummeted he looked up at the scene above and smiled softly. As he plummets to his demise, he sings:
“Achilles
Achilles,
Achilles come down, won't you
Get up off
Get up off the roof?" Seeing a spark of light and Endeavor coming after.
But that time, Endeavor was too late as Hawks hit the concrete and let out a pained gasp.
“HAWKS!” Endeavor yells and lands on his feet next to Hawks and goes over to him.
“Hawks please hang in there! Please !” Endeavor pleaded as he got his phone calling the ambulance afraid to move Hawks’s broken body.
Endeavor talked to Hawks while on the phone begging him to keep his eyes open, watching as Hawks coughs up blood, staring up into Endeavor's blue eyes. He lets out a small smile before seeing his vision blur. Endeavor’s breathing picks up and he gently nudges Hawks.
“Hawks, Hawks open your eyes, please. Open your eyes.” Endeavor’s voice is cracking and tears have begun to fall. He was too late. He’s never been as fast as All Might and this is what he has to pay for not being fast enough, losing his love. It's what he deserved. He deserved to be alone in this world.
